  • This paper examines the emergence of mechanical engineers in the technological and social context of professionalization in England. Despite their technological progress, most steam engine wrights and machine tool builders were individual workshop owners working to order in the early 19th century. In the 1830s and 1840s, however, the railway boom produced so called railway engineers by providing them with some managerial experience as the canal building did in civil engineering. Railway engineers played a dominant role to establish the Institute of Mechanical Engineers(IME) in 1848. It was IME that stated what is a mechanical engineer and helped its members be in the similitude of the civil engineers in social and technological activities.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for taking into account uncertainties based on the projection on polynomial chaos. Due to the manufacturing and assembly errors, uncertainties in material and geometric properties, the system parameters including assembly defect, damping coefficients, bending stiffness and traction-compression stiffness are uncertain. The proposed method is used to determine the dynamic response of a one-stage spur gear system with uncertainty associated to gear system parameters. An analysis of the effect of these parameters on the one stage gear system dynamic behavior is then treated. The simulation results are obtained by the polynomial chaos method for dynamic analysis under uncertainty. The proposed method is an efficient probabilistic tool for uncertainty propagation. The polynomial chaos results are compared with Monte Carlo simulations.

  • Because all areas of mechanical engineering involves the use of mathematics, mechanical engineers need mathematical understanding and skill enhancement. To achieve the effective mathematics education for mechanical undergraduate students, it should reorganize the important subtopics of mathematics. In this paper, we explore the direction of the development of mathematics education for mechanical engineers by analyzing the teaching hours of each topics in the mathematics and by comparing the results with significance analysis of expert survey. To do so, syllabuses of mathematics courses of the selected mechanical engineering departments were analyzed and the survey responses of professionals in the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers were also investigated. Finally, the revision of mathematics curriculum in the mechanical engineering was proposed.

  • In this paper, integration methods for stiff constrained mechanical systems are studied to analyze dynamic response of the stiff mechanical system efficiently. The stiff, non-stiff systems are identified by using eigenvalues of the Jacobian of the systems. To integrate both stiff system and non-stiff system efficiently a new switching method between the non-stiff differential equation solver and the stiff differential equation solver is presented.

  • The advancement of the mechanical properties of metal materials caused by a recent high technology contributes to the stability and productivity of mechanical structures. However, the advanced mechanical properties depends on the conditions of crystal boundaries and the improvement of the texture. Although the tensile strength and a hardness of a steel would be increased by the adding B, it seems to be a marked decreases of the toughness which caused in the weaken workability. This study is concerned with a characteristics of the B compound which will be mixed with $H_3BO_3$ and the metallic magnesium. What affected in the mechanical property and texture is checked by the strength and the texture test. As a result, it is shown that the improvement of the mechanical property and the texture homogeneity. In addition, it seems that a molten metal which is added by the B compound is deoxized and cleansed.

  • In the case of control for mechanical systems, it is highly useful to be able to provide a compact model of the mechanical system to control engineers using the smallest number of state variables, while still providing an accurate model. The reduced mechanical model can then be inserted into the complete system models and used for extended system-level dynamic simulation. In this paper, moment-matching based model order reductions (MOR) using Krylov subspaces, which reduce the number of degrees of freedom of an original finite element model via the Arnoldi process, are presented to study the eigenvalue and frequency response problems of a HDD actuator and suspension system.

  • The Emergence of german mechanical engineer group is related to the development of polytechnical schools which were founded by the german state governments. Following the model of vienna polytechnical schools, the german polytechnical schools aimed also to educate engineers for private industries. For this purpose, the practices and workshop experiences were more emphasized than the theoretical education. With the further industrialization, the demand for higher educated engineers grew, and the level of theories taught in the polytechnical schools approached to that of university. On the base of mathematicalization of technical and mechanical knowledge, the professors of polytechnical schools succeeded in the establishment of Technische Hochschule which ranked as university. The german mechanical engineers could differentiate themselves from the traditional technicians with the establishment of polytech schools and Technische Hochschule.

  • The role of the Polytechnician as state engineer in the making of modern engineering science in France has been well known. This article articulates the role of the civilian engineers and the two engineering schools producing those civilian engineers in the making of typically French engineering tradition, particularly in mechanical engineering. The mechanical engineers from Ecoles des Arts et M$\acute{e}$tiers and Ecole Central des Arts et Manufactures played a significant roles in the making of modern engineering sciences through their contributions to the making engineering as a theoretical sciences and to the mediation of the technicians and the managers in mechanical engineering.
