Characterizations of Zero-Term Rank Preservers of Matrices over Semirings

  • Let $\mathcal{M}(S)$ denote the set of all $m{\times}n$ matrices over a semiring S. For $A{\in}\mathcal{M}(S)$, zero-term rank of A is the minimal number of lines (rows or columns) needed to cover all zero entries in A. In [5], the authors obtained that a linear operator on $\mathcal{M}(S)$ preserves zero-term rank if and only if it preserves zero-term ranks 0 and 1. In this paper, we obtain new characterizations of linear operators on $\mathcal{M}(S)$ that preserve zero-term rank. Consequently we obtain that a linear operator on $\mathcal{M}(S)$ preserves zero-term rank if and only if it preserves two consecutive zero-term ranks k and k + 1, where $0{\leq}k{\leq}min\{m,n\}-1$ if and only if it strongly preserves zero-term rank h, where $1{\leq}h{\leq}min\{m,n\}$.

Multi-Domain Model for Electric Traction Drives Using Bond Graphs

  • In this work the Multi-Domain model of an electric vehicle is developed. The electric domain model consists on the traction drive and allows including faults associated with stator winding. The thermal model is based on a spatial discretization. It receives the power dissipated in the electric domain, it interacts with the environment and provides the temperature distribution in the induction motor. The mechanical model is a half vehicle model. Given that all models are obtained using the same approach (Bond Graph) their integration becomes straightforward. This complete model allows simulating the whole system dynamics and the analysis of electrical/mechanical/thermal interaction. First, experimental results are aimed to validate the proposed model. Then, simulation results illustrate the interaction between the different domains and highlight the capability of including faults.

Influence of Growth Conditions on Plasmid DNA Production

  • The obtention of high yields of purified plasmid DNA is viewed as an essential issue to be considered towards efficient production of DNA vaccines and therapeutic plasmids. In this work, Escherichia coli $DH5\alpha$. bearing the pVAXI-LacZ plasmid was grown in a developed semi-defined medium at different temperatures and tryptone concentrations. Analysis of pDNA yields and E. coli morphology revealed that at higher temperatures (37 and $40^{\circ}C$), higher specific yields and E. coli filamentation were obtained. However, the best results were achieved when a lower tryptone concentration was used. This approach was shown to be a powerful tool to promote plasmid amplification, keeping the desirable plasmid structure, and favoring the attainment of quality. Our results suggest that by using tryptone alone as an amino acid source, pDNA amplification was improved and a specific yield of 20.43 mg pDNA/g dcw was achieved, proving that this strategy can improve pDNA yield even at a small scale.

Shielding effects and buckling of steel tanks in tandem arrays under wind pressures

  • This paper deals with the buckling behavior of thin-walled aboveground tanks under wind load. In order to do that, the wind pressures are obtained by means of wind-tunnel experiments, while the structural non linear response is computed by means of a finite element discretization of the tank. Wind-tunnel models were constructed and tested to evaluate group effects in tandem configurations, i.e. one or two tanks shielding an instrumented tank. Pressures on the roof and on the cylindrical part were measured by pressure taps. The geometry of the target tank is similar in relative dimensions to typical tanks found in oil storage facilities, and several group configurations were tested with blocking tanks of different sizes and different separation between the target tank and those blocking it. The experimental results show changes in the pressure distributions around the circumference of the tank for half diameter spacing, with respect to an isolated tank with similar dimensions. Moreover, when the front tank of the tandem array has a height smaller than the target tank, increments in the windward pressures were measured. From the computational analysis, it seems that the additional stiffness provided by the roof prevents reductions in the buckling load for cases even when increments in pressures develop in the top region of the cylinder.

Behaviour of steel joints under fire loading

  • This paper presents a state-of-the-art on the behaviour of steel joints under fire loading and some recent developments in this field, currently being carried out by the authors. Firstly, a review of the experimental research work on steel joints is presented, subdivided into isolated member tests, sub-structure tests and tests on complete building structures. Special emphasis is placed on the seventh Cardington test, carried out by the authors within a collaborative research project led by the Czech Technical University in Prague. Secondly, a brief review of various temperature distributions within a joint is presented, followed by a discussion of the behaviour of isolated joints at elevated temperature, focussing on failure modes and analytical procedures for predicting the moment-rotation behaviour of joints at elevated temperature. Finally, a description of the coupled behaviour of joints as part of complete structures is presented, describing previous work and investigations on real fire (including heating and cooling phases) currently being carried out by the authors.

Numerical simulation of reinforced concrete nuclear containment under extreme loads

  • A finite element model for the non-linear dynamic analysis of a reinforced concrete (RC) containment shell of a nuclear power plant subjected to extreme loads such as impact and earthquake is presented in this work. The impact is modeled by using an uncoupled approach in which a load function is applied at the impact zone. The earthquake load is modeled by prescribing ground accelerations at the base of the structure. The nuclear containment is discretized spatially by using 20-node brick finite elements. The concrete in compression is modeled by using a modified $Dr{\ddot{u}}cker$-Prager elasto-plastic constitutive law where strain rate effects are considered. Cracking of concrete is modeled by using a smeared cracking approach where the tension-stiffening effect is included via a strain-softening rule. A model based on fracture mechanics, using the concept of constant fracture energy release, is used to relate the strain softening effect to the element size in order to guaranty mesh independency in the numerical prediction. The reinforcing bars are represented by incorporated membrane elements with a von Mises elasto-plastic law. Two benchmarks are used to verify the numerical implementation of the present model. Results are presented graphically in terms of displacement histories and cracking patterns. Finally, the influence of the shear transfer model used for cracked concrete as well as the effect due to a base slab incorporation in the numerical modeling are analyzed.

Identifying differentially expressed genes using the Polya urn scheme

  • A common interest in gene expression data analysis is to identify genes that present significant changes in expression levels among biological experimental conditions. In this paper, we develop a Bayesian approach to make a gene-by-gene comparison in the case with a control and more than one treatment experimental condition. The proposed approach is within a Bayesian framework with a Dirichlet process prior. The comparison procedure is based on a model selection procedure developed using the discreteness of the Dirichlet process and its representation via Polya urn scheme. The posterior probabilities for models considered are calculated using a Gibbs sampling algorithm. A numerical simulation study is conducted to understand and compare the performance of the proposed method in relation to usual methods based on analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by a Tukey test. The comparison among methods is made in terms of a true positive rate and false discovery rate. We find that proposed method outperforms the other methods based on ANOVA followed by a Tukey test. We also apply the methodologies to a publicly available data set on Plasmodium falciparum protein.

Chromium(III) recovery from tanning wastewater by adsorption on activated carbon and elution with sulfuric acid

  • Chromium(III) recovery from tanning wastewater by means of adsorption on activated carbon and elution with sulfuric acid was studied. Tests were carried out at laboratory scale on an effluent of industrial origin. Initially, proteinaceous materials and fats were separated via sieving followed by ultrafiltration. The chemical composition of the sample thus precleansed was (in g/L): 1.09 chromium(III); 10.36 sulfate; 11.10 sodium; 9.57 chloride; 0.40 proteinaceous materials; and 0.20 fats. Adsorptions were made at 20, 30, and $40^{\circ}C$, establishing what temperature favored chromium(III) uptake. At $40^{\circ}C$, the maximum cation fixation was 40.2 mg/g, and the lowest content in an equilibrium solution was 3.9 mg/L. As regards sodium, chloride, and sulfate, the concentrations before and after the treatment were similar. Likewise, it was found that protons were also retained, modifying the pH of the liquid medium. Adsorption isotherms were analyzed using the Langmuir, Temkin, and Freundlich models. Finally, the extraction of the adsorbed tanning agent with sulfuric acid was evaluated. A recovery of 96.5% was achieved with 0.9 N at $70^{\circ}C$ (13.23 g/L $Cr^{3+}$; 42.98 g/L sulfate; and 0.40 g/L NaCl).

Colourings and the Alexander Polynomial

  • Using a combination of calculational and theoretical approaches, we establish results that relate two knot invariants, the Alexander polynomial, and the number of quandle colourings using any finite linear Alexander quandle. Given such a quandle, specified by two coprime integers n and m, the number of colourings of a knot diagram is given by counting the solutions of a matrix equation of the form AX = 0 mod n, where A is the m-dependent colouring matrix. We devised an algorithm to reduce A to echelon form, and applied this to the colouring matrices for all prime knots with up to 10 crossings, finding just three distinct reduced types. For two of these types, both upper triangular, we found general formulae for the number of colourings. This enables us to prove that in some cases the number of such quandle colourings cannot distinguish knots with the same Alexander polynomial, whilst in other cases knots with the same Alexander polynomial can be distinguished by colourings with a specific quandle. When two knots have different Alexander polynomials, and their reduced colouring matrices are upper triangular, we find a specific quandle for which we prove that it distinguishes them by colourings.

Progress Report : Quantifying and Classifying Peculiarity of Cluster Galaxies

  • In the LCDM paradigm, hierarchical merging is thought to play a key role in the formation and evolution of massive galaxies. Theoretical and observational studies suggest that massive galaxies started forming at high redshifts and were assembled via numerous mergers. Galaxy clusters are the sites where the most massive galaxies are found and the most dramatic merger histories are embedded. The previous work of Sheen et al. (2012) identified via visual inspection many massive galaxies with merger features in clusters, which surprised the community. In this study we aim to quantify peculiarity of galaxies to pin down the merger frequency in cluster environments more objectively. We have performed optical deep imaging of 4 Abell clusters by using IMACS f/2 on a Magellan Badde 6.5-m telescope. For the galaxies in our data, we applied GALFIT algorithm, which fits analytic models to galaxy data, and we analyzed their residuals. We present the preliminary results of our sample galaxies.
