To investigate current status of the elderly meal service program, community centers nationwide were surveyed for congregate meal services. The survey was conducted during the month of December 2002 by mail using self-developed questionnaire on administration, staffs, funding, and meal service management. Only 95 out of 356 community centers (27%) answered and returned the questionnaires, and congregate meal menus were also collected from 20 centers for 492 days. Results were analyzed using SAS package program. In more than half of the elderly congregate meal service programs, following criteria were used in multiple form to allow participation; 65 years old or older, low income, or living alone. All centers served lunch, most of them free of charge, and 88.4% of them provided service 5 days a week. About 79% of the total cost occurred on the congregate meal service was supported by the government. Most of the menus served at congregate meal service were Korean style dish with rice. On the average, each meal provided 3 side dishes including kimchi, in addition to soup or stew. Only 19% of the centers have employed dietitian working for meal service programs; meal menus were prepared by social welfare workers or other non-dietetic personnels in more than 80% of the centers. Food purchasing and food hygiene control was also practiced mainly by social welfare workers or cooks. This study suggests that dietetic professionals are needed to better manage meal service programs for the elderly in both aspects, food hygiene and nutrition. Development of more nutritious menus and determination of appropriate serving sizes for the elderly meal service programs are necessary to meet the RDAs and dietary action guide for the elderly.
Objectives: This study examined the relationship between the personality traits and job performance of Centers for Children's Foodservice Management (CCFSM) staff on emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction. In addition, the characteristics of the center organization were examined to provide practical guidelines for the operation of the center. The aim was to determine management implications with an important meaning in human resource management to enhance the efficiency of the operation of Centers for Children's Foodservice Management (CCFSM). Methods: Out of 207 centers, there were 1,057 employees at 173 centers who agreed to participate in the study, the questionnaire was mailed on February 17, 2017 and collected by mail on March 31, 2017. Finally, 81 centers (46.82%) participated in the survey and 493 questionnaires were used. Results: Neuroticism among the five personality factors had a positive (+) influence on 'cynicism' and 'exhaustion' among the three subordinate factors of emotional exhaustion, negative (-) effects on the 'job' among the six subscales of job satisfaction. In addition, openness showed a negative (-) effect on 'loss of professional confidence' of emotional exhaustion and positive (+) relationship with the 'job' of job satisfaction. Agreeableness appeared to have a negative (-) effect on all factors of emotional exhaustion and a positive (+) influence on all factors of job satisfaction. As a result of analyzing the effects of job performance on emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction, the planning and operations management team showed a positive (+) influence on all factors of emotional exhaustion and negative (-) influence on all factors of job satisfaction. On the other hand, the nutrition management team showed a negative (-) influence on all emotional exhaustion factors and a positive (+) influence on the factors of job satisfaction. The hygiene management team showed a positive (+) relationship with 'Emotional exhaustion' among the subordinate factors of emotional exhaustion and a negative (-) influence on the 'Educational opportunity' of job satisfaction. Conclusions: The personality type and job performance of Centers for Children's foodservice management (ccfsm) staff significantly affected the emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction.
This study was conducted to understand current management status of welfare medical device centers and to suggest complementary point. Method: We surveyed 194 welfare medical device centers through the mail. The survey was done in three domains, i. e. management of service, assuring the health resources, offering the service. Results & Conclusions: According to the result of our study, several problems, which should be improved in the near future, were suggested. That were improving facilities(especially in sanitization of the devices), operating an education or training program for the personnel, and making up for the current management. It was very important for soft landing of long-term care insurance and improving quality of the elderly's life that 'Ministry of Health and Welfare' and 'National Health Insurance corporation' must support welfare medical device centers for discharging their roles
Social welfare facilities where provide the socially disadvantaged with proper social services, face financial difficulties. This is because not only of the lack of governmental support, but also of social welfare facilities' lack of skills in developing abundant resources from the private sector. In this context, this study tried to find factors affecting resource mobilization of the social welfare facilities to devise policies in resource development. Mail survey was conducted with the structured questionnaire. Employees in charge of community resource development were asked to answer the questionnaire. The study population were two types of welfare facilities: community welfare centers and residential care facilities. A total of 293 community welfare centers and 632 residential care facilities responded to the survey. The response rate was about 62%. The dependent variable of the study was the amount of resource mobilization in the year 2001 which was measured as the number of donors, the total amount of donation, and estimated amount of gift-in-kind. Three types models were constructed per each welfare facility. Independent variables were selected based on the previous research findings: community environment factor, structural factor, and resource development factor. Multiple regression was utilized to analyze the data. The resource development factor turned out to be significant variable in various models. In the models of donors, the amount of donation, and the amount of gift-in-kind, at least one out of four variables in the resource development factor was significant. Welfare centers which establish the resource development department or hire employees to take care of resource development, and adopt computer software in managing donors, receive more donations than their counterparts. Interestingly, the centers where employees take the responsibility of resource development as well as other responsibilities (dual duty), did not have more resources mobilized than those with no employees for resource development. Using computer software in managing donors turned out to be a significant variable in many models, except for the donor model. In addition, residential care facilities located in urban area have more donors and donations, and among residential facilities those for the elderly, children, and the mentally retarded and those hiring more employees, receive more donations than those for the disabled and those hiring less employees. As for the gift-in-kind model, the centers located in high income area and residential facilities for the elderly, women and mentally retarded receive less gift-in-kind than those for the disabled. Based on the above findings, this study suggested that to mobilize resources the welfare centers as well residential care facilities need to have community resource development department or resource development staffs, and adopt computer software to systematically organize donors.
The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of organizational climate on the resource linking skills of social workers working in community welfare centers as well as the mediating effects of reflective thinking in these relationships. To test the mediating effects, we set up a research model based on previous studies on the organizational climate, resource linkage skills, and reflective thinking of social workers. The subjects of this study were social workers in community welfare centers in the Busan metropolitan city. Data were collected using mail surveys, and data from 526 respondents were used for the final analysis. The main results are as follows. First, the organizational climate of community welfare centers has a statistically significant impact on social workers' resource linkage skills. In other words, the more the social workers recognize positively about the organizational climate, the more the utilization of resource linkage skills increases. Second, reflective thinking has a mediating effect in the relationship between the organizational climate and resource linkage skills of social workers in community welfare centers. Based on the study results, practical suggestions for improved resource linkage skills and reflective thinking of social workers in community welfare centers were suggested, and practical implications and future research were discussed.
In this paper, we propose a Hangul character recognition method in which new letter components as recognition units are introduced and the MLP (multilayer perceptrons) neural networks are employed for two-step recognition of Hangul. To recognize Hangul character, we divide it into two or three recognition units and extract the direction angle features of them to be fed to the corresponding neural network recognizers. The recognition results of neural network recognizers are combined by another neural network. The experiments were conducted on the Hangul characters from real letter envelopes which are collected in the mail centers in Korea and the results showed that our method performs better than the conventional one.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyze the tasks of managers who were working in the Customized Visiting Health Services (CVHS) and to prioritize analyzed tasks according to performance frequency, perceived importance, and difficulty. Methods: Job analysis method by Hartley (1999) was used for task analysis and performance frequency, perceived importance, and difficulty were used for prioritize as criteria. A total of 85 managers in the CVHS of public health centers nationwide were recruited through e-mail and mail survey. Using SPSS/WIN 15.0, descriptive statistics, such as frequency distribution, means, median, and standard deviation, were conducted to examine each subject's general characteristics, the frequency, importance, and difficulty of the tasks as well as to prioritize the each task. Results: The job description of the managers revealed 12 duties, 35 tasks, and 104 task elements. Of the 85 managers, 84.8% were classified as nurses, 40.5% were home health care specialists, and 32.9% were social workers. Their coretasks were management of client cases, budget management, and management of work performance and quality assurance. Conclusion: Considering the analyzed managers' tasks and core tasks, we need to examine each manager's role precisely and provide various educational programs for improving overall manager competence.

This study provides numerical data on the status of music therapy practices in 54 hospice and palliative care settings in Korea. Two different questionnaires for music therapists and coordinators were sent to 54 coordinators via email, and 47 (87%) hospitals and centers replied by email or post. The survey period was October 30 through December 5, 2014. Music therapists were asked to respond to 65 questionnaire items regarding working conditions, environment, session process, and personal competence. Coordinators were asked to complete 28 questionnaire items regarding the status of music therapy in their perspective setting. Twenty-two (46.8%) hospitals and centers were running music therapy programs with 28 music therapists, and 19 (67.9%) of these music therapists majored in music therapy. There was a significant difference between music therapists (M= 3.43, SD = 0.96) and coordinators (M= 2.73, SD = 0.77) regarding conditions and environment of music therapy sessions (p < .05). The circumstances and conditions for music therapy are inad quate for optimal implementation of music therapy practice. However, the perceived benefits of music therapy by coordinators suggest that music therapists do play an important role in hospice and palliative care. This research provides the first quantitative baseline data of music therapy status in hospice and palliative care settings in Korea.

Objectives: The purpose of this research is to provide foundational data for reeducation concerning prehospital emergency care in order to improve the performance of emergency medical technicians (EMTs) working at 119 fire safety centers. Methods: Data were collected using a mail-in questionnaire developed by researchers from 288 subjects, who were EMTs working at 119 fire safety centers and local units in the Gwangju Metropolitan City and South Jeolla Province, from March 1, 2009 to April 31, 2009. Results: The mean score for EMTs' knowledge on drug intoxication was7.04 out of a total of 10 points. The mean score for EMT's attitude of emergency treatment performance on drug intoxication was 2.96 out of a total of 4 points. The level of EMT's knowledge is relatively high regarding prehospital care for drug intoxication. The EMT's attitude of performances demonstrated an understanding of the patients' conditions. However EMTs did not actively explain the prognosis and medical conditions for their patients. Conclusions: This research will contribute to making plans for reeducating emergency crew working at 119 fire centers so that can they have a more active attitude towards prehospital emergency medical care.

Background: Epidural steroid injection (ESI) is one of the most common procedures for patients presenting low back pain and radiculopathy. However, there is no clear consensus on what constitutes appropriate steroid use for ESIs. To investigate optimal steroid injection methods for ESIs, surveys were sent to all academic pain centers and selected private practices in Korea via e-mail. Methods: Among 173 pain centers which requested the public health insurance reimbursements for their ESIs and were enrolled in the Korean Pain Society, 122 completed questionnaires were returned, for a rate of 70.5%; also returned were surveys from 39 academic programs and 85 private practices with response rates of 83.0% and 65.9%, respectively. Results: More than half (55%) of Korean pain physicians used dexamethasone for ESIs. The minimum interval of subsequent ESIs at the academic institutions (3.1 weeks) and the private practices (2.1 weeks) were statistically different (P = 0.01). Conclusions: Although there was a wide range of variation, there were no significant differences between the academic institutions and the private practices in terms of the types and single doses of steroids for ESIs, the annual dose of steroids, or the limitations of doses in the event of diabetes, with the exception of the minimum interval before the subsequent ESI.
