  • In recent years, methanol has attracted much attention since it can be cleanly manufactured by the combined use of atmospheric $CO_2$ recycling and water splitting via renewable energy. For the concept of "methanol economy", an active methanol synthesis catalyst should be prepared in a sophisticated manner rather than by empirical optimization approach. Even though Cu/ZnO-based catalysts prepared by coprecipitation are well known and have been extensively investigated even for a century, fundamental understanding on the precipitation chemistry and catalyst nanostructure has recently been achieved due to complexity of the necessary preparation steps such as precipitation, ageing, filtering, washing, drying, calcination and reduction. Herein we review the recent reports regarding the effects of various synthesis variables in each step on the physicochemical properties of materials in precursor, calcined and reduced states. The relationship between these characteristics and the catalytic performance will also be discussed because many variables in each step strongly influence the final catalytic activity, called "chemical memory". All discussion focuses on how to prepare a highly active Cu/ZnO-based catalyst for methanol synthesis. Furthermore, the preparation strategy we deliver here would be utilized for designing other coprecipitation-derived supported metal or metal oxide catalysts.

  • Uptime of embedded processors for mobile devices are dependent on battery consumption. Especially the large portion of power consumption is known to be due to cache management in embedded processors. This paper proposes an energy efficient data cache structure for high performance embedded processors. High performance prefetching data cache issues prefetching instructions before issuing demand-fetch instructions based on reference predictions. These prefetching instruction bring reduction on memory delay by improving cache hit ratio, but on the other hand those increase energy consumption in proportion to the number of prefetching instructions. In this paper, we adopt tag history table on prefetching data cache for reducing energy consumption by minimizing parallel tag comparison. Experimental results show the proposed data cache improves performance on energy consumption as well as memory delay.

  • In this paper, we present an empirical study for improving the Korean text chunking based on machine learning and feature set selection approaches. We focus on two issues: the problem of selecting feature set for Korean chunking, and the problem of alleviating the data sparseness. To select a proper feature set, we use a heuristic method of searching through the space of feature sets using the estimated performance from a machine learning algorithm as a measure of "incremental usefulness" of a particular feature set. Besides, for smoothing the data sparseness, we suggest a method of using a general part-of-speech tag set and selective lexical information under the consideration of Korean language characteristics. Experimental results showed that chunk tags and lexical information within a given context window are important features and spacing unit information is less important than others, which are independent on the machine teaming techniques. Furthermore, using the selective lexical information gives not only a smoothing effect but also the reduction of the feature space than using all of lexical information. Korean text chunking based on the memory-based learning and the decision tree learning with the selected feature space showed the performance of precision/recall of 90.99%/92.52%, and 93.39%/93.41% respectively.

  • Effect of the processes of polysilazane solid electrolyte layer and silver (Ag) active electrode on the electrical characteristics of memristor was investigated. The memristor with the solid electrolyte annealed at higher temperature exhibited the higher set voltage and better memory retention characteristics than that annealed at lower temperature. The increase in the set voltage and the improvement of the memory retention characteristic at high annealing temperature were attributed to a reduction in the void density and an increase in the void uniformity inside the solid electrolyte, respectively. In the case where the polysilazane solution's concentration is high, the memristor exhibited rapid degradation of low resistive state even annealed at high temperature. Lastly, it was shown that the memristor with the solution-processed Ag active electrode showed WORM property unlike that with the vacuum-processed Ag active electrode. The WORM property was possibly due to morphological defects present in the solution-processed Ag active electrode.

  • In this paper, we designed an MLSA(Match-line Sense Amplifier) for low-power CAM(Content Addressable Memory). By using the MLSA and precharge controller, we reduced power consumption during CAM operation by employing a selective match-line charging technique to mitigate power consumption caused by mismatch. Additionally, we further reduced power consumption due to leakage current by terminating precharge early when a mismatch occurs during the search operation. The designed circuit exhibited superior performance compared to the existing circuits, with a reduction of 6.92% and 23.30% in power consumption and propagation delay time, respectively. Moreover, it demonstrated a significant decrease of 29.92% and 52.31% in product-delay-product (PDP) and energy-delay-product (EDP). The proposed circuit was validated using SPECTRE simulation with TSMC 65nm CMOS process.

  • Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia in the elderly, and its pathology is characterized by the presence of numerous numbers of senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Several genetic and transgenic studies have indicated that excess amount of $\beta$-amyloid protein (A$\beta$) is produced by mutations of $\beta$TEX>$\beta$-amyloid precursor protein and causes learning impairment. Moreover, $A\beta$ has a toxic effect on cultured nerve cells. To prepare AD model animals, we have examined continuous (2 weeks) infusion of $A\beta$ into the cerebral ventricle of rats. Continuous infusion of $A\beta$ induces learning impairment in water maze and passive avoidance tasks, and decreases choline acetyltransferase activity in the frontal cortex and hippocampus. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed diffuse depositions of $A\beta$ in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus around the ventricle. Furthermore, the nicotine-evoked release of acetylcholine and dopamine in the frontal cortex/hippocampus and striatum, respectively, is decreased in the $A\beta$-infused group. Perfusion of nicotine (50 $\mu\textrm{M}$) reduced the amplitude of electrically evoked population spikes in the CA1 pyramidal cells of the control group, but not in those of the $A\beta$-infused group, suggesting the impairment of nicotinic signaling in the $A\beta$-infused group. In fact, Kd, but not Bmax, values for [$^3H$] cytisine binding in the hippocampus significantly increased in the $A\beta$-infused rats. suggesting the decrease in affinity of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Long-term potentiation (LTP) induced by tetanic stimulations in CA1 pyramidal cells, which is thought to be an essential mechanism underlying learning and memory, was readily observed in the control group, whereas it was impaired in the $A\beta$-infused group. Taken together, these results suggest that $A\beta$ infusion impairs the signal transduction mechanisms via nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. This dysfunction may be responsible, at least in part, for the impairment of LTP induction and may lead to learning and memory impairment. We also found the reduction of glutathione- and Mn-superoxide dismutase-like immunoreactivity in the brains of $A\beta$-infused rats. Administration of antioxidants or nootropics alleviated learning and memory impairment induced by $A\beta$ infusion. We believe that investigation of currently available transgenic and non-transgenic animal models for AD will help to clarify the pathogenic mechanisms and allow assessment of new therapeutic strategies.

  • This paper describes a core generator (FFT_Core_Gen) which generates Verilog HDL models of 8 different FFT/IFFT cores with $N=64{\times}2^k$($0{\leq}k{\leq}7$ for OFDM-based communication systems. The generated FFT/IFFT cores are based on in-place single memory architecture, and use a hybrid structure of radix-4 and radix-2 DIF algorithm to accommodate various FFT lengths. To achieve both memory reduction and the improved SQNR, a conditional scaling technique is adopted, which conditionally scales the intermediate results of each computational stage, and the internal data and twiddle factor has 14 bits. The generated FFT/IFFT cores have the SQNR of 58-dB for N=8,192 and 63-dB for N=64. The cores synthesized with a $0.35-{\mu}m$ CMOS standard cell library can operate with 75-MHz@3.3-V, and a 8,192-point FFT can be computed in $762.7-{\mu}s$, thus the cores satisfy the specifications of wireless LAN, DMB, and DVB systems.

  • Rodent model for chronic cerebral hypoperfusion caused by bilateral carotid artery occlusion (BCAO) show clinically relevant evidences for vascular dementia and impairments of synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus. The purpose of this study was to evaluate effect of fermented garlic (F-Garlic) extract with NO metabolites on cognitive behaviors, synaptic plasticity, and molecular events in the hippocampus following BCAO. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided three experimental groups into: control+water; BCAO+water; BCAO+F-Garlic. Animals were treated with oral administration of F-Garlic in tap water as a drinking water after surgery for 4 weeks. On passive avoidance test and Y-maze test, BCAO+water showed a significant decrease in step-through latency and spontaneous alteration, indicating deficit of hippocampal memory formation but the treatment of F-Garlic significantly increased these cognitive behaviors. In control+water, a robust increase in the amplitude of evoked field excitatory postsynaptic potentials was observed by theta burst stimulation to hippocampal neural circuit indicating formation of long-term potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampal CA1. BCAO+water showed a highly significant deficit in LTP induction 4 weeks after BCAO. On other hand, daily oral administration of F-Garlic extract caused the marked preservation of LTP induction. Moreover, parvalbumin was markedly reduced in the CA1, especially, in the stratum radiatum of BCAO+water. In contrast, BCAO+F-Garlic mitigate a significantly reduction of the parvalbumin. In summary, these results suggest that daily oral administration of F-Garlic extract can ameliorate cognitive memory deficit through the preservation of synaptic plasticity and interneurons integrity in the hippocampus in rodent model of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion.

  • DNA methylation is an epigenetic mechanism for gene silencing. In Arabidopsis, MET1 is the primary DNA methyltransferase that maintains CG DNA methylation. Plants having an overall reduction of MET1 activity, caused by a met1 mutation or a constitutively expressed MET1 antisense gene, display genome hypomethylation, inappropriate gene and transposon transcription, and developmental abnormalities. However, the effect of a transient reduction in MET1 activity caused by inhibiting MET1 expression in a restricted set of cells is not known. For this reason, we generated transgenic plants with a MET1 antisense gene fused to the DEMETER (DME) promoter (DME:MET1 a/s). Here we show that DME is expressed in leaf primordia, lateral root primoridia, in the region distal to the primary root apical meristem, which are regions that include proliferating cells. Endogenous MET1 expression was normal in organs where the DME:MET1 a/s was not expressed. Although DME promoter is active only in a small set of cells, these plants displayed global developmental abnormalities. Moreover, centromeric repeats were hypomethylated. The developmental defects were accumulated by the generations. Thus, not maintaining CG methylation in a small population of proliferating cells flanking the meristems causes global developmental and epigenetic abnormalities that cannot be rescued by restoring MET1 activity. These results suggest that during plant development there is little or no short-term molecular memory for reestablishing certain patterns of CG methylation that are maintained by MET1. Thus, continuous MET1 activity in dividing cells is essential for proper patterns of CG DNA methylation and development.

  • Real time strategy game is a computer game genre of Playing with human or computer opponents in real time It differs from turn-type computer games in the game process method. Turn type games, such as chess, allow only one Player to move at a time. Real time strategy games allow two or more Players to move simultaneously. Therefore, in real time strategy computer games, the game components' movement plans must be calculated very quickly in order to not disturb other processes such as gathering resources, building structures, and combat activities. There are many approaches, which can reduce the amount of memory required for calculating path, search space, and reactive time of components. (or units). However, existing path finding algorithms tend to concentrate on achieving optimal Paths that are not as important or crucial in real time strategy game. This Paper introduces Dynamic Heuristic Af(DHA*) algorithm which is capable of reducing search space and reactive time of game units and compares with A* algorithm using static heuristic weighting.
