  • The purpose of this research is to promote the academic achievement motivation and improve problem solving ability in Mathematics. In addition I hope to explore a new teaching method and facilitate students interest in mathmatics. If the teachers utilize an Internet Web Page and exchang information, the interaction activities will allow them to collect and analyse a variety of data. As this teaching method assists students motivation to get the effects of self-regulated learning strategies of students using the internet and their academic achievements and learning attitudes can be explored. The information will be gathered after the students participate in classes which were taught through the Edunet Homepage and the Department of Mathematics Homepage of KongJu National University. The Internet pages focused on the "Function" chapter of the first grade text for students attending middle school. The students were divided into two groups, experimental and comparative. Each group is composed of three levels, high, middle, and low. In the post experimental phase, two tests were administered which measured achievement ability and the learning attitude of the students. The results of the tests were then compared and analyzed. The results were as follows: First, the study demonstrated that self-regulated Learning Starategies towards Academic Achievements and Learning Attitudes were more effective than traditional teaching methods. These methods were significantly effective in the middle level and low level groups. The study demonstrated little to no improvement in the high level groups

  • The purpose of this thesis was to improve the plans and methods of teaching and learning activities and contribute to developing teachers` quality and reeducating them by investigating teachers' attitudes toward teaching and learning have a significant effect on the students' attitudes toward mathematics and the students' ability development at mathematics. The inventory was composed of 56 items : three main areas and eight sub-areas. Added seven background factors were sex, by whom was established (is it a public or nongovernmental \ulcorner), teaching career, age, what kind of school (is it general or vacational high school or middle school\ulcorner), region, college. For this analysis of materials used SAS program. And analysis of variance was applied on the seven background factors. All subjects in this study were 341 secondary school mathematics teachers in pusan city and Kyungsangnam-do were surveyed by the questionnaire of Likert type to which the respondents' seven background elements were added. Main results this study were as follows : 1. The overall attitude of the measured secondary school mathematics teachers tends to be positive but a little indifferent. Also attitude toward the students was a little more positive than the other attitudes. 2. There were significant differences (1%) among the sub-level areas except three of them. (r = 0.17~0.60) 3. There were significant differences (5%) by the result of Multiple comparison test among the schools in learning and teaching. So the teachers working at middle schools and general high schools were more positive than those working at vocational high schools. 4. The result of comparison among region was that teachers working in towns and cities were more positive than those working in the country. But there was no significant difference between the teachers working in large cities and those working in other region. 5. There was no significant difference in the overall attitudes toward teaching and learnig among the sex, by whom was established(is it public or nongovernmental\ulcorner), teaching career, age, college. The study left much deficiency to be desired and has to be followed by a continuing study to make it better. For the following study, it is necessary to examine the validity and reliability of the measuring tools more thoroughly and investigate the attitudes with sufficient samples all over the country.

  • This study is focused on vocational high school students who feel hardly interested in mathematics and are considered to have very limited basic scholastic ability. It analyzes the data obtained by applying the material, extracted from the Internet and literature to school classes from March to July, for the purposes of improving the degree of scholastic achievement on the basis of the fact that interest induced learning materials were developed and applied to the students to bring about their motivation resulting in a positive change in understanding and attitudes to mathematics. According to the result of the analysis, the level of students' scholastic ability of both the comparative class and the experimental class were too low to become interested in mathematics. However, the experimental class students seemed to feel familiar to the learning materials rather than reluctant, and it appeared that their interest and behavior of learning began to change gradually in an extent. In addition to that, as an aspect of scholastic achievement there was not considerable difference between the two classes, but as time went, some valuable changes were found. Unfortunately, the size of group of the research was small and the period of the experimental classes was not extensively long, and therefore the same result might not occur in other groups. However, it is believed that in class-time, educating students by putting in learning materials bringing about relevant motivation to the class, will lead them to become interested in mathematics, and change their attitudes and understanding of mathematics. After all, scholastic achievement will be effective.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze mathematical errors and the effects of reflective problem posing activities on students' mathematical problem solving abilities and attitudes toward mathematics. We chose two 5th grade groups (experimental and control groups) to conduct this research. From the results of this study, we obtained the following conclusions. First, reflective problem posing activities are effective in improving students' problem solving abilities. Students could use extended capability of selecting a condition to address the problem to others in the activities. Second, reflective problem posing activities can improve students' mathematical willpower and promotes reflective thinking. Reflective problem posing activities were conducted before and after the six areas of mathematics. Also, we examined students' mathematical attitudes of both the experimental group and the control group about self-confidence, flexibility, willpower, curiosity, mathematical reflection, and mathematical value. In the reflective problem posing group, students showed self check on their problems solving activities and participated in mathematical discussions to communicate with others while participating mathematical problem posing activities. We suggested that reflective problem posing activities should be included in the development of mathematics curriculum and textbooks.

  • In this study, we created, implemented, and evaluated the impact of proportional reasoning authentic investigative activities on the mathematical content and pedagogical knowledge and attitudes of pre-service elementary and middle school mathematics teachers. For this purpose, a special teaching model was developed, implemented, and tested as part of the pre-service mathematics teacher training programs conducted in Israeli teacher colleges. The model was developed following pilot studies investigating the change in mathematical and pedagogical knowledge of pre- and in-service mathematics teachers, due to experience in authentic proportional reasoning activities. The conclusion of the study is that application of the model, through which the pre-service teachers gain experience and are exposed to authentic proportional reasoning activities with incorporation of theory (reading and analyzing relevant research reports) and practice, leads to a significant positive change in the pre-service teachers' mathematical content and pedagogical knowledge. In addition, improvement occurred in their attitudes and beliefs towards learning and teaching mathematics in general, and ratio and proportion in particular.
