  • The role of nano bio-composites precursor to chitosan are innumerable and are known for having different applications in various branches of physical sciences. The application to the sensor development is relatively new, where only few literature works are available to address the specific and critical analysis of nanocomposites in the subject area. The bio-composites are potential and having greater affinity towards the heavy metals and several micro-pollutants hence, perhaps are having wider implications in the low or even trace level detection of the pollutants. The nano-composites could show good selectivity and suitability for the detection of the pollutants as they are found in the complex matrix. However, the greater challenges are associated using the bio-composites, since the biomaterials are prone to be oxidized or reduced at an applied potential and found to be a hinderance for the detection of target pollutants. In addition, the materials could proceed with a series of electrochemical reactions, which could produce different by-products in analytical applications, resulting in several complex phenomena in electrochemical processes. Therefore, this review addresses critically various aspects of an evaluation of nano bio-composite materials in the electrochemical detection of heavy metals and micro-pollutants from aqueous solutions.

  • Nowadays, there are a great number of various structures that have been retrofitted by using different FRP Composites. Due to this, more researches need to be conducted to know more the characteristics of these structures, not only that but also a comparison among them before and after the retrofitting is needed. In this research, a model steel structure is tested using a bench-scale earthquake simulator on the shake table, using recorded micro tremor data, in order to get the dynamic behaviors. Columns of the model steel structure are then retrofitted by using GFRP composite, and then tested on the Quanser shake table by using the recorded micro tremor data. At this stage, it is needed to evaluate the dynamic behaviors of the retrofitted model steel structure. Various types of methods of OMA, such as EFDD, SSI, etc. are used to take action in the ambient responses. Having a purpose to learn more about the effects of GFRP composite, experimental model analysis of both types (retrofitted and no-retrofitted models) is conducted to evaluate their dynamic behaviors. There is a provision of ambient excitation to the shake table by using recorded micro tremor ambient vibration data on ground level. Furthermore, the Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition is used through output-only modal identification. At the end of this study, moderate correlation is obtained between mode shapes, periods and damping ratios. The aim of this research is to show and determine the effects of GFRP Composite implementation on structural responses of the model steel structure, in terms of changing its dynamical behaviors. The frequencies for model steel structure and the retrofitted model steel structure are shown to be 33.916% in average difference. Finally, it is shown that, in order to evaluate the period and rigidity of retrofitted structures, OMA might be used.

  • Effects of fiber-matrix interphases on the micro-and macro-mechanical behaviors of unidirectionally fiber-reinforced composites subjected to transverse shear loading at remote distance have been studied. The interphases between fibers and matrix have been modeled by the spring-layer which accounts for continuity of tractions, but allows radial and circumferential displacement jumps across the interphase that are linearly related to the normal and tangential tractions. Numerical calculations for basic cells of the composites have been carried out using the boundary element method. For an undamaged composite the micro-level stresses at the matrix side of the interphase and effective shear stiffness have been computed as functions of fiber volume ratio $V_f$ and interphase stiffness k. Results are presented for various interphase stiffnesses from the perfect bonding to the case of total debonding. For a square array composite the results show that for a high interphase stiffness k>10, an increase of $V_f$ increases the effective transverse shear modulus G over bar of the composite. For a relatively low interphase stiffness k<1, it is shwon that an increase of $V_f$ slightly decreases the effective transverse shear modulus. For the perfect bonding case, G over bar for a hexagonal array composite is slightly larger than that for a square array composite. Also for a damaged composite partially debonded at the interphase, local stress fields and effective shear modulus are calculated and a decrease in G over bar has been observed.

  • This paper presents the microscopic observation results from the picture frame test using five-harness satin weave fabric composite. Aligned and misaligned specimens are observed to verify the exact tow deformation pattern such as tow interval and change in tow amplitude. To observe the micro-deformation of the fabric structure, appropriate specimens from picture frame test are sectioned and observed under the microscope. From the observation results, it is found that a picture frame test with a misaligned fibre orientation angle shows large differences in deformation between tensile and compressive tow directions.

  • A novel multi-layer type micro gas sensor for $NO_X$ detection was designed and fabricated. Micro platform defined as type II-1 in this article for micro gas sensor was fabricated using the MEMS technology to meet the demanding needs of lower power consumption. Nano composite materials were fabricated with nanosized tin oxide powder and $\underline{m}$ulti-$\underline{w}$all $\underline{c}$arbon $\underline{n}$ano $\underline{t}$ube (MWCNT) to improve sensitivity. We investigated characteristics of fabricated multi-layer type micro gas sensor with $NO_2$ concentration variations at constant 2.2 V. Sensitivity (S) of micro gas sensor were observed to increase from 2.9, to 7.4 and 11.2 as concentrations of $NO_2$ gases increased from 2.4 ppm, to 3.6 ppm and 4.9 ppm. When 2.4 ppm of $NO_2$ gas was applied, response time and recovery time of micro gas sensor were recorded as 101 seconds and 142 seconds, respectively.

  • Piezoelectric Fiber Composites with Interdigitated Electrodes (PFCIDE) were previously introduced as an alternative to monolithic wafers with conventional electrodes for applications of structural actuation. This paper is an investigation into the performance improvement of piezoelectric fiber composite actuators by changing the matrix material. This paper presents a modified micro-electromechanical model and numerical analyses of piezoelectric fiber/piezopolymer matrix composite actuator with interdigitated electrodes (PFPMIDE). Various concepts from different backgrounds including three-dimensional linear elastic and dielectric theories have been incorporated into the present linear piezoelectric model. The rule of mixture and the modified method to calculate effective properties of fiber composites were extended to apply to the PFPMIDE model. The new model was validated when compared with available experimental data and other analytical results. To see the structural responses of a composite plate integrated with the PFPMIDE, three-dimensional finite element formulations were derived. Numerical analyses show that the shape of the graphite/epoxy composite plate with the PFPMIDE may be controlled by judicious choice of voltages, piezoelectric fiber angles, and elastic tailoring of the composite plate.

  • The effect of the content of microsilica and nanosilica continuously modified with hydroxy silane and epoxy-modified silicone in cycloaliphatic epoxy/microsilica/nanosilica composites (EMNCs) on the mechanical and water repellent properties was evaluated. Surface-modified micro- and nanosilica was well-mixed with a cycloaliphatic epoxy resin in the presence of polyester-modified polydimethylsiloxane (PEM-PDMS) as a dispersing agent using an ultrasonicator. Tensile and flexural tests were carried out using a universal testing machine (UTM). The water repellent property was evaluated by contact angle measurements of water on the composite surface. Tensile strength of the composite could be enhanced by 32.2% up to 91.4 MPa, and the flexural strength was raised to 122.0 MPa, which is 38.8% higher than that of neat epoxy. The contact angle of water on the composite was as high as $104.1^{\circ}$.
