In order to develop a new line injection system for spin draw yarn (FD SDY) fibers, the effect of various parameters in extrusion and melt line conditions on the dispersion and distribution of $TiO_2$ particles within FD PET fibers was investigated. As a result, the dispersibility of $TiO_2$ particles in a PET matrix is found to depend on the particle size and its surface characteristics. Surface modification of $TiO_2$ by dimethyl polysiloxane resulted in the improved dispersibility and affinity of $TiO_2$ particles in the PET matrix. Especially, residence time, mixing temperature, and mixing shear rate in the new line injection system under the SDY spinning process were very important parameters to minimize the agglomeration of $TiO_2$ particles. The FD SDY prepared by the new line injection system was superior to those using the polymerization process and the conventional masterbatch chip dosing process in the color-L and color-b values of the fibers.
In the present study, the effect of yttrium addition on the microstructure and mechanical property of rapidly solidified AZ91 alloy by melt spinning process is estimated. As yttrium was added, the microstructure of RS ribbons and extrudates became finer than those of AZ91, and RE related phases $(Al_2RE)$ were formed. In the case of the addition of 3wt%Y, the microstructure of extrude showed the finest grain size. At room temperature, the AZ91 + 3wt%Y alloy showed the highest tensile strength, 352 MPA due to precipitation of ${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$ phase and $Al_2RE$ phase. At the elevated temperature, the mechanical property of AZ91 + 3wt%Y alloy was higher than those of other Mg alloys. The reasons were that $Al_2Y$ compound was thermally stable and suppressed the grain growth. In contrast with $Al_2Y$ compounds, ${\beta}$ phase was thermally unstable and could not suppress the grain growth at the elevated temperature. Therefore, $Al_2Y$ phase contributed to improve the thermal stability of RS AZ91 alloy.
In the present study, the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of $Al_{71.6}Ge_{28.4}$ eutectic alloy have been investigated. Stable (fcc ${\alpha}$-Al and diamond cubic ${\beta}$-Ge) and various metastable crystalline (monoclinic, rhombohedral) phases were produced by competitive phase selection during non-equilibrium processing methods i.e. melt spinning and injection casting. The as-injection casted samples containing metastable-equilibrium eutectic (${\alpha}$-Al + monoclinic) structure showed much higher strength than samples with equilibrium eutectic (${\alpha}-Al+{\beta}-Ge$) structure but plasticity disappointingly diminished. In order to endow the enhanced ductility without significant strength drop, the alloys was heat-treated at transition temperature from metastable phase to stable phase. The annealed specimen displayed the phase transformed microstructural evolution and enhanced macroscopic plasticity.
An attempt was made in this study to investigate the brazing characteristics of Zr-Be binary amorphous alloys for the development of a new brazing filler metal for joining Zircaloy-4 nuclear fuel cladding tubes. This study was also aimed at the feasibility study of rapidly solidified amorphous alloys to substitute the conventional physical vapor-deposited(PVD) metallic beryllium. The $Zr_{1-x}Be_{x}$($0.3\leq$x$\leq0.5$) binary amorphous alloys were produced in the ribbon form by the melt-spinning method. It was confirmed by x-ray diffraction that the ribbons were amorphous. The amorphous. the amorphous alloys were used to join bearing pads on Zircaloy-4 nuclear fuel cladding tubes. Using Zr-Be amorphous alloys as filler metals, it was found that the reduction in the tube wall thickness caused by erosion was prevented. Especially, in the case of using $Zr_{0.65}Be_{0.35}$ and $Zr_{0.7}Be_{0.3}$ amorphousalloys, the smooth and spherical primary $\alpha$-Zr particles appeared in the brazed layer, which was the most desirable microstructure from the corrosion-resistance standpoint.
PLA/LPCL/HPCL blend fibers composed of poly (lactic acid) (PLA), low molecular weight poly ($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (LPCL), and high molecular weight poly ($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (HPCL) were prepared by melt blending and spinning for bioabsorbable filament sutures. The effects of blending time and blend composition on the X-ray diffraction patterns and tensile properties of PLA/LPCL/HPCL blend fibers were characterized by WAXD and UTM. In addition, the effect of in vitro degradation on the weight loss and tensile properties of the blend fibers hydrolyzed during immersion in a phosphate buffer solution at pH 7.4 and 37$^{\circ}C$ for 1-8 weeks was investigated. The peak intensities of PLA/LPCL/HPCL blend fibers in X-ray diffraction patterns decreased with an increase of blending time and LPCL contents in the blend fibers. The weight loss of PLA/LPCL/HPCL blend fibers increased with an increase of blending time, LPCL contents, and hydrolysis time while the tensile strength and modulus of the blend fibers decreased. The tensile strength and modulus of the blend fibers were also found to be increased with an increase of HPCL contents in the blend fibers. The optimum conditions to prepare PLA/LPCL/HPCL blend fibers for bioabsorbable sutures are LPCL contents of $5 wt\%, HPCL contents of $35 wt\%, and blending time of 30 min. The strength retention of the PLA/LPCL/HPCL blend fiber prepared under optimum conditions was about $93.5\% even at hydrolysis time of 2 weeks.
We have carried out the study of magnetocaloric effect for as-quenched and annealed $Fe_{91-x}Y_xZr_9$ alloys. Samples were prepared by arc melting the high-purity elemental constituents under argon gas atmosphere and by single roller melt spinning. These alloys were annealed one hour at 773 K in vacuum chamber. The magnetization behaviours of the samples were measured by vibrating sample magnetometer. The Curie temperature increases with increasing Y concentration (x=0 to 8). Temperature dependence of the entropy variation ${\Delta}S_M$ was found to appear in the vicinity of the Curie temperature. The results show that annealed $Fe_{86}Y_5Zr_9$ and $Fe_{83}Y_8Zr_9$ alloys a bigger magnetocaloric effect than that those in as-quenched alloys. The value is 1.23 J/kg K for annealed $Fe_{86}Y_5Zr_9$ alloy and 0.89 J/kg K for as-quenched alloy, respectively. In addition, the values of ${\Delta}S_M$ for $Fe_{83}Y_8Zr_9$ alloy is 0.72 J/Kg K for as-quenched and 1.09 J/Kg K for annealed alloy, respectively.
The effect of the B additions on glass formation and magnetic properties is reported for the $Fe_{(87-x-y)}Co_yTi_7Zr_6B_x$ (x = 2, 4, 6 and y = 35, 40) alloy system. The ribbon samples with the width of 2 mm for each composition were prepared by the melt spinning technique; furthermore, their phase information was obtained from X-ray diffraction. Glass formation and magnetic properties were measured using differential scanning calorimetry and vibrating sample magnetometer respectively. The $Fe_{45}Co_{40}Ti_7Zr_6B_2$ (x = 2 and y = 40) system has the nanocrystalline phase identified as ${\alpha}-Fe$, as well as the amorphous phase, whereas all other alloys are fully amorphous. It is associated with the role of B on the glass formation. The widest supercooled liquid region is obtained as 71 K at x = 4 (both y = 35 and 40). The saturation magnetization decreases with the increase of the amount of the B addition, and the highest value is 1.59 T as x = 2 and y = 35 for this alloy system.

The Fe-Si-B-Nb-Cu alloys containing Ca and Al were rapidly solidified to thin ribbons by melt-spinning. The ribbons were ball-milled to make powders, and then mixed with 1 wt.% water glass and 1.5 wt.% lubricant. The mixed powders were burn-off, and then compacted to form toroidal-shaped cores, which were heat treated to crystallize the nano-grain structure and to remove residual stress of material. The characteristics of the powder cores were analyzed using a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and a B-H meter. The microstructures were observed using transmission electron microscope (TEM). The optimized soft magnetic properties (${\mu}_i$ and $P_{cv}$) of the powder cores were obtained from the Ca and Al containing alloys after annealing at $530^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The core loss of Fe-Si-B-Nb-Cu-based powder cores was reduced by the addition of Ca element, and the initial permeability increased due to the addition of Al element.
Mischmetal of Bayan Obo ore was utilized to prepare the high performance $(Pr_{7.34}Nd_{21.86})_{1-x}MM_xFe_{68.7}Al_{0.1}Cu_{0.12}Co_{0.88}B$ ribbons using melt-spinning method. Phase composition and magnetic properties were investigated at room temperature. The ribbons mainly consist of $R_2Fe_{14}B$ phase in isotropic nanostructure. Both coercivity and maximum energy product decrease with the increase of MM content. The magnetic parameters of the ribbons with MM = 20 % in mass are $B_r=7.38kGs$, $H_{cj}=13.66kOe$, $(BH)_{max}=11.81MGOe$. Henkel plots were applied to demonstrate the exchange coupling interaction between grains.
Polyaluminocarbosilane was synthesized by direct reaction of polydimethylsilane with aluminum(III)-acetylacetonate in the presence of zeolite catalyst. A fraction of higher molecular weight polycarbosilane was formed due to the binding of aluminium acetylacetonate radicals with the polycarbosilane backbone. Small amount of Si-O-Si bond was observed in the as-prepared polyaluminocarbosilane as the result. Polyaluminocarbosilane fiber was obtained through a melt spinning and was pyrolyzed and sintered into SiC fiber from $1200{\sim}2000^{\circ}C$ under a controlled atmosphere. The nucleation and growth of ${\beta}-SiC$ grains between $1400{\sim}1600^{\circ}C$ are accompanied with nano pores formation and residual carbon generation. Above $1800^{\circ}C$, SiC fiber could be sintered to give a fully crystallized ${\beta}-SiC$ with some ${\alpha}-SiC$.
