  • A nonlinear gas-spring tuned mass damper is proposed to mitigate the seismic responses of the multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) structure, in which the nine-story benchmark model is selected as the controlled object. The nonlinear mechanical properties of the gas-spring are investigated through theoretical analysis and experiments, and the damper's control parameters are designed. The control performance and damping mechanism of the proposed damper attached to the MDOF structure are systematically studied, and its reliability is also explored by parameter sensitivity analysis. The results illustrate that the nonlinear gas-spring TMD can transfer the primary structure's vibration energy from the lower to the higher modes, and consume energy through its own relative movement. The proposed damper has excellent "Reconciling Control Performance", which not only has a comparable control effect as the linear TMD, but also has certain advantages in working stroke. Furthermore, the control parameters of the gas-spring TMD can be determined according to the external excitation amplitude and the gas-spring's initial volume.

  • Corrugation of railway track can be caused by the various dynamic behavior of travelling wheels and track. In this paper, the coupled vibrations of travelling wheel and railway track are analyzed as the cause of corrugations. To analyze the coupled vibrations, the track supported by the sleepers and the traveling wheel are identified to the elastically supported infinite beam and the spring-mass system which runs at constant speed. The Hertzian contact spring is considered betwen the infinite beam and spring-mass system. The dynamic responses of elastically supported infinite beam and spring-mass system are calculated. The cause and development of rail corrugation are discussed in the view point of contact force fluctuation affected by the elastic supports and the corrugated surface profile of the track. By the obtained results, the possibilities of resonance are checked between the excitation by the corrugated surface profile and the natural frequency of contact spring-moving mass system. It may be thought to a development of railway corrugation.

  • SBN (Structure-Borne Noise) reduction in resiliently mounted machineries are predicted by using mass-spring model and wave model. In mass-spring model, mount is modeled as a spring, while in wave model, mount is considered as an equivalent elastic rod for taking account into longitudinal wave propagation. The predictions for SBN reduction through mounts are compared to the measurements for four different pumps. It is found that the mass-spring model is valid only in low frequency range below few hundred Hz, while for high frequency ranges longitudinal wave propagation in the mount must be considered to explain the measurements. It is also shown that impedance of the floor slightly affects low frequency behaviour in mass-spring and wave model below 50 Hz - 80 Hz, so that in engineering practice the effect of floor impedance may be neglected in computing mount performance.

  • Since the performance of the spring operating mechanism for a circuit breaker mainly depends on the dynamic behavior and mass of the coil spring, its dynamic analysis is required to evaluate the performance of the spring operating mechanism. In this study, a coil spring design program is developed for the spring operating mechanism. An experimental approach is used to find the variables satisfying the design constraints' requirements. The coil spring is formed by using a lumped mass spring model. This program offers reference data for the design of coil springs and for the spring operating mechanism.

  • Dynamic responses of a simply supported beam with a translational spring carrying a moving mass are studied. Governing equations of motion including all the inertia effects of a moving mass are derived by employing the Galerkin's mode summation method, and solved by using the Runge-Kutta integral method. Numerical solutions for dynamic responses of a beam are obtained for various cases by changing parameters of the spring stiffness, the spring position, the mass ratio and the velocity ratio of a moving mass. Some experiments are conducted to verify the numerical results obtained. Experimental results for the dynamic responses of the test beam have a good agreement with numerical ones.

  • It is known that the heat and mass transfer characteristics in the absorber are most sensitive of the temperature boost of all the heat exchangers and the development of a more efficient absorber should be highly important. This paper describes absorption experiments made with different inside tube diameters, tube length and tube shapes. The purpose of this study is to acquire basic knowledge about heat and mass transfer in a falling film type absorber with vertical inner tubes. Heat and mass transfer were measured for water vapor absorption into a Lithium Bromide-water solution flowing down an absorber of vertical inner tubes. As a result, insert spring tube compares bare tube and heat transfer improved by order of insert spring tube P2(pitch 20 mm) and P1(pitch 10 mm).

  • The goal of this paper is to determine the eigenvalues of a uniform rectangular plate carrying any number of spring-damper-mass systems using an analytical-and-numerical-combined method (ANCM). To this end, a technique was presented to replace each "spring-damper-mass" system by a massless equivalent "spring-damper" system with the specified effective spring constant and effective damping coefficient. Then, the mode superposition approach was used to transform the partial differential equation of motion into the matrix equation, and the eigenvalues of the complete system were determined from the associated characteristic equation. To verify the reliability of the presented theory, all numerical results obtained from the ANCM were compared with those obtained from the conventional finite element method (FEM) and good agreement was achieved. Since the order of the property matrices for the equation of motion obtained from the ANCM is much lower than that obtained from the FEM, the CPU time required by the ANCM is much less than that by the FEM.

  • This study suggests a dynamic design process for deciding properly design parameters of a mass-spring type Wave Energy Converter (WEC) to achieve sufficient energy conversion from wave to power generator. The WEC mechanism, in this research, consists of a rigid sprung body, a platform, suspension springs and dampers. The rigid sprung body is supported on the platform via springs and dampers and vibrates translationally in the heave direction under wave excitation. At last the resulting heave motion of the sprung body is transmitted to rotating motion of the electric generator by rack and pinion, and transmission gears. For the purpose of vibration analysis, the WEC mechanism has been simply modelled as a mass-spring-damper system under harmonic base excitation. Its maximum displacement transmissibility and steady state response can be determined by using elementary vibration theory if the harmonic ocean wave data were provided. With the vibration analysis results, the suggested dynamic design process of WEC can determine all the design parameters of the WEC mechanism, such as sprung body mass, suspension spring constant, and damping coefficient that can give sufficient relative displacement transmissibility and the associated inertia moment to drive the electric generator and transmission gears.

  • This paper investigates the free vibration analysis of double-beam system coupled by a two-degree-of-freedom mass-spring system. In order to generalize the model, the main beams are assumed to be elastically restrained against translation and rotation at one end and free at the other. Furthermore, the mass-spring system is elastically connected to the beams at adjustable positions by means of four translational and rotational springs. The governing differential equations of the beams and the mass-spring system are derived and analytically solved by using the Fourier transform method. Moreover, as a second way, a finite element solution is derived. The frequency parameters and mode shapes of some diverse cases are obtained using both methods. Comparison of obtained results by two methods shows the accuracy of both solutions. The influence of system parameters on the free vibration response of the studied mechanical system is examined.
