[ $Ag^+$ ]-Chitosan Complex Membranes for Propylene/Propane Separation

  • We have prepared new water-swollen chitosan-$Ag^+$ complex membranes and studied their permeation and separation behavior for propylene and propane gases. The $Ag^+$ containing chitosan complex membranes were prepared from chitosan and $AgNO_3$ aqueous solution. The $AgNO_3$ and water content in the membrane were controlled by adjusting $AgNO_3$ concentration of casting solution. The permeation properties of propylene and propane were investigated as a function of $AgNO_3$ concentration, and various operation conditions. High permeability of above 17 barrer and high selectivity of above 170 could be obtained with the membranes prepared from 3 M $AgNO_3$ aqueous solution. Periodic regeneration test confirmed these membranes could be very useful for the separation of propylene/propane and other olefin/paraffin separation.

팔라듐 합금 수소분리막의 내구성 향상 (Improvement in Long-term Stability of Pd Alloy Hydrogen Separation Membranes)

  • Pd alloy hydrogen membranes for hydrogen purification and separation need thermal stability at high temperature for commercial applications. Intermetallic diffusion between the Pd alloy film and the porous metal support gives rise to serious problems in long-term stability of Pd alloy membranes. Ceramic barriers are widely used to prevent the intermetallic diffusion from the porous metal support. However, these layers result in poor adhesion at the interface between film and barrier because of the fundamentally poor chemical affinity and a large thermal stress. In this study, we developed Pd alloy membranes having a dense microstructure and saturated composition on modified metal supports by advanced DC magnetron sputtering and heat treatment for enhanced thermal stability. Experimental results showed that Pd-Cu and Pd-Ag alloy membranes had considerably enhanced long-term stability owing to stable, dense alloy film microstructure and saturated composition, effective diffusion barrier, and good adhesive interface layer.

산/염기 제조를 위한 바이폴라막의 물분해 특성 연구 (A Study on water-splitting characteristics of bipolar membranes for acid/base generation)

  • 1. Introduction : The clean technology using ion exchange membranes have drawn attention increasingly with advancement of the membrane synthesis. Ion exchange membranes have been used for diffusion dialysis, electrodialysis, electrodialytic water splitting and electrodeionization. Bipolar membranes(BPM), consisting of a cation exchange layer and an an_ion exchange layer, can convert a salt to an acid and a base without chemical addition. Using the bipolar membrane, a large quantity of industrial wastes containing salts can be reprocessed to generate acids and bases. Recent development of high performance bipolar membranes enables to further expand the potential use of electrodialysis in the chemical industry. The water-splitting mechanism in the bipolar membrane, however, is a controversial subject yet. In this study bipolar membranes were prepared using commercial ion exchange membranes and hydrophilic polymer as a binder to investigate the effects of the interface hydrophilicity on water-splitting efficiency. In addition, the water splitting mechanism by a metal catalyst was discussed.

새로운 내산성 PVA가교막을 이용한 불화에탄을 수용액과 메타크릴산 수용액의 투과증발분리 (Pervaporation of Fluoroethano1 and Methacrylic Acid Aqueous Solution Through New Acid-resistant Poly(vinyl alcohol) Membranes)

  • 본 연구는 에스텔화 막반응공정에 의한 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl metacrylate (TFEMA)의 생산을 위한 선행연구로, 가교된 poly(vinyl alcohol)막을 이용하여 TFEA (2,2,2-trifluoroethanol)/water과 MA (methacrylic acid)/water 혼합용액을 대상으로 투과증발특성을 연구하였다. 산 저항성을 가진 가교된 PVA막은 PVA와 EGDE를 같이 녹인 수용액을 Teflon plate 위에 캐스팅한 후 $140^{\circ}C$에서 열 가교시킴으로써 제조하였다. 제조된 막의 특성을 알아보기 위해 FT-IR과 팽윤도 측정을 실시하였다. TFEA/water 혼합용액에 대한 투과증발실험은 가교제인 EGDE농도와 운전온도를 변화시켜가면서 실시하였으며, MA/water 혼합용액에 대한 투과증발실험은 최적화된 PVA막을 가지고 실시하였다. 투과증발실험결과로부터 제조된 막은 TFEA와 MA의 에스테르화 반응온도인 $80^{\circ}C$ 이상에서 $96\%$의 TFEA 및 MA 수용액에 대해 각각 100, 900 이상의 매우 높은 물에 대한 선택도와 0.1, $0.3\;kg/m^2h$의 투과도를 얻을 수 있었다.

On the drying out of bipolar membranes

  • The maximum current density that can be achieved in bipolar membrane electrodialysis is limited by the sharp increase in resistance that is experienced when the water content at the membrane interface is not adequately replenished and the membranes dry out. In this paper we show how the water content near the interface depends on the properties of the membranes. A water retaining parameter is introduced, which characterizes the thermodynamic properties of the membrane material and may be used to guide the choice of polymers for mitigation of the dry-out problem.

Pervaporation of TFEA/MA/Water Mixtures through PVA Composite Membranes

  • In order to investigate applicability for 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA) produced by esterification of 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol(TFEA) and methacrylic acid(MA) using pervaporation membrane, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composite membranes were prepared with glutaraldehyde(GA) onto porous polyethersulfone(PES) support. The degree of crosslinking and thickness of PVA coating layer were analyzed by swelling test and SEM(scanning electron microscopy), respectively. Pervaporation test was done with two feed mixures; TFEA/water, MA/water. The pervaporation data were obtained as a function of content of crosslinking agent, feed composition, and operating temperature, respectively. In case of TFEA-water(90/10 wt%) feed mixture at $80^{\circ}C$, the optimized membrane showed the high permeation flux of 1.5 $kg/m^2hr$ and separation factor of 320. In case of MA-water(90/10 wt%) feed mixture, the membranealso showed high permeation flux of 2.3 $kg/m^2hr$ and separation factor of 740 in same conditions.

아스팔트 포장 조건이 교면방수 시스템의 인장접착강도에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Asphalt Pavement Conditions on Tensile Adhesive Strength of Waterproofing System on Concrete Bridge Deck)

  • In this research, eight waterproofing membranes were selected from commercial market and the tensile adhesive characteristics of the waterproofing system (WPS) on concrete bridge deck were investigated in view of various factor in asphalt pavement. Tensile adhesive strength (TAS) test of different asphalt pavement types showed that TAS of WPS under SMA (Stone Mastic Asphalt) pavement was greater than that under dense asphalt pavement. Tensile adhesive strength (TAS) of sheet membranes was improved as the compaction temperature of asphalt concrete increase, but TAS of liquid membranes were not. TAS of sheet membranes after wheel tracking test were in the order of the sites under wheel path (UWP), before wheel tracking (BWT) and nearby wheel path (NWP), Since TAS of the same WPS of UWP was higher than TAS of BWT, wheel loading had function of pressing WPS resulting in higher adhesive strength, But liquid membranes were variable on types, The feature of detached interface after T AS test showed that sheet types were all detached in between deck concrete and WPS, and liquid types were detached in between asphalt pavement and WPS,

Fundamental parameters of nanoporous filtration membranes

  • The design theory for nanoporous filtration membranes needs to be established. The present study shows that the performance and technical advancement of nanoporous filtration membranes are determined by the fundamental parameter I (in the unit Watt1/2) which is formulated as a function of the shear strength of the liquid-pore wall interface, the radius of the filtration pore, the membrane thickness, and the bulk dynamic viscosity of the flowing liquid. This parameter determines the critical power loss on a single filtration pore for initiating the wall slippage, which is important for the flux of the membrane. It also relates the membrane permeability to the power cost by the filtration pore. It is shown that for biological cellular membranes its values are on the scale 1.0E-8Watt1/2, for mono-layer graphene membranes its values are on the scale 1.0E-9Watt1/2, and for nanoporous membranes made of silica, silicon nitride or silicon carbonized its values are on the scale 1.0E-5Watt1/2. The scale of the value of this parameter directly measures the level of the performance of a nanoporous filtration membrane. The carbon nanotube membrane has the similar performance with biological cellular membranes, as it also has the value of I on the scale 1.0E-8Watt1/2.

연료전지를 위한 술폰화된 Perfluorocyclobutyl Biphenylene 고분자 전해질막 (Sulfonated Perfluorocyclobutyl Biphenylene Polymer Electrolyte Membranes for Fuel Cells)

  • 본 연구는 연료전지에 적용 가능한 술폰화된 고분자 이온교환막 개발에 관한 것으로, perfluorocyclobutane ring(PFCB)을 함유한 4,4'-biphenylene perfluorocyclobutyl ether 고분자를 합성하여 이를 술폰화제인 chlorosulfonic acid (CSA)와 용매인 dichloromethane (DCC) 혼합용액을 사용하여 후술폰화시킴으로써 PFCB기를 함유한 술폰화된 biphenylene 고분자 막을 제조하였다. 술폰화된 고분자의 제조시 biphenylene perfluorocyclobutyl ether 고분자와 CSA의 몰비를 각각 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4로 변화시켜주어 다양한 술폰산기의 함량을 갖는 이온교환막을 제조할 수 있었다. 합성된 화합물과 고분자는 NMR과 GPC를 통해서 분석 및 확인하였고, 술폰화된 막을 이용하여 술폰산기의 함량 변화에 따른 술폰화도, 이온교환용량, 함수율, 이온전도도 등을 측정하였다. 측정 결과, 술폰화도가 증가함에 따라 이온전도도, 이온교환용량 및 함수율이 연속적으로 증가하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
