Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) is used extensively in the plastic industry and has been known as an environmental hormone (endocrine disruptor). Present study was undertaken to examine whether DBP can induce oxidative stress in mice. In this study, oxidative stress was measured in terms of the modification of lipid peroxidation and gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase (${\gamma}-GT$) activity. The activity of ${\gamma}-GT$, the level of lipid peroxidation and serum toxicity index were measured in male ICR mice after treatment with DBP (5 g/kg, po). Administration of DBP was found to significantly increase the level of lipid peroxidation approximately 2 fold in liver. The activity of ${\gamma}-GT$ in the liver of DBP-exposed animals was also increased approximately 2.5 fold. However, DBP did not alter the parameters for hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and creatinine. These results indicate that DBP can induce oxidative stress in mice. The ${\gamma}-GT$ activity is considered to be increased as one of the adaptive defense mechanisms to oxidative stress induced by DBP.

Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) is not only a plasticizer and solvent used in industry but also one of endocrine disruptor chemicals, a low level contaminant found in a wide variety of different media ranging from drinking water to infant formulae. To evaluate the cytotoxic function of NK cells in mice after contact with DBP, C57BL/6 female mice were orally dosed with di-n-butyl phthalate (250, 500, or 750 mg/kg body weight) for 14 consecutive days, and the control mice were administered vehicle (corn oil).(omitted)
To evaluate the human risk of long-term intake of genetically modified (GM) rice, we carried out RT-PCR of housekeeping genes. Housekeeping genes, which show highly uniform expression in living organisms during various stages of development and under different environmental conditions, were normalized by RT-PCR. We assessed the expression of 10 common housekeeping genes (18s rRNA, 25S rRNA, UBC, UBQ5, UBQ10, ACT11, GAPDH, eEF-$1{\alpha}$, ${\beta}$-TUB, GAPDH, ${\beta}$-actin, B2m, G6pd2, Gyk, Gus, Hprt, Cyclophlin A, Tfrc, ${\alpha}$-tubulin and RPL13A) in the liver, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, kidney and spleen of mice fed GM or non-GM rice. We found no significant differences in the expression of housekeeping genes between the two groups of mice.
The hepatoprotective effect of liposoluble portion of Pyropia yezoensis (PYLP) was investigated against alcohol-induced liver injury in mice. Fatty acids were predominant in PYLP obtained from hexane fraction of 70% EtOH extract after ultrasonication. In particular, polyunsaturated fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid and linoleic acid accounted for 56.91% of the total lipids. PYLP significantly reduced liver damage induced by the alcohol treatment in mice. PYLP treatment increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathion peroxidase by reducing thiobarbituric acid reactive substances. Histological observations showed that PYLP minimizes damage to living tissue induced by alcohol treatment by modulating the expression level of proteins involved in the anti-apoptotic signaling pathway. Our results suggest that PYLP, rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids extracted from the red alga P. yezoensis, will be useful as a potential liver protectant in the hangover industry.
Objectives : Ojeok-san (OJS), an oriental herbal formula, has been used in Asian countries including Korea, China and Japan to treat the common cold and illnesses including fatigue and gastrointestinal disorders. The purpose of this study was to examine the anti-obesity effect and molecular mechanism of OJS, on adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells. Also, the effects of OJS in obese mice fed a high-fat diet on adiposity were examined. Methods : Preferentially, we analyzed the component of OJS and measured the stability of its component in OJS according to study periods using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In vitro, 3T3-L1 cells were treated with OJS (50 to 200 μg/mL) during differentiation for 8 days. The accumulation of lipid droplets was determined by Oil Red O staining. The expressions of genes related to adipogenesis were measured by RT-PCR and Western blot analyses. For anti-obesty effect in vivo, we experimented for 8 weeks with four group (normal diet (CON), high-fat diet (HF), high-fat diet with OJS (HF+OJS) and high-fat diet with Bang-pung-tong-sung-san (HF+BTS) in comparison group HF+OJS).Results : OJS showed inhibitory activity on adipocyte differentiation at 3T3-L1 preadipocytes without affect cell toxicity as assessed by measuring fat accumulation and adipogenesis. In addition, OJS significantly reduced the expression levels of several adipocyte marker genes including proliferator activated receptor-γ(PPAR-γ) and CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein-α(C/EBP-α). Also OJS-administered mice showed significant inhibitory of body weights and abdominal adipose tissue weights. Conclusions : This study showed that traditional medicine OJS has an anti-obesity effect in vitro and in vivo. Thus, OJS could be developed as a supplement for reduction of body weight gain induced by an obesity.
This study evaluated the change in anti-allergy activity of ${\beta}-glucan$ by electron beam irradiation. ${\beta}-Glucan$ was irradiated at dose of 50 kGy and then orally pre-treated with electron beam irradiated and non irradiated ${\beta}-Glucan$ for 7 days. After pre-treatment, allergy was induced by injection of ovalbumin (OVA). Serum total immunoglobulin E (IgE) and OVA-specific IgE levels in the allergic mice was significantly increased but the mice pre-treated 50 kGy electron beam irradiated ${\beta}-glucan$ was significantly decreased the levels of total IgE and OVA-specific IgE, respectively. Moreover, cytokine production (interleukin-4) was also decreased in the 50 kGy electron beam irradiated ${\beta}-Glucan$ pre-treated mice. These results indicate that pre-treatment of 50 kGy electron beam irradiated ${\beta}-glucan$ may elevate the anti-allergy activity. Therefore, electron beam-irradiated ${\beta}-glucan$ could be used for nutraceutical foods in food industry.
Dichloromethane, ethanol, and boiling water extracts of the brown alga Ecklonia cava were examined in vivo for their antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory activities in mice. These activities were evaluated by yeast-induced pyrexia, tail-flick test, and phorbol myristate acetate-induced inflammation (edema, erythema, and blood flow). Ethanol extract of E. cava (0.4 mg/ear) inhibited the inflammatory symptoms of mouse ear edema, erythema, and blood flow by 82.6%, 69.0%, and 65.4%, respectively. This extract also demonstrated potent analgesic activity. No acute toxicity was observed after p.o. administration of each extract (5 g/kg bw). These in vivo data are in agreement with the claims of the health care industry and indigenous medicine that E. cava is an effective remedy for inflammation-related symptoms.

We investigated the effects of Ecklonia cava ethanol extract (ECE) on sleep architecture and sleep profiles. ECE was orally administered at a dose of 100, 250, or 500 mg/kg to C57BL/6N mice and its effects were measured by recording electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram. Administration of ECE (250 and 500 mg/kg) significantly induced non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREMS) without affecting rapid eye movement sleep. The increase in NREMS by ECE (500 mg/kg) was significant (P < 0.05) during the first 2 h after administration. In addition, ECE had no effect on EEG power density (an indicator of sleep quality) in NREMS. These results suggest that ECE induces NREMS in a manner similar to physiological sleep.

This study is investigated the effect of selenium against neurotoxicity induced by MPTP(1-methy-4-phenyl-propion-oxypiperidine) in mice. In order to demonstrate neuroprotective activity of selenium, mice were administrated orally with selenium(25, 50, 100 ${\mu}g/kg$, once/day) for 10 days, and MPTP(10 mg/kg) was injected subcutaneously into the mice for 6 days from the beginning 1hr before selenium treatment. Test of rota road activity was inhibited by treatment with selenium in MPTP-induced neurotoxicity group when compared to MPTP treatment group in normal mice. Monoamine oxidase(MAO)-B activity and cerebral lipid peroxide content were significantly decreased in the treatment of selenium in MPTP-induced neurotoxicity group when compared to MPTP treatment group in normal mice and MAO-A was not affected. Activities of cerebral superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase were significantly increased in the treatment of selenium in MPTP-induced neurotoxicity group when compared to MPTP treatment group in normal mice. These results suggest that selenium might be estimated the result from the cooperative action of its inhibitory effect on monoamine oxidase-B with that of the enhancement of antioxidant(SOD, catalase, GSH-Px) defence ability.

The MICE(Meeting, Incentive travel, Convention, and Exhibition) industry grows steadily. Especially, exhibition industry plays an important role as the effective sales and marketing tools. However, lots of studies have focused on the flow analysis of audience traffic, booth recommendation or formulaic interactions between audiences and contents in the exhibition hall. In this study, we proposed an intelligent Interactive system considering audience's response for providing personalized exhibition service. First, we extracted components of the system architecture through the previous studies. Second, we suggested the system architecture and scenarios for intelligent interactions between audiences and contents. We hope that the proposed system will strengthen the basis for implementing interactive system in the exhibition industry.
