  • In a log likelihood ratio(LLR) calculation of the detected symbol, multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) system applying an optimal or suboptimal algorithm such as a maximum likelihood(ML) detection, sphere decoding(SD), and QR decomposition with M-algorithm Maximum Likelihood Detection(QRM-MLD) suffers from exponential complexity growth with number of spatial streams and modulation order. In this paper, we propose a LLR calculation method with very low complexity in the QRM-MLD based symbol detector for a high order modulation based $N_T{\times}N_R$ MIMO system. It is able to approach bit error rate(BER) performance of full maximum likelihood detector to within 1 dB. We also analyze the BER performance through computer simulation to verify the validity of the proposed method.

  • Recently, a variety of reduced complexity soft-in soft-output detection algorithms have been introduced for iterative detection and decoding (IDD) systems. However, it is still challenging to implement soft-in soft-output detectors for MIMO systems due to heavy burden in computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a soft detection algorithm for MIMO systems which performs close to the full dimensional joint detection, yet offers significant complexity reduction over the existing detectors. The proposed algorithm, referred to as soft-input soft-output successive group (SSG) detector, detects a subset of symbols (called a symbol group) successively using a deliberately designed preprocessing to suppress the inter-group interference. In fact, the proposed preprocessor mitigates the effect of the interfering symbol groups successively using a priori information of the undetected groups and a posteriori information of the detected groups. Simulation results on realistic MIMO systems demonstrate that the proposed SSG detector achieves considerable complexity reduction over the conventional approaches with negligible performance loss.

  • This paper analyzes the tree expansion for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detection in the viewpoint of hardware implementation. The tree expansion is to calculate path metrics of child nodes performed in every visit to a node while traversing the detection tree. Accordingly, the tree-expansion unit (TEU), which is responsible for such a task, has been an essential component in a MIMO detector. Despite the paramount importance, the analyses on the TEUs in the literature are not thorough enough. Accordingly, we further investigate the hardware complexity of the TEUs to suggest a guideline for selection. In this paper, we focus on a pair of major ways to implement the TEU: 1) a full parallel realization; 2) a transformation of the formulae followed by common subexpression elimination (CSE). For a logical comparison, the numbers of multipliers and adders are first enumerated. To evaluate them in a more practical manner, the TEUs are implemented in a 65-nm CMOS process, and their propagation delays, gate counts, and power consumptions were measured explicitly. Considering the target specification of a MIMO system and the implementation results comprehensively, one can choose which architecture to adopt in realizing a detector.

  • In this paper, a generalized blind adaptive algorithm is introduced for multi-user detection of direct sequence code division multiple access (OS-COMA) wireless communication systems. The main property of the proposed algorithm is its ability to resolve the multipath fading channel resulting in inter symbol interference (ISI) as well as multiple access interference (MAI). Other remarkable properties are its low complexity and mitigation to the near-far problem as well as its insensitivity to asynchronous transmission. The proposed system is based on the minimization of the output energy and convergence to the minimum mean square error (MMSE) detector. It is blind in the sense that it needs no knowledge of the other users' signatures, only the intended user signature and timing are required. Furthermore, the convergence of the minimum output energy (MOE) detector to the MMSE detector is analytically proven in case of M-ary PSK. Depicted results show that the performance of the generalized system dominates those previously considered. Further improvements are obtained when multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technique is employed.

  • In this paper, an efficient algorithm and area-efficient hardware architecture have been proposed for $2{\times}2$ MIMO-OFDM based WLAN baseband modem with two transmit and two receive antennas. To enhance the performance of the receiver, the efficient timing synchronization algorithm and symbol detector based on MML algorithm are presented. Also, by sharing the hardware block with multi-stage pipeline structure and using the complex multiplier based on polar-coordinate, the complexity of the proposed architecture is dramatically decreased. The proposed area-efficient hardware design was designed in hardware description language (HDL) and synthesized to gate-level circuits using 0.13um CMOS standard cell library. As a result, the complexity of the proposed modem receiver is reduced by 56% over the conventional architecture.

  • In this paper we design an irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) code for a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system. The considered MIMO system is minimum mean square error soft-interference cancellation (MMSE-SIC) detector. The MMSE-SIC detector and the LDPC decoder exchange soft information and consist a turbo iterative detection and decoding receiver. Extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts are used to obtain the edge degree distribution of the irregular LDPC code which is optimized for the input-output transfer chart of the MMSE-SIC detector. It is shown that the performance of the designed LDPC code is much better than that of conventional LDPC code optimized for the AWGN channel.

  • This paper studies about reducing the complexity of ML detection in MIMO/V-blast system, based on MMSE and ZF linear detectors. Beforehand, the receiver detects the signal using the linear detector such as ZF or MMSE. Moreover, the next step is to assess whether the signal is reliable or not by verifying the reliability condition, if the latter is reliable then it is the output if not it has to be detected by the advanced detector until the reliability condition is verified.

  • In this paper, we propose a subspace search-based detector (SSD) with low-complexity to achieve near optimal performance for multiple-input multiple-output systems. As an effective solution to reduce the prohibitive computational complexity of the optimal maximum likelihood detector, a partial candidate symbol vector is generated through a partitioned search space but not the entire search space. In addition, based on a partial candidate symbol vector, an ensemble candidate symbol vector generation considering the whole search space is introduced to produce a near optimal solution. As a result, the proposed SSD achieves near-maximum-likelihood performance while having a significantly reduced computational complexity.

  • We propose a scheme which reduce the computational complexity of the lattice reduction (LR) aided detector in MIMO system. The performance of the ML detection algorithm is good but the computational complexity grows exponentially with the number of antenna elements and constellation points. LR aided detector shows the same diversity with the ML scheme with relatively less complexity. But the LR scheme still requires many computations since it involves several iterations of size reduction and column vector exchange. We notice that the LR process depends not on the received signal but only on the channel matrix so we can apply LR process offline and store the results in Look-Up Table (LUT). In this paper we propose an algorithm to generate the LUT which require less memory requirement and we evaluate the performance and complexity of the proposed system. We show that the proposed system requires less computational complexity with similar detection performance compared with the conventional LR aided detector.

  • The BER performance of a MIMO detection scheme on frequency selective Rayleigh fading channels is analytically discussed. The presented MIMO detection scheme consists of temporal and spatial combiners followed by a ZF detector. It is shown that for a MIMO system with $N_T$ transmit antennas, $N_R$ receive antennas, and L resolvable multipath components, it achieves the diversity order of $LN_R-N_T+1$. In frequency selective Rayleigh fading channels, an analytical error rate expression of the systems is also provided and the analytical error performance is compared with the simulated results.
