  • This study aims to explore self-directed learning strategies of high academic achievers majoring in engineering. The research participants were 21 fourth-year students who had attained the first or second highest cumulative grade point average in each department during the past three-year and were asked to write an essay on "my successful learning methods or techniques." The essays were analyzed by theme analysis method which is one of the qualitative methods to extract the self-directed learning strategies used by high performing students. According to the results of this study, the self-directed learning strategies of excellent students could be categorized into fundamental strategies to induce self-directed learning, preparatory strategies, implementation strategies and management strategies for marinating self-directed learning. Detail information on each category is as follow: 1) fundamental strategies refer to positive and pleasant mind, academic confidence and effort attribution, 2) preparatory strategies refer to concrete and challenging goal setting, establishment of learning strategies adjusted courses characteristics and practical learning planning, 3) implementation strategies refer to intensive learning in class, knowledge exploration, knowledge acquisition, social networking and exhaustive preparation for exams and 4) management strategies refer to time management and learning environment management.

  • To study the characteristic of the weight center control of humans, the tracking control capability of circular and wave motion by weight center movement was conducted by using the force platform. The control performance(the integrated value of the $|Object\;value(X)-Control\;Value(Y)|^{2}$) and control trace record was used to evaluate the individual performance characteristics. The size of the population for this study was 73, which consisted of engineering students, students majoring in taekwondo, students majoring in dance, all of which were in their twenties, and also people in their sixties. The results of this study indicate that the weight center control characteristics of humans can be represented by the evaluation method and values. People who were capable of tracking the object did not stop nor overshot the objective. In addition, habits or training characteristics and aging seemed to influence the performance of the subjects. In the future, development of different objectives for weight center control could be used to determine the severity of the disease of the subject and the effects of the treatment.

  • This study was conducted to collect basic data for establishing a revitalization plan for agricultural machinery departments in technical high schools. A status survey on satisfaction and career plan of students majoring in agricultural machinery in technical highschool was measured. The survey results showed that the selection motivation for technical high school was mainly due to the academic score obtained during middle school, and an academic major for agricultural machinery was mainly based on personal interest and aptitude. About 90% of the students answered as "normal" or "satisfied" to the questions asking satisfaction level for agricultural machinery major and education. For career plan, 68.5% of the students answered as "entrance into academic schools for higher level education" and 31.5% answered as "employment". Most preferred higher level education area was "engineering" (30.8%) and "agricultural machinery" was only 12.6%. Expecting employment area was also automobile or other industrial machinery rather than agricultural machinery.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate high school students in natural science track and engineering major university students' perceptions about the writing and composition education. A total of 318 high school students in natural science track from two high schools in a metropolitan area and 447 university students majoring in engineering from three universities participated in the survey and asked to response their perceived status and needs of writing education for science-engineering track. The survey instrument, developed by Lee et al.(2009), was used for this study. The data was analyzed through the SPSS 18.0 program for Windows for Multiple Response Frequency Analysis, Descriptive Statistics, Independent Samples t-test, and One-way Analysis of Variance. The results indicated that high school students relatively perceived that writing education was less necessary compared to university students. In addition, high school students found writing less difficult than university students do. In related to studying their experience with writing and composition education, almost no high school students have taken writing classes and university students have taken an average of one class. Most university students who took writing classes took basic writing classes that were not programmed for students in Science and Engineering. In the basic survey to revitalize writing and composition education for Science and Engineering students in different majors, the level of writing and composition education required by students in each major was different. Writing was considered most necessary for students majoring in Chemical Engineering, followed by students majoring in Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Engineering. The study of writing and composition education for high school and college should extend to studies on teachers or professors who teach writing, studies on contents and methods of writing education, and studies on the development of writing programs for different majors in university.

  • This paper investigated the influence of foreign words, otherwise known as loan words, on global communication abilities of university students from two non English-speaking countries: Korea and Japan. To survey the understanding and usage of foreign words which are from English language and used frequently in daily conversation, questionnaires were administered to Korean and Japanese university students majoring in engineering who shared similar linguistic backgrounds. The results were analyzed from global communication viewpoint. Based on the results, methods for improving global communication skills in engineering education were proposed.

  • This study aims to apply Arduino and 3D printing technology considered as a key subject in the age of 4th industrial revolution which is a step 1 for customizing and applying the process of production by chemical molding companies producing environment-friendly biodegradable packaging materials to the 3D printing teaching in universities. Step 3 is applied to IoT for Arduino application, and 3D printing technology is also used on the basis of teaching creative integrated human resource. Integration of Arduino with 3D printers is based on the assumption that middle- and high-school students can learn it step by step to higher levels and university students majoring or not majoring in computing science can also have computing skills for solving 3D printing-based problems. For IoT application in this study, the 3D printing technology is applied to the external shape of products for producing an Arduino-based lighting fixture. The applied 3D printing technology is further extended to teaching modeling of producing packaging materials by chemical product molding companies in the age of 4th industrial revolution.

  • This study examined understanding and attitude of sustainable development(SD) of 38 college students in a nuclear power plant construction after education for sustainable development(ESD) through panel discussion. The results were as follows: First, after lesson 66% of students were expected that SD is possible if scientific technology is developed and a frugal life for the protection of environment is carried out. However, the remaining students regarded SD as an ideal concept, because they thought it is not possible to pursue environmental sustainability and socio-economic development simultaneously. Second, students' opinions in the evaluation of constructing a nuclear power plant in three aspects(environment, society and economy) before and after panel discussion were changed as follows; 1) After panel discussion, the objectors increased to 21% in economic evaluation, while the supporters increased to 11% in environmental evaluation. 2) Students majoring in engineering or natural sciences changed their opinions to agree in environmental evaluation because they considered a nuclear power plant safe and eco-energy. However students majoring in social science/business or liberal arts/arts changed their opinions to disagree in economic evaluation because they considered a nuclear power plant as high-cost energy when assessing danger-accidents cost, public consensus cost, operation and maintenance cost, and waste disposal cost. 3) This change of decision-making in students majoring in social science/business or liberal arts/arts after panel discussion was statistically significant(p<0.05). Implications of panel discussion as a teaching and learning method in ESD are also discussed.

  • This paper was designed to identify influencing factors and to develop indices for measuring information and communication technology related ethics behaviors of college students majoring in information and communication engineering. Data collected from 288 students surveyed in Busan and Kyungnam area were used and the average of information and communication engineering ethics were below the mid-points meaning 'fairly ethical'. 'Passively violating behavior' showed the highest value (2.77 out of 5) while 'rudeness and insulting behavior' showed the lowest (1.65 out of 5). Second, variables of gender, age, religion, idealism, and relativism were revealed to be meaningful ones. Results can help educators understand the influencing factors in information and communication technology related ethics behaviors of college students as well as develop topics in educating engineering ethics.
