This paper describes the manufacturing process of tilting pad gas bearing with a diameter of 5 mm and a length of 0.5-1 mm for power MEMS (Micro Electomechanical Systems) applications. The bearing compacts with nanopowder feedstock were prepared by Ni-metal mold with 2-mold system using LIGA process. The effect of the manufacturing conditions on sintering properties of nanopowder gas bearing was investigated. In this work, Fe-45 wt%Ni nanopowder with an average diameter of 30-50 nm size was used as starting material. After mixing the nanopowder and the wax-based binders, the amount of powder was controlled to obtain the certain mixing ratio. The nanopowder bearing compacts were sintered with 1-2 hr holding time under hydrogen atmospheres and under temperatures of $600^{\circ}C$ to $1,000^{\circ}C$. Finally, the critical batch of mixed powder system was found to be 70% particle fraction in total volume. The maximum density of the sintered bearing specimen was about 94% of theoretical density.

We have demonstrated a fluidic technique for self-assembly of microfabricated parts onto substrate using patterned shapes of magnetic force self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). The metal particles and the array were fabricated using the micromachining technique. The metal particles were in a multilayer structure (Au, Ti, and Ni). Sidewalls of patterned Ni dots on the array were covered by thick negative photoresist (SU-8), and the array was magnetized. The array and the particles were mixed in buffer solution, and were arranged by magnetic force interaction. Binding direction of the metal particle onto Ni dots was controlled by multilayer structure and direction of magnetization. A quarter of total Ni dots were covered by the particles. The binding direction of the particles was controllable, and condition of particles was almost even with the Au surface on top. The particles were successfully arranged on the array.
In the radiation protection application, the metal-polymer composites have been developed for their radiation shielding properties. In this research, the elastomer composites doped by 10 ㎛ and 100nm size of lead, bismuth and tungsten particles as filler with 30 and 60 wt percentages were prepared. To survey the shielding properties of the polymer composites using gamma-ray emitted from 152Eu and 137Cs sources, the gamma flux was measured by using NaI(Tl) detector, then the linear attenuation coefficient was calculated. Also, the Monte Carlo simulation (MCs) method was used. The results showed a direct relationship between the linear attenuation coefficients of the absorbent and filler ratio. Also, the decrease in the particle size of the shielding material in each weight percentage improved the radiation shielding features. When the dimension of the particles was in the order of nano-size, more attenuation was achieved. At low energies used for medical diagnostic X-ray applications due to the predominance of the photoelectric effect, bismuth and lead were suitable selection as filler.

Transdermal and topical drug delivery with minimal tissue damage has been an area of vigorous research for a number of years. Our research team has initiated the development of an effective method for delivering drug particles across the skin (transdermal) for systemic circulation, and to localized (topical) areas. The device consists of a micro particle acceleration system based on laser ablation that can be integrated with endoscopic surgical techniques. A layer of micro particles is deposited on the surface of a thin metal foil. The rear side of the foil is irradiated with a laser beam, which generates a shockwave that travels through the foil. When the shockwave reaches the end of the foil, it is reflected as an expansion wave and causes instantaneous deformation of the foil in the opposite direction. Due to this sudden deformation, the microparticles are ejected from the foil at very high speeds, and therefore have sufficient momentum to penetrate soft body tissues. We have demonstrated this by successfully delivering cobalt particles $3\;{\mu}m$ in diameter into gelatin models that represent soft tissue with remarkable penetration depth.
Low temperature micro-calorimeters have been employed in the field of high resolution alpha spectrometers. These alpha detectors typically consist of a superconducting or metal absorber and a temperature sensor. The temperature sensor can be a transition edge sensor (TES), a metallic magnetic calorimeter (MMC) or other low temperature detectors for an accurate measurement of temperature change due to an alpha particle absorption. We report a recent study of the heat flow between a replaceable absorber and a temperature sensor. A piece of gold foil in $2.4{\times}2.7{\times}0.03\;mm^3$ is used as an absorber. A $40\;{\mu}m$ diameter Au:Er paramagnetic sensor is attached to another small piece of gold foil in $400{\times}200{\times}30\;{\mu}m^3$ to serve as the temperature sensor. This sensor assembly, Au:Er and gold foil, is placed on a miniature SQUID susceptometer in a gradiometric configuration. The thermal connection between the absorber and the sensor was made with three gold bonding wires. The measured thermal conductance shows a linear dependence to the temperature. The values are in a good agreement with Wiedemann-Franz type thermal conductance of the gold wires.
Fe/$SiO_2$ core-shell type composite nanoparticles have been synthesized using a reverse micelle process combined with metal alkoxide hydrolysis and condensation. Nano-sized $SiO_2$ composite particles with a core-shell structure were prepared by arrested precipitation of Fe clusters in reverse micelles, followed by hydrolysis and condensation of organometallic precursors in micro-emulsion matrices. Microstructural and chemical analyses of Fe/$SiO_2$ core-shell type composite nanoparticles were carried out by TEM and EDS. The size of the particles and the thickness of the coating could be controlled by manipulating the relative rates of the hydrolysis and condensation reaction of TEOS within the micro-emulsion. The water/surfactant molar ratio influenced the Fe particle distribution of the core-shell composite particles, and the distribution of Fe particles was broadened as R increased. The particle size of Fe increased linearly with increasing $FeNO_3$ solution concentration. The average size of the cluster was found to depend on the micelle size, the nature of the solvent, and the concentration of the reagent. The average size of synthesized Fe/$SiO_2$ core-shell type composite nanoparticles was in a range of 10-30 nm and Fe particles were 1.5-7 nm in size. The effects of synthesis parameters, such as the molar ratio of water to TEOS and the molar ratio of water to surfactant, are discussed.
In this study, for the tube-to-tube friction welding of hose nipple materials, the main parameters of friction welding were investigated using tensile tests, Vickers hardness surveys of the bond area (HAZ), and observations of the microstructure to increase the quality of friction welding based on visual examination. As-welded and post weld heat treated (PWHT) specimens were tested. The optimal welding conditions were found to be n = 1000 rpm, HP = 10 MPa, UP = 15 MPa, HT = 9 s, and UT = 5 s when the metal loss (Mo) was 7.5 mm. Furthermore, the peak of the hardness distribution of the friction welded joints could be eliminated by PWHT. Moreover, the two materials of the friction weld were thoroughly mixed with a well-combined structure of micro-particles, without any molten material, particle growth, or defects.

Both Cu and Cu-oxide nanopowders have great potential as conductive paste, solid lubricant, effective catalysts and super conducting materials because of their unique properties compared with those of commercial micro-sized ones. In this study, Cu and Cu-oxide nanopowders were prepared by Pulsed Wire Evaporation (PWE) method which has been very useful for producing nanometer-sized metal, alloy and ceramic powders. In this process, the metal wire is explosively converted into ultrafine particles under high electric pulse current (between $10^4$ and $10^{ 6}$$A/mm^2$) within a micro second time. To prevent full oxidations of Cu powder, the surface of powder has been slightly passivated with thin CuO layer. X-ray diffraction analysis has shown that pure Cu nanopowders were obtained at $N_2$ atmosphere. As the oxygen partial pressure increased in $N_2$ atmosphere, the gradual phase transformation occurred from Cu to $Cu_2$O and finally CuO nanopowders. The spherical Cu nanopowders had a uniform size distribution of about 100nm in diameter. The Cu-oxide nanopowders were less than 70nm with sphere-like shape and their mean particle size was 54nm. Smaller size of Cu-oxide nanopowders compared with that of the Cu nanopowders results from the secondary explosion of Cu nanopowders at oxygen atmosphere. Thin passivated oxygen layer on the Cu surface has been proved by XPS and HRPD.
Squeeze casting was used for fabricating a light metal base composite having high strength and wearresistance. Reactive sintering was used to prepare the preform of Squeeze casting. To utilize Fe-Al intermetallic compounds and SiC particle as a reinforcement, there needs to prepare Fe-Al mixed powder at 50, 60, 70at.%Al, and add SiC powder to the above mixture at 4, 7, 16, 24wt.%. The prepared mixture with SiC was reactive sintered in a tube furnace at $660^{\circ}C$ to get a porous hybrid preform of intermetallic compound and SiC. The preform prepared above was placed in a metal mold, preheated at $660^{\circ}C$ AC4C matrix was injected into the mold with the temperature of the melt at $610^{\circ}C$ After these processes, 66MPa was applied to the mold for 5 minute to finish the whole procedure. The maximum reaction temperature was increased with the increased Al amount, but decreased with the increased SiC amount. The density of the preform was decreased with SiC amount increase in the compacts due to swelling of the preform. An optical microscope was applied to observe the micro structure and the dispersion of the reinforcements. To analyze phases, We utilized XRD, EDS. Hardness test were chosen to get the information of mechanical properties. There were no significant changes in micro structure between the composite and preform. However, it was shown that uniform dispersion of the reinforcers and complete infiltration of the melt into the preform were achieved through the procedure of the squeeze casting. It was observed that the hardness of the composite is decreased with increased SiC amount, resulting from the volumetric expansion of the preform.

The main objective of the present study is to investigate the roles of the micro-dimpled surface on the drag reduction. To investigate the effectiveness of the micro-dimpled surface, the flat plates are prepared. The micro-size dimples are directly carved on the metal surface by ultrasonic nano-crystal surface modification (UNSM) method. Momentum of the main flow is increased by the dimple patterns within the turbulent boundary layer (TBL), however, there is no significant change in the turbulence intensity in the TBL. The influence of dimple patterns is examined through the flow field survey near the flat plate trailing edge in terms of the profile drag. The wake flow velocities in the flat plate are measured by PIV technique. The maximum drag reduction rate is 4.6% at the Reynolds number of $10^6{\sim}10^7$. The dimples tend to increase the drag reduction rate consistently even at high Reynolds number range.
