  • Let M be a left R-module and R be a ring with unity, and $S=\{0,2,3,4,{\ldots}\}$ be a submonoid. Then $M[x^{-s}]=\{a_0+a_2x^{-2}+a_3x^{-3}+{\cdots}+a_nx^{-n}{\mid}a_i{\in}M\}$ is an $R[x^s]$-module. In this paper we show some properties of $M[x^{-s}]$ as an $R[x^s]$-module. Let $f:M{\rightarrow}N$ be an R-linear map and $\overline{M}[x^{-s}]=\{a_2x^{-2}+a_3x^{-3}+{\cdots}+a_nx^{-n}{\mid}a_i{\in}M\}$ and define $N+\overline{M}[x^{-s}]=\{b_0+a_2x^{-2}+a_3x^{-3}+{\cdots}+a_nx^{-n}{\mid}b_0{\in}N,\;a_i{\in}M}$. Then $N+\overline{M}[x^{-s}]$ is an $R[x^s]$-module. We show that given a short exact sequence $0{\rightarrow}L{\rightarrow}M{\rightarrow}N{\rightarrow}0$ of R-modules, $0{\rightarrow}L{\rightarrow}M[x^{-s}]{\rightarrow}N+\overline{M}[x^{-s}]{\rightarrow}0$ is a short exact sequence of $R[x^s]$-module. Then we show $E_1+\overline{E_0}[x^{-s}]$ is not an injective left $R[x^s]$-module, in general.

  • This study was conducted to examine the basis for the information to select the suitable potato varieties grown in new reclaimed land. The potatoes of five varieties were planted in the port with 4 different electrical conductivities of saturated extracts of soil taken the Saemangeum reclamation area, which was made of non-treatment salt and three concentrations of salt treatment, 1.6 dS $m^{-1}$, 3.2 dS $m^{-1}$, 4.8 dS $m^{-1}$, respectively. All of the potato varieties were uniformly emerged without missing plant in all treatment groups, even 4.8 dS $m^{-1}$ treatment group. According to the salt concentration of soil, required date to the emergence of the potato comparing to non-treatment salt was delayed 3-4 days in 1.6 dS $m^{-1}$, 6-10 days in 3.2 dS $m^{-1}$, 7-13 days in 4.8 dS $m^{-1}$, respectively, and the number of its branch decreased by 14-58% comparing to non-treatment salt depending on varieties. Since the increase of the salt concentration of the soil was more serious the decrease of the number of its branch, but plant height tended to increase when branch number per plant was small, which was depending on more number of its branch than salt concentration. Fresh tuber yield of potato comparing to non-treatment salt were decrease 33.7% in 1.6 dS $m^{-1}$, 59.5% in 3.2 dS $m^{-1}$, 79.3% 7-13 days in 4.8 dS $m^{-1}$, respectively. The threshold EC starting the growth inhibition of fresh weight decreased was 1.2 dS $m^{-1}$ for Chudong, 1.8 $m^{-1}$ for Chubeak, 1.9 $m^{-1}$ for Chugang and Chuyeong, and 2.0 $m^{-1}$ for Sumi, and EC which decreased 50% of dry weight index was 2.4 dS $m^{-1}$ for Chubaek, 2.45 dS $m^{-1}$ for Chudong, 2.81 dS $m^{-1}$ for Chugang, 3.03 dS $m^{-1}$ for Chuyeong, and 3.29 dS $m^{-1}$ for Sumi. The present results suggest that Sumi is considered to the suitable potato variety grown on saline soils.

  • In order to delineate distribution of the basement in the vicinity of a Quaternary fault outcrop near the Gamsansa temple in Gyeongju, we conducted a seismic refraction survey along a 188 m profile with a 4 m receiver interval. Through tomographic inversion, we define four layers with refraction velocities of approximately 350 m/s, 600 m/s, 1,100 m/s and 2,400 m/s, respectively. We depict a reversed fault at a location of 40 m apart from the base station of the profile and interpret a fracture zone related to fault movements in the NNW of the profile.

  • The growth and microcystins production characteristics of three species of Microcystis (M. aeruginosa, M. ichthyoblabe, M. viridis) isolated from Yeongchun dam and Ankei dam in Kyungpook Province, South Korea were investigated at temperatures of $15{\sim}35^{\circ}C$ and light intensities of $35{\sim}180\;{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$. All of the three species exhibited the highest growth rates (${\mu}_{max}$) over the $30^{\circ}C$. The maximum growth rates of M. aeruginosa and M. ichthyoblabe was observed at $70\;{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$, while M. viridis showed maximum growth rate at $35\;{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$. The maximum production of total microcystins was observed at $20^{\circ}C$, and the production of microcystins decreased according as temperature increase. The highest microcystins production of M. aeruginosa, M. ichthyoblabe and M. viridis observed at light intensities of $120\;{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$, $70\;{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$ and $35\;{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$, respectively. The concentration of microcyst in production and microcystin types of three species according to temperatures and light intensities showed clear difference between the species.

  • To reveal subsurface structures of the Ulsan fault, seismic data were recorded along a 750-m long line near Nongso-Eup in Ulsan. P and S waves were generated simultaneously by impacting a 5 kg sledgehammer on a tilted plate. The data were received by 16 10-Hz 3-component geophones at 3 m intervals. Refracted P waves were inverted using the tomography method. Dip moveout and migration were applied to reflection data processed following a general sequence. Four layers were identified based on P-wave velocities and P- and S-wave stacked image. From top to bottom, the P-wave velocity of each layer ranges in $300{\sim}1100\;m/s$, $1100{\sim}1700\;m/s$, $1700{\sim}2700\;m/s$, and greater than 2700 m/s. The corresponding thickness of the top three layers averages 3.9 m, 5.9 m, 4.4 m, respectively. The S-wave stack section is effective to define subsurface structures shallower than 10 m.

  • In this paper, Reinforced concrete (R/C) and R/C+steel plate concrete slab was carried out by SAP2000 software program in order to compare the stability of the multi-functional fishway, that is Bonggok fishway, built at Bonggok river recently in Gumi city, when the size of underground passage is $1m{\times}0.2m$, $1m{\times}0.4m$, $1m{\times}0.6m$ and the velocity is 0.8m/s, 1.2m/s, 1.6m/s respectively for the S2 (R/C+S/C). The analysis shows the maximum stress of S2 decreases less 26~50% than that of Bonggok, bending moment of sidewall decreases less 28~54%, maximum stress of side wall decreases less 17~31%, bending moment of upper slab decreases less 24~47%, maximum stress of upper slab decreases less 4~20%, and bending moment decreases less 10~27% than that of Bonggok. The complementation is required as much as the following percent; 27% and 25% for the maximum stress and bending moment of underground passage, 15% and 24% for the side wall maximum stress and bending moment, and 10% and 14% for the upper slab maximum stress and bending moment, respectively. This result shows that the S2 is greatly superior to that of the Bonggok fishway, and underground passage size of $1m{\times}0.4m$ is superior to that of $1m{\times}0.2m$ or $1m{\times}0.6m$, and R/C+S/C slab is superior to that of R/C slab. This result is expected to be the basic data for the construction and design of the multi-functional fishway.

  • This study was carried out with respect to the heat release rate (HRR) properties of building wood. Heat release characteristics were measured using a cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1) with four kinds of wood. The time to ignition measured after the combustion in $25kW/m^2$ external heat flux was 35 to 55 s. Time to ignition of both lauan and red pine was marked with the most delayed value in each of 54 s, 55 s. The maximum heat release rate ($HRR_{peak}$) was $156.87{\sim}235.1kW/m^2$, and the risk of early fire was highest in spruce. Total heat release of red pine was obtained in the highest value with $114.2MJ/m^2$. The mean effective heat of combustion of Japanese cedar was 19.1 MJ/kg and the highest among the samples. Fire risk of wood by FPI was orderly increased from lauan ($0.2468s{\cdot}m^2/kW$), red pine ($0.2339s{\cdot}m^2/kW$), spruce ($0.2308s{\cdot}m^2/kW$) to Japanese cedar ($0.2231s{\cdot}m^2/kW$). Fire risk of wood by FGI get increased from lauan ($0.5088kW/m^2{\cdot}s$), red pine ($0.5111kW/m^2{\cdot}s$), Japanese cedar ($2.8522kW/m^2{\cdot}s$) to spruce ($3.0662kW/m^2{\cdot}s$). Therefore, the risk of fire on the heat release characteristics of woods were found that spruce and Japanese cedar showed the high value compared with the other specimens.

  • For a grading monoid S, we prove that (1) if (S, M) is a valuation semigroup, then M is an m-canonical ideal, that is, an ideal M such that M : (M:J)=J for every ideal J of S. (2) if S is an integrally closed semigroup and S has a principal m-canonical ideal, then S is a valuation semigroup, and (3) if S is a completely integrally closed and S has an m-canonical ideal I, then every ideal of S is I-invertible, that is, J+(I+J)=I for every ideal J of S.

  • Assuming that fishing nets are porous structures to suck water into their mouth and then filtrate water out of them, the flow resistance N of nets with wall area S under the velicity v was taken by $R=kSv^2$, and the coefficient k was derived as $$k=c\;Re^{-m}(\frac{S_n}{S_m})n(\frac{S_n}{S})$$ where $R_e$ is the Reynolds' number, $S_m$ the area of net mouth, $S_n$ the total area of net projected to the plane perpendicular to the water flow. Then, the propriety of the above equation and the values of c, m and n were investigated by the experimental results on plane nettings carried out hitherto. The value of c and m were fixed respectively by $240(kg\cdot sec^2/m^4)$ and 0.1 when the representative size on $R_e$ was taken by the ratio k of the volume of bars to the area of meshes, i. e., $$\lambda={\frac{\pi\;d^2}{21\;sin\;2\varphi}$$ where d is the diameter of bars, 21 the mesh size, and 2n the angle between two adjacent bars. The value of n was larger than 1.0 as 1.2 because the wakes occurring at the knots and bars increased the resistance by obstructing the filtration of water through the meshes. In case in which the influence of $R_e$ was negligible, the value of $cR_e\;^{-m}$ became a constant distinguished by the regions of the attack angle $ \theta$ of nettings to the water flow, i. e., 100$(kg\cdot sec^2/m^4)\;in\;45^{\circ}<\theta \leq90^{\circ}\;and\;100(S_m/S)^{0.6}\;(kg\cdot sec^2/m^4)\;in\;0^{\circ}<\theta \leq45^{\circ}$. Thus, the coefficient $k(kg\cdot sec^2/m^4)$ of plane nettings could be obtained by utilizing the above values with $S_m\;and\;S_n$ given respectively by $$S_m=S\;sin\theta$$ and $$S_n=\frac{d}{I}\;\cdot\;\frac{\sqrt{1-cos^2\varphi cos^2\theta}} {sin\varphi\;cos\varphi} \cdot S$$ But, on the occasion of $\theta=0^{\circ}$ k was decided by the roughness of netting surface and so expressed as $$k=9(\frac{d}{I\;cos\varphi})^{0.8}$$ In these results, however, the values of c and m were regarded to be not sufficiently exact because they were obtained from insufficient data and the actual nets had no use for k at $\theta=0^{\circ}$. Therefore, the exact expression of $k(kg\cdotsec^2/m^4)$, for actual nets could De made in the case of no influence of $R_e$ as follows; $$k=100(\frac{S_n}{S_m})^{1.2}\;(\frac{S_m}{S})\;.\;for\;45^{\circ}<\theta \leq90^{\circ}$$, $$k=100(\frac{S_n}{S_m})^{1.2}\;(\frac{S_m}{S})^{1.6}\;.\;for\;0^{\circ}<\theta \leq45^{\circ}$$
