  • Engine builders have separately developed and applied torsional, axial and structural vibration monitoring system on most marine engines. These systems displayed their results for engine or ship operation engineers and were not regularly stored at the hardware of computer. So, the history and trend of various engine and hull vibrations were not supported for preventive maintenance and to protect the failure of these activity or function. The integrated vibration or stress monitoring system(EVAMOS : engine vibration analysis and monitoring system) in marine diesel engine, its accessories and hull structure have been developed by the dynamics laboratory of Mokpo Maritime University during last 3 years. This paper introduces the design conception and ability of commercial software EVAMOS with field data on several actual tests.

  • International Maritime Organization (IMO) proposed the Energy Efficiency Operation Indicator (EEOI) in 2005 and the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) in 2008 so as to address emission concern and regulation. Likewise, Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) monitoring and management are also becoming an issue lately. This paper introduces the energy efficiency design index (operation indicator) monitoring system (EDiMS) software can continuously monitor $CO_2$, $NO_x$, $SO_x$, and PM values emitted from ship. The accurate inventory of ships GHG can be obtained from base of emission result during the engine shop test trial and the actual monitoring of shaft power and ship speed. In addition, the ability to store all exhaust emission and engine operation data can be applied as the useful tool of the inventory work of air pollution and ship energy management plan for the mitigation or reduction of ship emissions.

  • The rapid water pollution in stream, river, lake and sea in recent years raises an urgent need for continuous monitoring and policymaking to conserve the global clean environment. In particular, the increasing water pollution in coastal marine areas adds to the importance of the environmental monitoring systems. In this paper, the mobile server is designed to gathers information of the water quality at coastal areas. The obtained data by the server is transmitted from field servers to the base station via multi-hop communication in wireless sensor network. The information collected includes dissolved oxygen(DO), hydrogen ion exponent(pH), temperature, etc. By the information provided the real-time monitoring of water quality at the coastal marine area. In addition, wireless sensor network-based flooding routing protocol was designed and used to transfer the measured water quality information efficiently. Telosb sensor node is programmed using nesC language in TinyOS platform for small scale wireless sensor network monitoring from a remote server.

  • We investigated the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) in all 13 locations of Masan Bay from February to November in 2015. The COD and TOC contents were high during the June-August period when the pollution load increased. In particular, the concentrations of COD and TOC were about twice as high in the surface water as in the bottom water. In spatial distribution, the COD and TOC concentrations at the inner bay were about twice as high as those of the outer bay in Masan Bay. As a result of estimating the oxidation efficiency of COD from the surface layer of Masan Bay in 2015 based on the theoretical oxygen demand (TOD), it was at the level of about 23%. Due to the low oxidation efficiency of COD, there is a risk that the organic matter in Masan Bay will be somewhat underestimated. Therefore, for quantitative analysis of organic matter, COD and TOC analyses need to be combined.

  • A pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera-based monitoring system for efficient monitoring in the engine room of a vessel was designed. A number of places exist where traditional analog instruments are still used in vessel engine rooms, and blind spots closely related to safety exist, for which flooding or fire is a concern. A camera-based monitoring system that guarantees a wide range at a relatively fast cycle for these monitoring points can be an effective alternative to enhance the safety of a vessel. Therefore, a multiview monitoring system is proposed in which the functions of the existing PTZ camera are further strengthened using a software. The monitoring system comprises four modules: camera control, location registration, traversal control, and multiview image reconstruction. The effectiveness of the method was evaluated through a series of experiments in an engine room environment.

  • The importance of total management for maritime structures (Ports, Piers, docks. marine bridges, marine roads, submarine pipelines, etc.) is more and more increasing in these days. Especially, in spite of the marine structures are exposed at the various corrosion circumstances, there are not only a standard of Cathodic Protection System but also knowledge of importance for necessity of corrosion monitoring. Therefore, this paper presents the results of development for the Remote Real-Time Corrosion Monitoring and Control System Using by TRS on Maritime Metallic Structures which can be prevents a big accident by corrosion.

  • Diesel engines have been widely used in ships and power plants because of its higher thermal efficiency, mobility and durability compared to other prime movers. Though these merits, diesel engine including main components are sometimes vibrated due to higher combustion pressure in cylinders. Especially torsional, axial and structural vibrations in propulsion shafting may be severely manifested by the malfunction of torsional and axial dampers and misfiring and unbalanced load in cylinder. The structural vibration of main body and turbocharger core hole are also occurred by the loosen top bracing and excess wear-out or failure of turbocharger's bearings. The marine diesel engine should be safely designed from these vibrations. This paper introduces experimental methods to develop the prototype of integrated vibration monitoring system for marine diesel engine.

  • A wave buoy commonly used for measurements in marine environments is very useful for measurements on the sea surface wind and waves. However, it is constantly exposed to external forces such as typhoons and the risk of accidents caused by ships. Therefore, the installation and maintenance charges are large and constant. In this study, we developed a system for monitoring the sea surface wind using marine radar to provide spatial and temporal information about sea surface waves at a small cost. The essential technology required for this system is radar signal processing. This paper also describes the analytical process of using it for monitoring the sea surface wind. Consequently, developing this system will make it possible to replace wave buoys in the near future.

  • This paper proposes a marine engine state monitoring system using a DPQ (Distributed Precedence Queue) mechanism which collects the state of bearings, temperature and pressure of engine through the CAN network. The CAN is developed by Bosch Corp. in the early 1980' for automobile network. The data from various sensors attached in the marine engine are converted to digital by the analog to digital converter and formatted to fit the CAN protocol at the CAN module. All the CAN modules are connected to the SPU (Signal Processing Unit) module for the efficient communication and processing. This design reduces the cost for wiring and improves the data transmission reliability by recognizing the sensor errors and data transmission errors. The DPQ mechanism is newly developed for the performance improvement of the marine engine system, which is demonstrated through the experiments.
