The Meaning of Death for Korean in View of Novel and End Stage Cancer Patient

  • Every one experiences death one day, however no one can hows exactly what it is because people can not experience death until it comes, it is therefore impossible to judge correctly on the phenomenon of the death. On the whole, man experiences indirect death through the mass communications such as TV drama, fiction, magazine etc because those methods can easily access by every one. In addition to this, people usually acquire the negative awareness of death through the dramatic change of story like dying of cancer for dramatic effect by giving scare and fear to the cancers. The purpose of this study is to provide basic information on the spiritual care that enables the facing death patients to accept death as a part of life and divert hope from scare about after death by comparing and analyzing of two aspects of death meaning i.e, Korean fiction and the end stage cancer patients. Additionally, for medical staff to understand the facing death cancer patients by making to aware patients correctly and provide the better quality of care. The study was performed from September 28, 2002 to February, 28, 2003. The materials of this study were collected by direct data obtained from observation, interviews, note and diary of end stage of cancer patients and written materials acquired from Korean contemporary fiction. Participants of this study were 4 end stage cancer patients including 2 lung cancer patients, 1 liver cancer patient and 1 esophagus cancer patient. The methodology used in this study was divided into two types; Huberman & Miles methodology was used for fiction to find and categorize subject, and Colaizzi, one of phenomenological methodology was used for end stage cancer patients to find the major meaning, subject and categorization. The Eire Risk Assessment in Compressed Natural Gas Buses & Gas Station (CNG 버스 및 충전소의 화재 위험도 평가)

  • The results of the risk assessing on general buses, consisting mainly of diesel-fueled buses, show that the frequency of the instantaneous release is 1.4${\times}$10$^{-3}$ /bus/year, from which the probability of the formation of fireball as a sub event becomes 1.7${\times}$104, and show that the leakage from the CNG-fueled buses is 0.002 event/year. Also, the frequency of gradual release due to a crack is estimated at 3.7${\times}$10$^{-3}$ /buses/year, and a subsequent probability at which this could lead to a jet flame as a sub event is 1.2${\times}$10$^{-3}$ This corresponds to 0.04event/year for the CNG-fueled buses. Dividing all the fired casualties by the running distance of diesel-fueled buses, the risk is 0.091 fire fatalities per 100-million miles. And the total fire risk fur CNG buses is approximately 0.17 per 100-million miles of travel. This means that CNG buses is twice or more dangerous than diesel buses. After all CNG buses are more susceptible to the major fires. In the aspect of the reliability of this study, generic models and the failure data used in assessing the risks of CNG buses are appropriate. However, more accurate physics-based models and databases should be supplemented with this study to provide the better results.

Preparation and Properties of Water-based Adhesive Using Gemini Type Nonionic Reactive Surfactants (제미니형 비이온 반응성 계면활성제를 이용한 수성접착제의 제조 및 특성)

  • In order to improve the adhesion of water-based adhesive, gemini type nonionic reactive surfactants were synthesized and applied to water-based adhesives. The surfactants were synthesized by using maleic acid and polyoxyethylene cetyl ether having different length of ethylene oxide and confirmed by FT-IR and $^1H-NMR$. Their appearance was light yellow wax. The cloud point of the compound was more than $78^{\circ}C$. The measured critical micelle concentration (c.m.c) was $1.0{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}7.0{\times}10^{-4}mol/L$ and surface tension at c.m.c was 25.9~32.0 mN/m. As the number of ethylene oxide increased, the emulsifying power was improved. The foaming height of each compound by Ross-Miles method was 1.4~4.5 cm. The synthesized surfactants was then used as an emulsifier in emulsion polymerization of water-based adhesives and its physical properties were evaluated. The solid contents of prepared adhesives was 59%. The average particle size and initial tackiness of the prepared adhesives were 164~297 nm and ball no. of 20~32, respectively. The peel strength was $1.8{\sim}2.1kg_f/mm$. The retention rate of adhesives viscosity was evaluated to 99% during 30 days. Therefore, synthesized gemini type nonionic reactive surfactants are expected to be applied as an emulsifier for the high adhesive force.

Surveying the Impact of Work Hours and Schedules on Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Sleep

  • Background: Given the long hours on the road involving multiple and interacting work stressors (i.e., delivery pressures, irregular shifts, ergonomic hazards), commercial drivers face a plethora of health and safety risks. Researchers goal was to determine whether and to what extent long-haul trucker work schedules influence sleep duration and quality. Methods: Survey and biometric data collected from male long-haul truck drivers at a major truckstop in central North Carolina over a six month period. Results: Daily hours worked (mean = 11 hours, 55 minutes) and frequency of working over government-mandated daily HOS regulations (23.8% "frequently or always") were statistically significant predictors of sleep duration. Miles driven per week (mean = 2,812.61), irregular daily hours worked (63.8%), and frequency of working over the daily hour limit (23.8% "frequently or always") were statistically significant predictors of sleep quality. Conclusion: Implications of findings suggest a comprehensive review of the regulations and operational conditions for commercial motor vehicle drivers be undertaken.

  • Since the adoption of GMDSS, the band 495-505 kHz has no longer been globally used for maritime calling and distress and the designation of this band for calling and distress was suppressed at WRC-07. In accordance with provision RR, maritime mobile operations are presently limited to radiotelegraphy. Accordingly, use of the band has diminished.This frequency band 415 kHz to 526.5 kHz and high frequencies is ideally suited to broadcast from shore to ship. The surface wave propagation of a coast station using this band can provide a coverage area from the coast to 400 nautical miles off shore.

Islamic Humanity: A New Approach to Minimizing Non-Performing Financing at the Islamic Bank in Indonesia

  • NPF Islamic banking needs to be resolved because it affects banking performance in terms of income and the quality of its productive assets. This study aims to solve problems of non-performing financing and assess and analyze whether the implementation of the Islamic Humanity model can reduce the problem of financing at Bank Syariah Mandiri Indonesia. The study uses qualitative method with Miles and Huberman approach for analizing data through four steps which are; (a) data collection (b) data reduction (c) data display, and (d) conclusion drawing/verification. The results of the study found non performing financing can be reduced with using a new approach namely the Islamic Humanity Approach, which is an interaction between several aspects, namely (a) spiritual aspects, (b) economic aspects, (c) social aspects, and (d) justice aspects. The Islamic humanity model carried out in problem-solving activities at Bank Syariah Mandiri Indonesia includes a friendly approach, communication and deliberation in a family, respect for people, empathy, the concept of justice, and the concept of prayer. Islamic humanity approach shows success in reducing non-performing financing. The research concluded Islamic humanity as a new approach to reduce non-performing financing at Bank Syariah Mandiri Indonesia and it can be implemented to all Islamic banking in Indonesia.

  • We realized a wireless multiple integrated laser engagement system composed of personal area network using Zigbee. The wireless laser detector had function of analog signal processor, decoder and wireless communication. However, it should consume low power and be small and light in order to be attached to a soldier's body. The decoder was realized in software to be small and light. We induced low power consumption as reducing the load of system using a narrow band optical filter. The fabricated wireless laser detector functioned well in optically noisy environment. Although the communication to the player unit through the wireless personal area network was dependent on the attachment place it was perfectly worked with transmission power of -40.2dBm or more.

  • Recently, the supplying of basic materials for construction of building as sand is big issues due to lack of shoreside supply. For solving this problem, many suppliers attempt to gather aggregate from the sea bottom of the EEZ & west coastal area of Korea. In this regard, the 'Jangantoe' which exists in the westside of the Daesan port is worth noticing as good seasand supplying areas. The Chungnam Aggregate Association have plan to gather of seasand from 'Gaduckdo 5 regions & Igok 3 regions' which lies westside about 6 miles off from the Jangantoe areas. This designated area also locates upper parts of the Gadaeam TSS(Traffic Separation Scheme) which is very useful passing routes for the sailing vessels of Inchon & Daesan ports. In this study, the evaluation of the safety for passing vessels in the vicinity of the seasand gathering area was performed by various methods of radar observations & GICOMS AIS data for marine traffics and vessel traffic-flow simulation of the 'Marine Traffic Safety Diagnostic Scheme'. By the results of this evaluation, I suggested comprehensive countermeasures for the safety of passing vessels in the near the seasand gathering area.

Postoperative Electroacupuncture in 2 Dogs showed Continuous Lameness after the Reduction of Medial Patellar Luxation (슬개골 내측탈구 교정술 후 지속적 파행을 보이는 개에서의 전침치료 2례)

  • Canine medial patellar luxation can cause hindlimb lameness in toy breeds and surgical operation needs when the lameness does not improve or worsen. In this study, the 2 dogs that showed postoperative non-weight bearing lameness were treated with electroacupuncture (EA) and the effects of postoperative EA were examined. Xue Hai (Sea of Blood), Du Bi (calf's nose, 2 acupoint), Zu San Li (leg 3 miles) acupoints were used in acupuncture. Xue Hai acupoint was connected to positive pole and Zu San Li was negative for 20 min with 2~5 volt, 5~30 Hz in EA. In case 1, EA were performed eight times for 26 days after 29th postoperative day and walking was improved from 6th EA. In case 2, EA were conducted five times for 17 day after 26th postoperative day and walking was improved from 4th EA. It may be possible to improve walking by EA treatment in the dogs that show post-operative non-weight bearing lameness, but the relationship between the effects of EA and the injury of stifle joint should be inspected.

  • Sternal malunion, or loss, developed after a median sternotomy cannot only be difficult to manage and treat, but also may diminish one's quality-of-life drastically. The technique presented here represents a multispecialty approach in one stage for the reconstruction of an unstable thoracic cage. The procedure utilized a donated sternum and ribs. The sternum with ribs harvested from a single donor included adipose derived stromal vascular fraction (ADSVF) cells with marrow also from the same donor. Autologous muscle flaps, stabilized with acellular dermal matrix were utilized to provide a robust blood supply to the ADSVF cells and bone grafts. Acellular dermal matrix was used to construct the ribs and stabilize the plugs of stem cells and bone. These procedures, in the hands of multispecialty physicians, have led to several successful reconstructions involving complex chest wall deformities. This surgical intervention was performed in a one stage operation. This represents the first successful complete sternal transplant in a patient with return to normal activities and increased quality-of-life.
