In this modern age which electric energy is the fundamental source of energy in the industry, electric shock disasters are unavoidable. Although numerous efforts, time, and money have been invested to prevent such electric shock disasters, the number of electric shock disasters are on the increase. In this study, models for equivalent electric circuit are developed for the different types of electric shock which are classified into three groups. The objective of these models is to calculate the electric current flowing through the body at the time of the shock. Based on the analysis, countermeasures to prevent the shock are suggested. The data used in this study are based on 28 actual incidents which occurred in the Daegu area during January of 1995 through June of 1999. The results of this study can be used as a technical manual for workers treating electrical facilities.
Whitehead's philosophy is evaluated as an applicable philosophy and an accurate, logical explanation system about the world through mathematics. Whitehead's ideological development can be divided into mathematical research, critical consciousness about sciences and philosophical exploration. Although it is presented as a whole unified conceptual framework to understand nature and human beings which is based on modern mathematics and physics in the 20th century, Whitehead's philosophy has not been sufficiently understood and evaluated about the full meaning and mathematics educational values. In this paper, we study relations of Whitehead's philosophy and the mathematical education. Moreover, we study implicity of mathematical education.
This study is based on "Hoesamgyeong(會三經)", the interpretation of the Lecture on Truth of "Samilshingo(三一神誥:Korea's national scripture)". And the goal of this study is to arrange theoretical system of Korean traditional qigong training by doing research on the principles of qigong that are contained in Yookdaesungsang(六大成象) on the basis of Traditional Korean Medicine. Yookdaesungsang(六大成象) is the ideas that appeared for the first time in "Hoesamgyeong(會三經)". Yookdaesungsang(六大成象) refers to Kong(空), Yol(熱), Jin(震), Seup(濕), Han(寒) and Ko(固), which mean six elements of nature. And they correspond with Sung(性), Myoung(命), Jung(精), Sim(心), Ki(氣) and Shin(身) respectively, which are fundamental components of human beings according to the Lecture on Truth of "Samilshingo(三一神誥)". This has a thread of connection with the ideas of 'the unity of nature and human beings(天人合一)' or 'the correspondence between nature and human beings(天人相應)' in Traditional Korean Medicine. From the standpoint of modern science, what are more tangible such as Seup(濕), Han(寒), and Ko(固) are considered as changes in states of matter by activities, while what are relatively intangible such as Kong(空), Yol(熱), and Jin(震) are regarded as wave energy. And in the ideas of three yin(三陰) and three yang(三陽), on which the meridian system of Traditional Korean Medicine is based, Taeyang(太陽)-Soeum(少陰), Yangmyung(陽明)-Taeeum(太陰), and Soyang(少陽)-Gweoleum(厥陰) are respectively ins and outs of the human body and they keep the balance between yin and yang such as cold(寒)-hot(熱), dry(燥)-wet(濕), and slow(緩)-fast(急). As these cold(寒)-hot(熱), dry(燥)-wet(濕), and slow(緩)-fast(急) correspond with Han(寒)-Yol(熱), Jin(震)-Seup(濕), and Kong(空)-Ko(固), the correlation between Yookdaesungsang(六大成象) and the meridian system can be ascertained. As mentioned above, the principles of Qigong in "Hoesamgyeong(會三經)" are based on traditional ideas and accord closely with the principles of Traditional Korean Medicine. Therefore, further researches on the correlations between principles of Qigong unique to Korean tradition and Traditional Korean Medicine are required.

Since the 1990s, the handmade shoes industrial agglomeration district has formed in the city center, Hyangchon-dong, Jung-gu in Daegu. This paper aims to examine the formation process, to analyze the viability, and to propose policy implications of manufacturing industrial districts in a city center through studying this industrial district. The district's creation began as the result of the dissolution of local production and marketing system of handmade shoes in the 1980s, the excellent accessibility of the location and an inexpensive rent. The district's core viability lies in the external economies derived from local networks through social divisions of labor of production and marketing systems. Because of the lack of organizers of the social division of labor and 'integrated production system done by single business', the effect of external economies created by the social division of labor is limited. To get over this limitation, the district should to be restructured into a 'cultural street of leather crafts' as a part of 'making modern historical and cultural belt' programs within Daegu downtown regeneration policies. To support the restructuring, public assistant measures such as the establishment of a corporate services center should be strengthened.
Objective : Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a geriatric dementia that is widespread in old age. With an aging populace, AD is a looming problem in public health service. Alzheimer's disease is characterized by specific neuronal degeneration in certain areas of the brain. Mutations and abnormal expression of several genes are associated with ${\beta}-amyloid$ deposits and Alzheimer's disease; among them APP, PS1, and PS2, SOD, free radical, ROS. Methods:We studied herbal medicines that have a relationship to brain degeneration. From pre-modern times, although a variety of oriental prescriptions of Aster tataricus have been traditionally utilized for the treatment of AD, their pharmacological effects and action mechanisms have not yet been fully elucidated. Result : Based on morphological observations by phase-contrast microscope, TUNEL assay and MTT in the culture media, $H_20_2-induced$ cell death was significantly inhibited by Aticus. We examined by ROS formation, catalase activity and GSH activity. We studied the protective effect and inhibitory effects of neurotoxicity in $H_20_2-induced$ PC-12 cells by Aticus. Findings from our experiments show that Aticus inhibits apoptosis, which has neurotoxicities and cell damage in PC-12 cells. In addition, treatment with Aticus ($>25{\mu}g/ml$ for 6hrs) partially prevented $H_20_2-induced$ cytotoxicity in PC-12 cells, and induced a protective effect. Conclusion : As the result of this study, in the Aticus group, the apoptosis in the nervous system was inhibited, protected against the degeneration of PC-12 cells by $H_20_2$. Taken together, Aticus exhibited inhibition of $H_20_2-induced$ apoptotic cell death. Aticus was found to induce protective effect on GSH and catalase in PC-12 cells. Based on these findings, Aticus may be beneficial for the treatment of AD.
Kenzo Tange was interested in how to express tradition in the process of creation of modern architecture and tried to express the traditionaluty of Japanese architecture in his own way. In particular, Tange expressed Japanese tradition in terms of building materials and components from the point of view of his own 'New Tradition'. Tange created the 'Japanese style of architecture' based on traditional architecture to match the discourse of international architecture and distinguish it from the Western one, by harmonizing the plasticity of Japanese traditional architecture with the Western technology in building materials and components. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the signs and traces of traditions in the building materials and components in his architecture. Through this study, I would like to have implications for our architecture, which had a very different process and result from Japan in digesting and combining it with traditional architecture although Western civilization was accepted at about the same time.
We investigate solar and lunar motions in the Seonmyeong (SM) calendar that was compiled by Xu, Ang of the Tang dynasty (A.D. 618-907) in China and used for 71 years from 822 to 892. This calendar was also used in Korea during the Goryeo dynasty (A.D. 918-1392) and in Japan for 823 years from 862 to 1684, the longest time among the three countries. Referring to historical documents of China, Korea, and Japan, we analyze the calendrical methods of calculating the daily apparent movements of the Sun and Moon in the SM calendar, which were considered their unequal motions, and compare the movements with the results of modern calculations for three periods in the Goryeo dynasty: 919, 1155, and 1392 years (i.e., the beginning, middle, and ending of the dynasty, respectively). We find that a quadratic equation was employed to obtain the daily movement of the Sun using physical quantities on the instant of each solar term, which was tabulated in its calendar book such as the Goryeosa (History of the Goryeo Dynasty). For quantitative analysis, we compute the mean absolute difference (MAD) of the daily apparent movement between the SM calendar and modern calculations and obtain 0.33, 0.30, and 0.31 arcmin for the periods of 919, 1155, and 1392 years, respectively. Meanwhile, we find relatively large MAD values in the daily movement of the Moon: 0.217, 0.284, and 0.240 degrees for each corresponding year. An interesting point is that the MAD value in the lunar motion shows the maximum in 1155 years, and is the minimum in the solar motion. In conclusion, we believe that this study will facilitate in the understanding of the SM calendar further, particularly in the calendrical methods of calculating sunrise, sunset, and eclipse times.
We investigate the astronomical phenomenon records of Sukjong's Chunbang-Ilgi made by Sigangwon (Royal Educational Office of the Crown Prince) at which King Sukjong was the crown prince (i.e., 1667 January 24-1674 September 22). From the daily records of 2,799 days, we extract the astronomical records of 1,443 days and classify them into 14 categories. Then, we group the records of each category into five phenomena (Atmosphere, Eclipse, Daylight Appearance, Apparition, and Appulse) and compare them with the results of modern astronomical computations wherever possible. Except for Atmosphere group comprising records of meteorological events, such as solar halo, lunar halo, and unusual clouds, the significant findings in every other group are as follows: In Eclipse group, the solar eclipse that occurred on 1673 August 12 was unobservable in Korea, which is in contrast to the record of Joseonwangjo-Sillok (Annals of the Joseon Dynasty), which states that the sun was in eclipse around sunset time, as observed at Nam mountain. From the lunar eclipse records, we verify that the Joseon court did not change the date of the events observed after midnight. In Daylight Appearance group, we confirm that this phenomenon was observed during the daytime and not during twilight. We further suggest that if observation conditions are met, a celestial body brighter than -2.3 mag could be seen during the daytime with the naked-eye. In Apparition group, we find the possibilities that the Orionid meteor shower had influence on the meteor records and the seasonality on the aurora records. We also find that the Korean records in which the coma of comet C/1668 E1 was located below the horizon were overlooked in previous studies. Finally, we find that the records of Appulse group generally agree with the results of modern calculations. The records of Beom (trespass in literal) and Sik (eating in literal) events show average angular separations of 1.2° and 1.0°, respectively. In conclusion, we believe this work helps study the astronomical records of other logs of Sigangwon, such as Sukjong's Chunbang-Ilgi.
Background : Qigong is an energy-healing intervention used to prevent and cure ailments and to improve health through regular practice. Although qigong-neither itself nor its postulated mechanism of action-are within the paradigm of modern Western medical science, its effects on the human body could be possible. Objectives : This study aims to review the bibliography, biological responses and therapeutic effects of Qigong. In the process, this review will grasp trends in this field of studies and will direct further researches into the right direction. Method : The computerized Korean databases were searched from their respective inceptions up to January 2008. The search terms used were 'qi', 'qigong', 'doin', 'training', 'bioenergy', 'life nurturing' and random or Korean language terms related to qigong. Several specialized journals were also manually searched for relevant articles. Result : Since the 1990s, Qigong papers in the Korean Literature are increased. The articles on Korean traditional medicine had been published more than those on physical education or nursing etc. However, since the majority of the trials determine questionnaire, it was difficult to determine the efficacy of a specific intervention. The methodological quality of the trials was generally low (Jadad score: mean, 1.3; range, 1 to 4), questioning their reliability. Conclusions : More profound studies for Qigong are needed. Further rigorous clinical trials with more objective outcome measures that include sham procedures should be performed. Specifically, we think it should be clinical studies and qualitative research methods for evaluation are needed.
Objectives : There is a correlation between student's satisfaction of education and their occupation satisfaction. Therefore, Korean medical school students' satisfaction toward their education is important for their medical ability in Traditional Korean Medicine(TKM). The purpose of this study is to investigate TKM school students' satisfaction of education and their perceptions of TKM level. Methods : The questionnaire used in this study is consisted of questions about students' satisfaction and their perception toward issues about TKM. 168 cases were collected, and I analyzed 164 cases. Results : 43.9% of students think that the ratio of western medical courses to TKM courses in TKM school's curriculum is 'Proper'. 54.3% of students do not satisfy their curriculum. But, 51.2% of students would recommend high school students for entrance to TKM school. 77.9% of students think 'TKM doctor should use modern medical device'. 92.7% and 61.9% of students think 'Needed' toward 'Cooperation of western medicine and Korean medicine', and 'Medical unification' each. There are correlations ; (1)'recognition toward ratio of curriculum', (2)'satisfaction of curriculum', (3)'degree of recommendation to enter the TKM School', (4)'relation between TKM and Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) or Complementary and Alternative Medicine(CAM)'. Conclusions : Student's satisfaction of education is not quite high than satisfaction of TKM study itself. Most of respondents agreed usage of medical devices. The more they thought that they had curriculum for western medicine, the lesser they thought that medical unification was ont needed. Further studies are needed to assess satisfactions of students for their education with more accuracy results.
