  • Adolescent media addiction has emerged as an important social agenda in Korea. However, there has not been enough discussion on the causal structure of media addiction and policy interventions. The objective of this study is to identify and assess the mechanism of the existing and the revised Shutdown policy based on the systems thinking approach. To achieve this purpose, we establish the relationship between media usage, flow, and addiction, and develop a causal loop diagram. Based on the causal loop diagram, we explore the causal structure of two policy scenarios: shutdown policy and deregulation. Our study suggests that policy interventions inducing direct parental control on children's media usage time are ineffective since the time control reduces children's autonomy, which helps alleviate media addiction. Therefore, this study suggests that policy intervention should focus on alleviating addiction itself rather than on controlling media usage time.

  • This study explored the influence of adolescent depression on adult media addiction by examining Bronfenbrenner's ecological perspective. The ecological perspective is a useful framework to identify the link between youths' interacting subjects in the ecological environment. It can also be used to understand adolescent problems and addiction behaviors. The current study examined the influence of parents, peers, and teachers on adult media addiction and depression with a focus on micro-systems that have the greatest influence on adolescents among various environmental systems. We analyzed 568 participants who reported exposure to adult media. SPSS 20.0 was used to conduct a descriptive analysis of the data; AMOS 19.0 was used to conduct a confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation model. The results of study are as follows. First, parental abuse and peer alienation significantly increases depression. Second, peer communication significantly decreases depression. Third, parental monitoring and parental affection significantly decreased adult media addiction. Fourth, parental abuse, peer alienation, and depression significantly increased adult media addiction. This study is meaningful in that it examines the influence of parent, peer, and teacher relationships among adolescents on adult media addiction and depression. This study can be helpful to understand adult media addiction and depression among Korean adolescents.

  • This study investigated the relationship between preschoolers' smart media usage in regards to cognitive and language development, especially the mediating effect of preschoolers' smart media addiction tendency and the moderated mediating effect of maternal guidance on smart media usage. The study surveyed 273 preschoolers' mothers who lived in Daegu City and Kyungpook Province. The findings of this study were as follows. First, preschoolers' smart media addiction tendency mediated the relationship between smart media usage time in regards to cognitive and language development. Second, maternal active mediation and monitoring moderated the relationship between preschoolers' smart media usage time and smart media addiction tendency. Third, there was a maternal co-use moderated the mediating effect of preschoolers' smart media addiction tendency on language development. In conclusion, preschoolers' smart media addition tendency mediated the effect of smart media usage time on cognitive and language development. Among the mediation pathways, the influence of preschoolers' smart media addiction tendency on language development was moderated by maternal co-use. The findings of this study suggest that maternal guidance should be applied differently depending on preschoolers' smart media addiction tendency. This study examined preschoolers' and maternal smart media-related variables on preschoolers' cognitive and language development in order to provide preliminary data that can be used to explore the maternal guidance on how to use smart media for their preschool children.

  • Objective: This study aimed to examine the mediating effect of mothers' parenting stress on the relationship between their self-differentiation and the tendency of addiction to social media. Methods: The participants in this study were two hundred and eight mothers with children aged 36 months or younger. Data were analyzed statistically using frequency, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Results: The results of the present study are as follows. First, the mothers' self-differentiation was negatively associated with their parenting stress and social media addiction tendency. Second, both the total scores of the mothers' parenting stress and their distress were found to partially mediate the relationship between their self-differentiation and social media addiction tendency. However, the mothers' daily stress did not mediate the relationship between the variables. Conclusion/Implications: The findings of the current study have implications for developing ways of intervening in mothers' social media addiction tendency by reducing their parenting stress, particularly for mothers with low levels of self-differentiation.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effect of parental self-esteem on late school-aged children's media device addiction by mediating marital conflict and children's self-esteem. Methods: This study used data from the 11th (2018) Panel Study on Korean Children. The participants consisted of 1,082 family triads (fathers, mothers, and children). Data were collected using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Marital Conflict Scale, and K-Internet Addiction Scale. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling with SPSS/WIN 27.0 and Mplus 8.7. Results: The final model showed a good fit for the data. Children's media device addiction was directly related to mothers' self-esteem, mothers' marital conflict, and children's self-esteem. Fathers' self-esteem had a significant indirect effect on children's media device addiction by mediating both fathers' and mothers' marital conflict. In addition, mothers' self-esteem had a significant indirect effect on children's media device addiction by mediating mothers' marital conflict. Conclusion: The findings indicates that self-esteem and marital conflict for both fathers and mothers have a significant effect on children's media device addiction. It suggests that more attention might be given to fathers and mothers in developing interventions to prevent children's media device addiction.
