  • An analysis model for an elliptical fluid film bearing is described. The principles of hydrodynamic lubrication are outlined together with an expanded version of the governing pressure field equation as related to elliptical journal bearing. Finite element method approximations are given for the pressure field equation and a temperature model, both related to the fluid film thickness. The thermal effects in the lubricant viscosity, lubricant film thickness, variation of the journal rotating speed and influence of turbulence are investigated in this paper A finite element model and an iterative computational process are described, whereby full simultaneously converged field solutions for fluid film thickness, temperature, viscosity, pressure, stiffness and damping coefficient are obtained.

  • This study is the manufacture of solid lubricant oilless bearing using sintered parts. PTFE was as organic solid lubricant and $MoS_2$ as inorganic solid lubricant, and its characteristics were studied. Thickness of lubricant was suited 25~$100\mu\textrm{m}$ for lubricant characteristics. Curring temperature of MoS_2$ film was 12$0^{\circ}C$, 2 hours and that of PTFE film was $260^{\circ}C$, 20 minutes. The solid weight and solid volume of $MoS_2$ film was 51.7% and 27.4%, and that of PTFE was 44.9% and 24.3%. Chemical resistant of PTFE solid lubricant oilless bearing was excellent as salt test was 520hours, and usable temperature range was $-200~+280 ^{\circ}C$. Conduction of electricity can be increase by addition of graphite or $$\alpha$- PbO_2$. The electric conductivity was 100~180$\Omega$.

  • In precision mechanical components that experience sliding, it is important to reduce the friction to minimize surface damage. Particularly, new lubrication methods are needed to reduce friction in silicon based micro-systems applications. In this work, the tribological characteristics of PFPE (Perfluoropolyether) Zdol lubricant on silicon were investigated based on the thickness of the film. The lubricant was coated on silicon wafer specimens by the dip coating method. It was shown that the friction coefficient as well as stiction decreased as the thickness of the film increased. The results of this work may be applied to improve the tribological performance of silicon based micro-system components.

  • Viscosity index improver (VII) is one of the major additives to the modern multigrade lubricants for the viscosity stability against temperature rise. However, it causes shear thinning effects which make the film thickness lessened very delicately at high shear rate $(over\;10^5\;s^{-1})$ of general EHL contact regime. In order to exactly verify the VII's performance of viscosity stability at such high shear rate, it is necessary to make the measurement of EHL film thickness down to $\~100nm$ with fine resolution for the preliminary study of viscosity control. In this work, EHL film thickness of VII added lubricant is measured with the resolution of $\~5nm$, which will give very informative design tool for the synthesis of lubricants regarding the matter of load carrying capacity at high shear rate condition.

  • Elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) film is measured under the condition of viscosity index improver added to base oil. In-situ optical contact method using the interference principle make the measuring resolution of ~5 nm possible and enables the measuring range all over the contact area of up to ~300 $\mu\textrm{m}$ diameter. What is more important to the developed method by the author is that the measurement of EHL film thickness is possible in the range from 100 nm to 2 $\mu\textrm{m}$, which is the regime of worst contact failures in precision machinery. Viscosity index improver (VII) is one of the major additives to the modem multigrade lubricants for the viscosity stability against temperature rise. • This paper describes the variation of lubricant's temperature effects on elastohydrodynamic lubrication. The Newton-Raphson technique was used to solve the simultaneous system of Reynolds and elasticity equations. To show effects of lubricant's temperature, average temperature across the oil film was calculated using the energy equation. Pressure distribution, film shape, and temperature distribution were obtained for fully flooded conjunctions, and various dimensionless speed parameters while load and material parameters were held constant. Minimum film thickness were obtained for various material properties while load and velocity were held constant. It is drawn that the thermal effects have a strong influence on a minimum film thickness under high rolling velocity and slip ratio.

  • The role of viscosity index improver's(Ⅶ) additives for modem engine lubrication is complex. Under the condition of atmosphere or low shear rate, the characteristics of Ⅶ added lubricant is verified and quoted frequently for mathematical model of lubricant behavior. However, recent research shows that added lubricant has the characteristics of shear thinning at high shear rate condition although it performs well enough over the whole range of working temperature. At high shear rate, they show significant decrease of apparent viscosity irrespective of temperature. Many experimental researches verify that Ⅶ added lubricant shows boundary film layer formation on the solid surface as well as shear thinning effect by its polymeric molecular characteristics. The intend of our research is to verify the effects of Ⅶ from the viewpoint of continuum mechanics, because conventional Reynolds'equation with only pressure-viscosity relation cannot fully predict the lubricant behavior under the Ⅶ added condition. In these aspects, Reynolds'equation of Newtonian fluid model lacks the reflection of real fluid behavior and there is no way to explain the non-linear characteristics of Ⅶ added lubricant. In this research, we mathematically modeled the Ⅶ added lubricant behaviors which are the characteristics of non-Newtonian fluid behavior at high shear rate and boundary film formation on the solid surface. The consideration of elastic deformation in the contact region is also included in our computation and finally the converged film pressure and the film thickness with elastic deformation are obtained. The results are compared with those of Newtonian fluid model.

  • Many computational researches have been performed about EHL film thickness in the contact between cam and follower in the engine valve train system. However, those computations do not explain the characteristics of dynamic film thickness which means squeeze film effect. Without the consideration of transient term in the Reynold's equation, the predicted film thickness from steady state condition has large difference from the actual film thickness. In this study, we have investigated the kinematic and dynamic simulations of rocker-arm valve train system. From the dynamic simulation, the applied load and the entraining velocity of the lubricant between cam and follower are obtained and with these values the dynamic film thickness is computed by Newton-Raphson method and compared with the steady state film thickness.
