This study offers a Monte Carlo alternative for computing mass energy absorption coefficients of any material through calculation of photon energy deposited per mass of the sample and the energy flux obtained inside a sample volume. This approach is applied in this study to evaluate mass energy absorption coefficients of some amino acids found in human body at twenty-eight different photon energies between 10 keV and 20 MeV. The simulations involved a pencil beam source modeled to emit a parallel beam of mono-energetic photons toward a 1 mean free path thick sample of rectangular parallelepiped geometry. All the components in the problem geometry were surrounded by a 100 cm vacuum sphere to avoid any interactions in materials other than the absorber itself. The results computed using the Monte Carlo radiation transport packages MCNP6.2 and GAMOS5.1 were checked against the theoretical values available from the tables of XMUDAT database. These comparisons indicate very good agreement and support the conclusion that Monte Carlo technique utilized in this fashion may be used as a computational tool for determining the mass energy absorption coefficients of any material whose data are not available in the literature.
The improvement of energy conservation is mandatory to decrease consumption of fossil fuels and to minimize negative impacts on the environment which originates from large cooling and heating demand. The absorption heat pump technology has a large potential for energy-saving in this respect. Absorption heat pump is a means to upgrade waste heat without the addition of extra thermal energy. The higher performance of absorber is of great importance for absorption heat pump cycle. In this study, in order to improve the performance of absorber, the absorber of tangential feed of a liquid phase with spiral tube has been investigated using methanol-glycerine as a working fluid. The spiral tube and tangential feeding generate the turbulence into the liquid flow while increasing the mass and heat transfer coefficients. The simultaneous heat and mass transfer were found to take place in a liquid turbulent film in the absorber with the spiral tube during the process of gas absorption. By calculating mass and heat transfer coefficients by measurement of the concentration and the temperature of each position in the absorber, the entrance was found to be more effective in enhancing mass and heat transfer.
This paper presents as assessment based on steady-state thermodynamic analysis and computer modeling of a double effect generation absorption heating cycle for solar air-conditioning to find operating temperature ranges. The influences of component temperatures on the heating coefficients of performance and mass flow ratio have been investigated to obtain optimum operating conditions for the proposed air conditioning system. And the single and double effect absorption cycles are compared with each other over the same range of temperatures.
The study of $CO_2$ absorption in a packed column by 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine (TMG) dissolved in ethylene glycol is presented. Absorption column of inner diameter 1 in and 0.6 m length was filled with Protruded-packing $0.16in{\times}0.16in$. We investigated the effect of operating conditions on overall mass transfer coefficients as well as on $CO_2$ removal efficiency. The loading values reached at about $1.0mol_{CO2}/mol_{TMG}$. In case of absorbent with lean $CO_2$ loading, the overall mass transfer coefficient was proportional to the concentration of TMG. However, in the range of more than ${\alpha}=0.5molCO_2/molTMG$, the overall mass transfer coefficients decreased with the concentration of TMG. It is due to the increasing of mass transfer resistance in liquid phase as increasing of viscosity at higher loading values.
In this paper, a thermodynamic analysis was performed to provide design data for a double-effect absorption heating system with water-LiBr-LiSCN mixture which utilizes solar energy as evaporator heat source. In addition, a comparative study of the water-LiBr-LiSCN mixture against the water-LiBr pair was conducted by a computer simulation. The computer simulation is based on mass, material and heat balance equations for each part of the system. Coefficients of performance and flow ratios for effects of different operating temperatures are investigated. It is found that the heating COP is higher for the water-LiBr-LiSCN mixture than for the water-LiBr pair, and FR is lower for the former.
In this paper, thermodynamic design data for heating of double-effect absorption system using LiCl-water for evaporator heating source of sofar energy are investigated for the water-LiCl pair and a comparative study of the water-LiCl pair with the water-LiBr pair is given used for the computer simulation. The computer simulation is based on mass, material and heat balance equations for each part of the system. Coefficients of performance and flow ratios for effects of different operating temperatures are investigated. It is found that the heating COP is higher for the water -LiCl pair than for the water-LiBr pair, and FR is lower for the water-LiCl pair than for the water LiBr pair.
This study aims to determine the effect of fly ash with a high replacing ratio of clay on the radiation shielding properties of bricks. Some interaction parameters (mass attenuation coefficients, half value layer, effective atomic number, effective electron density, and absorption efficiency) of clay fly ash bricks were measured with a NaI(Tl) detector at 661.6 keV, 1,173.2 keV, and 1,332.5 keV. For the investigation of their shielding behavior, fly ash bricks were molded using an admixture to clay. A narrow beam transmission geometry condition was used for the measurements. The measured values of these parameters were found in good agreement with the theoretical calculations. The elemental compositions of the clay fly ash bricks were analyzed by using an energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. At selected energies the values of the effective atomic numbers and effective electron densities showed a very modest variation with the composition of the fly ash. This seems to be due to the similarity of their elemental compositions. The obtained results were also compared with concrete, in order to study the effect of fly ash content on the radiation shielding properties of clay fly ash bricks. The clay fly ash bricks showed good shielding properties for moderate energy gamma rays. Therefore, these bricks are feasible and eco-friendly compared with traditional clay bricks used for construction.

The mass attenuation coefficients (${\mu}/{\rho}$) of food waste samples (pomegranate peel, acorn cap, lemon peel, mandarin peel, pumpkin peel, grape peel, orange peel, pineapple peel, acorn peel and grape stalk) have been measured employing a Si(Li) detector at 13.92, 17.75, 20.78, 26.34 and 59.54 keV. Also, the theoretical values of the mass attenuation coefficients have been evaluated utilizing mixture rule from WinXCOM program. The results showed that the lemon peel has the highest values of ${\mu}/{\rho}$ among the selected samples. From the obtained mass attenuation coefficients, we determined some absorption parameters such as effective atomic number ($Z_{eff}$), electron density ($N_E$) and molar extinction coefficient (${\varepsilon}$). It was found that the $Z_{eff}$ values of all food wastes lie within the range of 4.034-7.595, whereas the $N_E$ of the studied food wastes was found to be in the range of $0.301-1.720{\times}10^{25}$ (electrons/g) for present energy region.

In this study, real-time absorption coefficients of carbonaceous species in $PM_{2.5}$ was observed using a dual-spot 7-wavelength Aethalometer between November 1, 2016 and December 31, 2017 at an urban site of Gwangju. In addition, 24-hr integrated $PM_{2.5}$ samples were simultaneously collected at the same site and analyzed for organic carbon and elemental carbon (OC and EC) using the thermal-optical transmittance protocol. A main objective of this study was to estimate mass absorption cross section (MAC) values of black carbon (BC) particles at the study site using the linear regression between aethalometer-based absorption coefficient and filter-based EC concentration. BC particles observed at 880 nm is mainly emitted from combustion of fossil fuels, and their concentration is typically reported as equivalent BC concentration (eBC). eBC concentration calculated using MAC value of $7.77m^2/g$ at wavelength of 880 nm, which was proposed by a manufacturer, ranged from 0.3 to $7.4{\mu}g/m^3$ with an average value of $1.9{\pm}1.2{\mu}g/m^3$, accounting for 7.3% (1.5~20.9%) of $PM_{2.5}$. The relationship between aerosol absorption coefficients at 880 nm and EC concentrations provided BC MAC value of $15.2m^2/g$, ranging from 11.4 to $16.2m^2/g$. The eBC concentrations calculated using the estimated MAC of $15.2m^2/g$ were significantly lower than those reported originally from aethalometer, and ranged from 0.2 to $3.8{\mu}g/m^3$, with an average of $1.0{\pm}0.6{\mu}g/m^3$, accounting for 3.7% of $PM_{2.5}$ (0.8~10.7%). Result from this study suggests that if the MAC value recommended by the manufacturer is applied to calculate the equivalent BC concentration and radiative forcing due to BC absorption, they would result in significant errors, implying investigation of an unique MAC value of BC particles at a study site.
