  • Many studies have been performed to predict a reliable and accurate stress-range distribution and fatigue damage regarding the Gaussian wide-band stress response due to multi-peak waves and multiple dynamic loads. So far, most of the approximation models provide slightly inaccurate results in comparison with the rain-flow counting method as an exact solution. A step-by-step study was carried out to develop new approximate spectral moments that are close to the rain-flow counting moment, which can be used for the development of a fatigue damage model. Using the special parameters and bandwidth parameters, four kinds of parameter-based combinations were constructed and estimated using the R-squared values from regression analysis. Based on the results, four candidate empirical formulas were determined and compared with the rain-flow counting moment, probability density function, and root mean square (RMS) value for relative distance. The new approximate spectral moments were finally decided through comparison studies of eight response spectra. The new spectral moments presented in this study could play an important role in improving the accuracy of fatigue damage model development. The present study shows that the new approximate moment is a very important variable for the enhancement of Gaussian wide-band fatigue damage assessment.

  • In this paper, we propose estimators of Gini index of the exponential distribution. We also obtain the distribution and the moments of the proposed estimators. The moments of the proposed estimators are derived by special function. We compare the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of Gini index with the proposed estimator of Gini index in the sense of MSE through Monte Carlo Method.

  • The moment equations of the concentration distribution for the multi-region model are derived using the method of moment. The method originally devised by Aris is to obtain the concentration moments satisfying a given PDE (Partial Differential Equation. The method of moment is used to obtain the first five moments (0th to 4to) that satisfy the model PDE. Each moment of the concentration distribution for the model equation is plotted for the dimensionless time and gave similar results except the skewness and the kurtosis. The results of the analysis show the physical meaning of each moment. The comparisons with the number of regions or the global interaction coefficient give a possibility to determine the parameters of the multi-region model with the analytical concepts.

  • This paper is concerned with the analysis of the busy period distribution in a batch arrival $M^X/G/1$ retrial queue. The expression for the Laplace-Stieltjes transform of the length of the busy period is well known, but from this expression we cannot compute the moments of the length of the busy period by direct differentiation. This paper provides a direct method of calculation for the first and second moments of the length of the busy period.

  • In this paper a new generating procedure of a random chord is presented. This problem has its roots in the Bertrand's paradox. A study of the limit behaviour of its maximum length and the rate of convergence is conducted. In addition, moments of record values of random chord length are obtained for this case, as well as other cases of solutions of Bertrand's paradox.

  • In this paper we propose several estimators of Gini index of the two-parameter exponential distribution and obtain dis-tributions and moments of the proposed estimators. The proposed estimators are shown to cosistency and will be compares in terms of the proposed estimators. The proposed estimators are shown to cosistency and will be compared in terms of the mean squared error (MSE) through Monte Carlo method.

  • The development of data-based models requires uncertainty analysis to explain the accuracy of their predictions. In this paper, an uncertainty analysis of the support vector regression (SVR) model, which is a data-based model, was performed because previous research showed that the SVR method accurately estimates the collapse moments of wall-thinned pipe bends and elbows. The uncertainty analysis method used in this study was an analytic uncertainty analysis method, and estimates with a 95% confidence interval were obtained for 370 test data points. From the results, the prediction interval (PI) was very narrow, which means that the predicted values are quite accurate. Therefore, the proposed SVR method can be used effectively to assess and validate the integrity of the wall-thinned pipe bends and elbows.

  • A method for the dynamical analysis of FE discretized uncertain linear and nonlinear structures is presented. This method is based on the moment equation approach, for which the differential equations governing the response first and second-order statistical moments must be solved. It is shown that they require the cross-moments between the response and the random variables characterizing the structural uncertainties, whose governing equations determine an infinite hierarchy. As a consequence, a closure scheme must be applied even if the structure is linear. In this sense the proposed approach is approximated even for the linear system. For nonlinear systems the closure schemes are also necessary in order to treat the nonlinearities. The complete set of equations obtained by this procedure is shown to be linear if the structure is linear. The application of this procedure to some simple examples has shown its high level of accuracy, if compared with other classical approaches, such as the perturbation method, even for low levels of closures.

  • In this paper, redundancy resolution of UVMS (underwater vehicle-manipulate. system) is addressed. In general, UVMS has redundant DOFs (degrees of freedom) as many as DOFs of manipulator and these redundant DOFs can be used to optimize the configuration of UVMS while satisfying given tasks. We propose a performance index for redundancy resolution which minimizes the restoring moments of UVMS. The restoring moment can cause unintentional change of poses of UVMS. If the restoring moments remain small, control effort for keeping the poses of UVMS decreases. This means that energy consumption can be reduced by minimizing the restoring moments during conducting tasks. Proposed performance measure is optimized by gradient projection method. Generated trajectories by this redundancy resolution are tracked by robust PID controller. Numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • A method is presented to find the location and magnitude of damage in a structure using data from dynamic tests. The test data include a combination of natural frequency measurements, taken before and after the occurrence of damage, and response measurements taken after damage. An algorithm is developed to identify localized increases in the flexibility of the structural members. Increases in flexibility are attributed to damage. The algorithm uses the sensitivity of the flexibility matrix to changes in the natural frequencies of the structure to identify the damage. A set of under determined equations is solved using an objective function which is derived from measurements of the system moments. Damage ranging from 10 to 60% increase in the flexibility of a member was successfully identified in a 50 d.o.f. structure, using a small number of natural frequency and velocity measurements.
