  • We derive a new Cramer-Rao type lower bound for the reciprocal of the density height of the median-unbiased estimators which improves most of the previous lower bounds and is attainable under much weaker conditions. We also identify useful necessary and sufficient condition for the attainability of the lower bound which is considerably weaker than those for the mean-unbiased estimators. It is shown that these lower bounds are attained not only for the family of continuous distributions with monotone likelihood ratio (MLR) property but also for the location and scale families with strong unimodal property.

  • This paper has improved several ratio type estimators of the population median including their generalization in the presence of three known quartiles of an auxiliary variable. The properties of the improved estimators are discussed and applied. Both the empirical and simulation studies confirm that our new estimators perform efficiently.

  • An approach to make the information bound sharper in median-unbiased estimation, based on an analogue of the Cramer-Rao inequality developed by Sung et al. (1990), is introduced for continuous densities with a nuisance parameter by considering information quantities contained both in the parametric function of interest and in the nuisance parameter in a linear fashion. This approach is comparable to that of improving the information bound in mean-unbiased estimation for the case of two unknown parameters. Computation of an optimal weight corresponding to the nuisance parameter is also considered.

  • Though median filter is used for removing noise and smoothing image. But, the result of it has distortion around edge. And then, this paper proposes new noise removing algorithm by recursive morphological processing. Basic operation is same each other, but there is some different processing method between recursive morphology and general morphology theory. This recursive morphological filter can be viewed as the weighted order static filter, and then it has a weighted SE(structuring element). Especially using this algorithm to remove the 10% gaussian noise, this paper confirmed that PSNR is improved about 0.642~1.5757 db reserving edge well better than the results of the traditional median filter.

  • Recently the author studied a one-parameter family of divergences and considered the related median minimization problem of finite points over these divergences in general symmetric cones. In this article, to utilize the results practically, we deal with a special symmetric cone called second order cone, which is important in optimization fields. To be more specific, concrete computations of divergences with its gradients and the unique minimizer of the median minimization problem of two points are provided skillfully.

  • This study has developed a new liquid crystal calibration technique using Neural networks with median filtering and applied this technique to heat transfer measurements. To verify the validity of this new measurement technique, the local Nusselt numbers on a flat plate surface subjected to an axisymmetric impinging jet were measured and compared with the results by the conventional Hue-temperature calibration technique under the same conditions. Because the Neural networks predict the non-linear relations between temperatures and corresponding R, G, B values, Neural networks-median filtering calibration technique can utilize a much wider color band in the experiment than the Hue-temperature calibration technique, resulting in a significant reduction in the experimental time.

  • This article explores the analysis of longitudinal surveys in which same units are investigated on several occasions. Multivariate exponential ratio type estimator has been proposed for the estimation of the finite population median at the current occasion in two occasion longitudinal surveys. Information on several additional auxiliary variables, which are stable over time and readily available on both the occasions, has been utilized. Properties of the proposed multivariate estimator, including the optimum replacement strategy, are presented. The proposed multivariate estimator is compared with the sample median estimator when there is no matching from a previous occasion and with the exponential ratio type estimator in successive sampling when information is available on only one additional auxiliary variable. The merits of the proposed estimator are justified by empirical interpretations and validated by a simulation study with the help of some natural populations.

  • In this paper, we propose a modified median filter for impulse noise reduction. The proposed method based on multi-step finds noisy pixels from the corrupted image and applies filtering on the noisy pixels. Neighbor pixels for filtering are filtered by linear filter which adjusts filtering direction according to an edge. Thus, our proposed method not only preserves edge, but also reduces noise in uniform region. Experimental results show that our proposed method has better quality than those by existing modified median filtering method.

  • The author surveyed on the maxillary median diastema of 1,522 (male: 805, female:717) 'H' and 'K' primary school children aged from 6 to 13. The results were as follows: 1. The prevalence of the maxillary median diastema was 11.6% in male, 7.5% in female and 9.7% in both sexes. 2. The prevalence of the maxillary median diastema showed the highest rate in 8 years old boys and girls, and it showed decreasing tendency according to increasing ago. 3. The prevalence of mesiodens was 0.4%, and boys had higher rate than girls. 4. Mean value of 'Frenum Distance' was 5.7mm in male, 5.5mm in female and mean value of 'Divergent Degree' was 2.0mm in male, 1.6mm in female.

  • In JPEG2000, the Cohen-Daubechies-Feauveau (CDF) 9/7-tap wavelet filter is implemented using the conventional lifting scheme. On the other hand, this wavelet filter has two problems: the filter coefficients remain complex, and the conventional lifting scheme does not consider the image edges in the coding process. This paper proposes an effective lifting scheme to solve these problems. For this purpose, optimal 9/7-tap wavelet filters were designed in two steps. In the first step, the appropriate filter coefficients were selected. In the second step, a median operator was employed to consider the image edges. The experimental results with the median lifting scheme and the combination of filter optimization with the median lifting show that the proposed methods outperform the well-known CDF 9/7-tap wavelet filter of JPEG2000 on the edge-dominant images.
