Hierarchical mesoporous ZSM-5 with enhanced mesoporosity was synthesized by microwave through the rapid assembly via ionic interaction between sulfonic acid functionalized ZSM-5 nano particles and cationic surfactant. The catalytic performance of enhanced accessibility due to mesoporosity and acidity were investigated in the alkylation of mesitylene with benzyl alcohol as alkylating agent. The effect of mole ratio of aromatic with benzyl alcohol, reaction time and alkylation agent were also studied. The enhanced mesoporosity and acidity of sulfonic acid functionalized mesoporous ZSM-5 induced activity enhancement compared with non-functionalized mesoporous ZSM-5, sulfonic functionalized mesoporous ZSM-5 synthesized by hydrothermal method and conventional microporous ZSM-5. The sulfonic acid functionalized mesoporous ZSM-5 showed much higher chemoselectivity of benzylated mesitylene than others, whereas the others mainly show dibenzyl ether as product. This significant difference in catalytic selectivity was resulted from the existence of mesopores, which definitely allowed the benzylation in mesopores.
In this work, the activated carbons (ACs) with high micropores were synthesized from the polystyrene (PS) with KOH as activating agent. And the influence of activation temperature on porosity of the ACs studied was investigated. The porous structures of ACs were characterized by nitrogen adsorption at 77K using BET and D-R equations, and MP and BJH methods. The weight loss behaviors of the samples impregnated with KOH were also monitored using thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). As a result, it was found that the samples could be successfully converted into ACs with well-developed micropores. From the results of pore size analysis, it was confirmed that elevated activation temperature does lead to the formation and deepening of microstructures without significant change in mesostructures. A thermogravimetric study showed that KOH could suppress the thermal decomposition of the sample, resulting in the increase of carbon yields.

We studied a simple approach for synthesis of mesoporous Y(M-Y) from commercial zeolite Y precursors by treating of NaOH with $CH_3(CH_2)_{15}N(Br)(CH_3)_3$ as template. The physicochemical properties of the mesoporous zeolites Y were then analyzed using XRD, nitrogen full-isotherms at 77 K, SEM and TEM. The nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis showed that surface area and pore diameter of synthesized mesoporous zeolite Y(M-Y) were $1072m^2/g$ and ~3.3 nm, respectively. And M-Y was applied for the removal of $Mn^{2+}$ and $Fe^{2+}$ from aqueous solution. This material, which introduces mesoporosity with zeolite Y character, displayed a superior adsorption capacity than commercial zeolite Y when used as an adsorbent for the removal of $Mn^{2+}$ and $Fe^{2+}$.

Hierarchical N doped TiO2 nanostructured catalyst with micro, meso and macro porosity have been synthesized by a facile self-formation route using ammonia and titanium isopropoxide precursor. The samples were calcined in different calcination temperature ranging from $300^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$ at slow heating rate ($5^{\circ}C$/min) and designated as NHPT-300 to NHPT-800. $TiO_2$ nanostructured catalyst have been characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopy methods to explore the structural, electronic and optical properties. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra confirmed the red shift and band gap narrowing due to the doping of N species in TiO2 nanoporous catalyst. Hierarchical macro porosity with fibrous channel patterning was observed (confirmed from FESEM) and well preserved even after calcination at $800^{\circ}C$, indicating the thermal stability. BET results showed that micro and mesoporosity was lost after $500^{\circ}C$ calcination. The photocatalytic activity has been evaluated for methanol oxidation to formaldehyde in visible light. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to combined synergetic effect of N doping for visible light absorption, micro and mesoporosity for increase of effective surface area and light harvestation, and hierarchical macroporous fibrous structure for multiple reflection and effective charge transfer.
Coloured wastewater is released as a direct result of the production of dyes as well as from various other chemical industries. Many dyes and their breakdown products may be toxic for living organisms. Activated carbon is one of the best materials for removal of dyes from aqueous solutions. The present study describes the adsorption behaviour of methylene blue dye on three microporous activated carbons, where two samples (AC-1 and AC-2) were prepared by a polymer blend technique and the other is a microporous activated carbon (ARY-3) sample from viscose rayon yarn prepared by chemical-physical activation. The effects of contact time and activated carbon dosage on decolourisation capacity have been studied. The results show that activated carbon having mixed microporosity and mesoporosity show tremendous decolourisation capacity for methylene blue. In addition, the activated carbon in the powder form prepared by the polymer blend technique shows better decolourisation capacity for methylene blue than the activated rayon yarn sample.

A study is presented of the adsorption capacity of a number of different activated carbons for hydrogen at 100 bar aad 298 K. The hydrogen adsorption isotherm was measured by isothermal gravimetric analysis, using a microbalance. The effect of activated carbon's porosity on hydrogen adsorption capacity is surveyed. It is concluded that hydrogen adsorption capacity of activated carbon is lineally increased according to the increase of specific surface area and total pore volume, It seems that microporosity is more contributive than mesoporosity. Most of the adsorbed quantity is due to physical adsorption and chemisorption is negligible, In this work, 0.79 wt.% of hydrogen adsorption capacity is reached.

The objective of this work was to examine the influence of carbonation on the microstructure of cement materials. Different materials, which were CEM I mortar and paste, CEM II mortar and paste, were carbonated at $20^{\circ}C$, 65 % relative humidity and 20 % of $CO_2$ concentration. The specific surface area and pore size distribution were determined from two methods: nitrogen adsorption and water adsorption. The results showed that: (1) nitrogen adsorption and water adsorption do not cover the same porous domains and thus, we observed conflicts in the results obtained by these two techniques; (2) the CEM II based materials seemed to be more sensible to a creation of mesoporosity after carbonation than the CEM I based materials. The results of this study also helped to explain why observations in the literature diverge greatly on the influence of carbonation on specific surface area.

Recently, much interest on mesoporous carbon has been shown in their use for both hydrogen and methane storage and as an electrode material for electric double layer capacitors. The mesoporous active carbons by ion exchange were prepared and physical properties such as specific surface area and pore structure of active carbon were investigated using BET. In this study, active carbons with mesopore fraction of $60{\sim}90%$ were obtained. The Fe/Ca-exchanged active carbons showed a greater mesoporosity compared with Fe-exchanged carbons. The mean mesopore size in active carbons using Ca- and Fe-exchange was about $5.5{\sim}6.0nm$ and was approximately 1nm higher than that of the Fe-exchanged active carbon.
One of the most abundant microalgaes, diatom is characterized by its unique cell wall structures composed of nano-patterned silica. Due to its highly ordered porosity, these silica frustules, which are found as sediments called diatomite, were used as a cheap adsorption material for water purification. Recently, new emerging nanotechnology compels many researchers to have interest in such diatom's unique properties (eg, nano-scale mesoporosity, photo luminescence, light transparency, etc.) as biogenic inorganic materials as well as the biomass resource (conventional usage of microalgae). In this review, we will focus on the current knowledge about the diatoms research and the possibility of its applications.
Microporous carbons with narrow pore size distribution have been successfully synthesized by using hydrolyzed and calcined silica as templates and phenol formaldehyde (pf) resin as carbon precursor. Phenol formaldehyde-silica micro composites were prepared by solution route. Subsesequently, silica templates were removed by HF leaching. Resulting carbons were steam activated. The porous carbons were characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm, SEM, FTIR analysis, iodine adsorption, thermogravimetry analysis, etc. Adsorption isotherms show that the porous carbon prepared from calcined silica as templates are microporous with 88% pores of size <2 nm porosity and are of type I isotherm, while porous carbon prepared by using hydrolyzed silica are microporous with 89% microporosity, shows hysteresis loop at high relative pressure indicating the presence of some mesoporosity in samples. The microporosity in porous carbon materials has a bearing on the nature of silica templates used for pore formation.
