A new type of topology with medium-frequency-transformer (MFT) isolation for medium voltage wind power generation systems is proposed in this paper. This type of converter is a high density power conversion system, with high performance features suitable for next generation wind power systems in either on-shore or off-shore applications. The proposed topology employs single-phase cascaded multi-level AC-AC converters on the grid side and three phase matrix converters on the generator side, which are interfaced by medium frequency transformers. This avoids DC-Link electrolytic capacitors and/or resonant L-C components in the power flow path thereby improving the power density and system reliability. Several configurations are given to fit different applications. The modulation and control strategy has been detailed. As two important part of the whole system, a novel single phase AC-AC converter topology with its reliable six-step switching technique and a novel symmetrical 11-segment modulation strategy for two stage matrix converter (TSMC) is proposed at the special situation of medium frequency chopping. The validity of the proposed concept has been verified by simulation results and experiment waveforms from a scaled down laboratory prototype.
Static inverters are essential devices onboard of rolling stock. State-of-the-art static inverters have an impact on both rail infrastructure and vehicle maintenance due to their new topology with new features. The paper describes two important aspects as examples of new features available in state-of-the-art static inverters: active input current control and the effects on the rail infrastructure as well as the detection of the state of charge and the state of health of batteries to simplify vehicle maintenance.
This paper proposes a hybrid-boost Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) for the Medium-Voltage (MV) Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) employed in subsea applications, such as oil and gas recovery. In the presented architecture, a hybrid-boost MMC with a reduced number of semiconductor devices driving a multiphase Induction Machine (IM) is investigated. The stepped output voltage generated by the MMC reduces or eliminates the filtering requirements. Moreover, the boosting capability of the proposed architecture eliminates the need for bulky low-frequency transformers at the converter output terminals. A detailed illustration of the hybrid-boost MMC operation, the expected limitations/constraints, and the voltage balancing technique are presented. A simulation model of the proposed MV hybrid-boost MMC-based five-phase IM drive has been built to investigate the system performance. Finally, a downscaled prototype has been constructed for experimental verification.

Currently, high data rate PLC(Power Line Communications), up to 100 Mbps, which use frequency bandwidth between 2 MHz and 30 MHz is investigated very hard, and commercial PLC modem for low voltage powerline network (indoor) is coming soon into communication market. For the purpose of developing a fit communication system which has little distortion of signal and attenuation, it is surely necessary to know about channel environments of powerline. Especially, the impedance measurement of the powerline and impedance matching are very important. As is known, since medium-voltage powerline (22.9 ㎸) is still working, it is not so simple to measure the powerline impedance. In our study, a portable impedance measurement equipment is developed. It consists of coupling capacitor, a drain coil and impedance matching transformer. The equipment is easily connected to medium voltage line and impedance of power line is measured using a network analyzer. Also, measurement results are used for impedance matching of PLC signal. In fact, matching transformer with several different impedances are used. The matching transformer is connected between coupling capacitor and signal port. In this paper, the developed portable impedance measurement equipment and impedance measurement results are presented. Also impedance matching technique using matching transformers will be explained. We showed the result of the improved performance by the impedance matching.
The paper investigates three types of transfer function methods for detecting displacements of winding in a model transformer. To acquire these transfer functions, the measuring method of input voltage, current and its response is used in impulse method. The applied impulse voltages had three rising times, which were short rising time (less than 0.6 ${\mu}s$), medium rising time (about 0.8 ${\mu}s$) and long rising time (about 1 ${\mu}s$) in front waves. Every 10 measurements of voltage and current waves were averaged from 50 measurements of voltage and current waves. These transfer functions were tested in normal, 24mm elevated and 48mm elevated windings conditions and were analyzed with correlation coefficients and spectrum deviations. In the analysis, the results depend on the types of transfer functions and the rising times of input voltages.
A capacitive wireless power transfer (C-WPT) system uses an electric field to transmit power through a physical isolation barrier which forms a pair of ac link capacitors between the metal plates. However, the physical dimension and low dielectric constant of the interface medium severely limit the effective link capacitance to a level comparable to the main switch output capacitance of the transmitting circuit, which thus narrows the soft-switching range in the light load condition. Moreover, by fundamental limit analysis, it can be proved that such a low link capacitance increases operating frequency and capacitor voltage stress in the full load condition. In order to handle these problems, this paper investigates optimal design of double matching transformer networks for C-WPT. Using mathematical analysis with fundamental harmonic approximation, a design guideline is presented to avoid unnecessarily high frequency operation, to suppress the voltage stress on the link capacitors, and to achieve wide ZVS range even with low link capacitance. Simulation and hardware implementation are performed on a 5-W prototype system equipped with a 256-pF link capacitance and a 200-pF switch output capacitance. Results show that the proposed scheme ensures zero-voltage-switching from full load to 10% load, and the switching frequency and the link capacitor voltage stress are kept below 250 kHz and 452 V, respectively, in the full load condition.
With high penetration of renewable energies, power electronic transformers (PETs) will be one of the most important infrastructures in the future power delivery and management system. In this study, an isolated bidirectional modular multilevel DC/DC converter is proposed for PET applications. A modular multilevel structure is adopted as switching valves to sustain medium voltages to achieve modular design and high reliability. Only one high-frequency transformer is used in the proposed converter, which significantly simplifies the circuit and galvanic insulation design. A dual-phase-shift modulation strategy is proposed to regulate the output power and achieve a simple voltage balancing control. A down-scaled (2 kW/20 kHz) prototype is constructed to demonstrate the proposed converter and verify the control strategy. The experimental results comply with the theoretical analysis well, with the highest power efficiency reaching 97.6%.

A new design method of the microwave multisection impedance transformer is proposed. This method is based on the inverse scattering theory using the frequency domain reflection coefficient of the transformer to be designed. In the first step, the permittivity profile of a virtual one-dimensional dielectric medium is reconstructed using the desired reflection coefficient. In the second step, the transformer which is equivalent to the reconstructed dielectric medium in view of reflection characteristics is synthesized. Theoretically, this method can be used to design the impedance matching transformers with arbitrary passband characteristics within the limit of the Bode-Fano criteria[1]. Our approach is examined for two design examples to show that it is valid.
In this paper a modular high performance MV-to-LV rectifier based on a cascaded H-bridge rectifier is presented. The proposed rectifier can directly connect to the medium voltage levels and provide a low-voltage and highly-stable DC interface with the consumer applications. The input stage eliminates the necessity for heavy and bulky step-down transformers. It corrects the input power factor and maintains the voltage balance among the individual DC buses. The second stage includes the high frequency parallel-output DC/DC converters which prepares the galvanic isolation, regulates the output voltage, and attenuates the low frequency voltage ripple ($2f_{line}$) generated by the first stage. The parallel-output converters can work in interleaving mode and the active load-current sharing technique is utilized to balance the load power among them. The detailed analysis for modeling and control of the proposed structure is presented. The validity and performance of the proposed topology is verified by simulation and experimental results.
Smart transformers are effective at reducing the weight and increasing the efficiency of traction systems for railroad applications. A smart transformer generally consists of rectifier modules and the Dual-Active-Bridge (DAB) converter modules. The efficiency of the smart transformer depends on not only the electrical characteristics, but also on the control method of the converter modules. Especially, a DAB converter has a high order degree of freedom of voltage modulation to control the power transferred through the high frequency transformer, and a voltage modulation method, are very critical for the efficiency of the DAB converter. This paper proposes a new voltage modulation method for the DAB converter to increase the efficiency in the low/medium power transfer condition. The proposed modulation method controls the reactive power in the high frequency transformer, making it zero. And, the switching loss is dramatically reduced by using the received converter module as a diode rectifier. The feasibility of the proposed modulation method is verified by computer simulation of the 900Vdc DAB converter power control.
