  • The power output behavior of the binary cycle composed of two Carnot cycles is analyzed with considering heat transfer processes, in which the finitely constant temperature differences between heat sources and working fluids exists. The power output has the maximum value as an extremum for cycle temperatures and capacities of heat exchangers. In the internally reversible cycle, the power output is independent of the cycle temperature in the intermediate heat exchanger. In this case when the total capacities of heat exchangers are given, three heat exchangers have the same capacities at the maximum power output condition. In addition, when the cycle is not extremum for cycle temperatures and capacities of heat exchangers. At the maximum power output condition, the capacity of heat exchanger at the cold side is slightly more than the hot side as the cycle effectiveness decreases.

  • The performance of heat exchanger as an energy conversion device can be described by the available energy output and efficiency. The efficiency is defined as the ratio of the available energy output and the exergy of the heat source flow. In present study, a counterflow heat exchanger is analyzed and the conditions to obtain maximum output is numerically determined. As a result, the avilable energy obtained by the cold flow can be determined as functions of the heat capacity flow, the cold flow inlet temperature and the heat transfer capacity of heat exchanger. At the maximum output condition the heat capacity flow of the cold fluid is larger than that of the heat source, and the heat capacity flow ratio is equal to the ratio of the cold flow inlet temperature and the atmospheric temperature. And the avilable energy output increases as the heat transfer capacity of the heat exchanger become larger, but in the economic point of view there is also an optimum heat transfer capacity for a given heat source flow.

  • This work presents a high efficiency phase shifted full bridge (PSFB) DC-DC converter for use in the second stage of a battery charger for neighborhood electrical vehicle (EV) applications. In the design of the converter, Lithium-ion battery cells are preferred due to their high voltage and current rates, which provide a high power density. This requires wide range output voltage regulation for PSFB converter operation. In addition, the battery charger works with a light load when the battery charge voltage reaches its maximum value. The soft switching of the PSFB converter depends on the dead time optimization and load condition. As a result, the converter has to work with soft switching at a wide range output voltage and under light conditions to reach high efficiency. The operation principles of the PSFB converter for the continuous current mode (CCM) and the discontinuous current mode (DCM) are defined. The performance of the PSFB converter is analyzed in detail based on wide range output voltage and load conditions in terms of high efficiency. In order to validate performance analysis, a prototype is built with 42-54 V / 15 A output values at a 200 kHz switching frequency. The measured maximum efficiency values are obtained as 94.4% and 76.6% at full and at 2% load conditions, respectively.

  • A low temperature difference model Stirling engine is a small Stirling engine running with several degree of temperature difference without power output. In this study, the design parameters to give maximum power are discussed. As results, the phase angle is about 100 degree, and compression ratio is 1.5% of the ratio of heat source temperatures at maximum power condition.

  • Solar cell generate DC power from sunlight whose power is different at any instance according to condition of variables : insolation and temperature. In order to improve the system utility factor and efficiency of energy conversion, it is desirable to operate the PV system at maximum power point of solar cell under different condition. In this paper, Boost chopper is controlled it output voltage with a new discrete control algorithm for MPPT. PWM signal of DC-DC converter are generated with a 89C51 microcontroller. Switching frequency of DC-DC converter is set at 10KHz. Simulation and experimental results show that the PV system studied in this paper is always operated at maximum power point under different maximum power point of solar cells having stabilized output voltage waveform with relatively small ripple component

  • Novel unified criterion to optimize power coupling at optical directional couplers with discontinuous input/output interfaces is first defined and evaluated numerically. The numerical results reveal that maximum power transfer between guiding slabs without discontinuous interfaces is dominated by conventional phase-matching condition while the guiding structures with discontinuous interfaces has maximum power transfer at an equi-partition condition, which describes the power distribution condition between two rigorous modes propagating through optical couplers.

  • The output power efficiency of the fuel cell system depends on the demanded current, stack temperature, air excess ratio, hydrogen excess ratio and inlet air humidity. Thus, it is necessary to determine the optimal operation condition for maximum power efficiency. In this paper, we developed a dynamic model of fuel cell system which contains mass flow model, diffusivity gas layer model, membrane hydration and electrochemistry model. In order to determine the maximum output power and minimum use of hydrogen in a certain power condition, response surface methodology (RSM) optimization based on the proposed PEMFC stack model is presented. The results provide an effective method to optimize the operation condition under varied situations.

  • Under partial shading condition, the multiple local maxima can be existed on the output characteristics of PV array. In case of the conventional MPPTs (i.e P&O or IncCond), the failure of maximum power point tracking could be occurred under partial shading condition(PSC). The problems are deduced by the analysis of conventional MPPTs. In this paper, a real maximum power point tracking for PV array under partially shaded condition is proposed. And proposed MPPT is analyzed by case study. It is confirmed by simulation results that the proposed MPPT can track the real MPP under partial shading condition.

  • For the refrigeration system using the reversed Carnot cycle, maximum conditions of effectiveness and available energy output are studied with taking into account of the heat transfer between heat sources and the cycle, and of the heat loss due to heat leakage into the cold heat source. The extremum of the effectiveness exists for variables T$_{l}$ and T$_{L}$. Therefore the desirable results in engineering applications that available energy output is not zero under maximum condition of the effectiveness are obtained. In addition, the extremum of the available energy output does not exist for the variable T$_{l}$ but does for the variable T$_{L}$. As the heat loss increases, the available energy output and the effectiveness decrease, the regions of T$_{l}$ and T$_{L}$ where the refrigeration system is possible to operate become smaller.aller.

  • Process capability is well known in quality control literatures. Process capability refers to the uniformity of the process. Obviously, the variability in the process is a measure of the uniformity of output. It is customary to take the 6-sigma spread in the distribution of the product quality characteristic as a measure of process capability. However there is no reference of process capability when maximum material condition is applied to datum and position tolerance in GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing). If there is no material condition in datum and position tolerance, process capability can be calculated as usual. If there is a material condition in a feature control frame, bonus tolerance is permissible. Bonus tolerance is an additional tolerance for a geometric control. Whenever a geometric tolerance is applied to a feature of size, and it contains an maximum material condition (or least material condition) modifier in the tolerance portion of the feature control frame, a bonus tolerance is permissible. When the maximum material condition modifier is used in the tolerance portion of the feature control frame, it means that the stated tolerance applies when the feature of size is at its maximum material condition. When actual mating size of the feature of size departs from maximum material condition (towards least material condition), an increase in the stated tolerance-equal to the amount of the departure-is permitted. This increase, or extra tolerance, is called the bonus tolerance. Another type of bonus tolerance is datum shift. Datum shift is similar to bonus tolerance. Like bonus tolerance, datum shift is an additional tolerance that is available under certain conditions. Therefore we try to propose how to calculate process capability index of position tolerance when maximum material condition is applied to datum and position tolerance.
