  • A new method to solve a Lyapunov equation for a discrete delay system is proposed. Using this method, a Lyapunov equation can be solved from a simple linear equation and N-th power of a constant matrix, where N is the state delay. Combining a Lyapunov equation and frequency domain stability, a new stability condition is proposed. The proposed stability condition ensures stability of a discrete state delay system whose state delay is not exactly known but only known to lie in a certain interval.

  • In this paper, we use Lyapunov equations and functions to consider the linear systems with perturbed system matrices. And we consider that what choice of Lyapunov function V would allow the largest perturbation and still guarantee that V is negative definite. We find that this is determined by testing for the existence of solutions to a related quadratic equation with matrix coefficients and unknowns the so-called matrix Riccati equation.

  • The control objectives in this paper are to move the gantry of a container crane to its target position and to suppress the transverse vibration of the payload. The crane system is modeled as an axially moving nonlinear string equation, in which control inputs are applied at both ends, through the gantry and the payload. The dynamics of the moving string are derived using Hamilton's principle. The Lyapunov function method is used in deriving a boundary control law, in which the Lyapunov function candidate is introduced from the total mechanical energy of the system. The performance of the proposed control law is compared with other two control algorithms available in the literature. Experimental results are given.

  • We describe a solution to the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck equation $\frac{dI}{dt}-\frac{1}{\tau}$I(t)=cV(t) where V(t) is a constant multiple of a Gaussian white noise. Our solution is based on a discrete set of Gaussian white noise obtained by taking sample points from a sum of single frequency harmonics that have random amplitudes, random frequencies, and random phases. Hence, it is different from the solution by the standard random walk using random numbers generated by the Box-Mueller algorithm. We prove that the power of the signal has the additive property, from which we derive that the Lyapunov characteristic exponent for our solution is positive. This compares with the solution by other methods where the noise is kept to be in an error range so that its Lyapunov exponent is negative.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose a procedure for evaluating quantitatively the increase of the equivalent damping ratio of a structure with passive/active vibration control systems subjected to a stationary wind load. A Lyapunov function governing the response of a structure and its differential equation are formulated first. Then the state-space equation of the structure coupled with the secondary damping system is solved. The results are substituted into the differential equation of the Lyapunov function and its derivative. The equivalent damping ratios are obtained from the Lyapunov function of the combined system and its derivative, and are used to assess the control effect of various damping devices quantitatively. The accuracy of the proposed procedure is confirmed by applying it to a structure with nonlinear as well as linear passive/active control systems.

  • In this paper, we propose that the chaotic behavior analysis in the mobile robot of embedding some chaotic such as Chua`s equation, Arnold equation with obstacle. In order to analysis of chaotic behavior in the mobile robot, we apply not only qualitative analysis such as time-series, embedding phase plane, but also quantitative analysis such as Lyapunov exponent In the mobile robot with obstacle. We consider that there are two type of obstacle, one is fixed obstacle and the other is VDP obstacle which have an unstable limit cycle. In the VDP obstacles case, we only assume that all obstacles in the chaos trajectory surface in which robot workspace has an unstable limit cycle with Van der Pol equation.

  • This note Presents sufficient conditions for Lyapunov's stability and instability of a class of nonlinear nonautonomous second-order ordinary differential equations. Such a class includes as particular cases a remarkably large number of differential equations with specific physical applications. Two successive nonlinear transformations are applied to the original differential equation in order to convert it into a more convenient form for stability analysis purposes. The obtained stability / instability conditions depend closely on the parameterization of the original differential equation.

  • Stability of a coupled nonautonomous ordinary differential equation is investigated. Asymptotic convergence to zero of a part of state vector is additionally shown, otherwise only uniform stability could have been concluded by the Lyapunov direct method. Obtained results could be particularly useful in analysis of nonautonomous systems in which the invariance principle does not hold. An illustrating example is given.
