Lanthanum Nickelates with a Perovskite Structure as Protective Coatings on Metallic Interconnects for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

  • An interconnect is the key component of solid oxide fuel cells that electrically connects unit cells and separates fuel from oxidant in the adjoining cells. To improve their surface stability in high-temperature oxidizing environments, metallic interconnects are usually coated with conductive oxides. In this study, lanthanum nickelates ($LaNiO_3$) with a perovskite structure are synthesized and applied as protective coatings on a metallic interconnect (Crofer 22 APU). The partial substitution of Co, Cu, and Fe for Ni improves electrical conductivity as well as thermal expansion match with the Crofer interconnect. The protective perovskite layers are fabricated on the interconnects by a slurry coating process combined with optimized heat-treatment. The perovskite-coated interconnects show area-specific resistances as low as $16.5-37.5m{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ at $800^{\circ}C$.

  • Solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) is an electrochemical energy conversion system with high efficiency and low-emission of pollution. In order to reduce the operating temperature of SOFC system under $800^{\circ}C$, the thickness reduction of YSZ electrolyte to be as thin as possible, e.g., less than 10 ${\mu}m$ are considered with the microstructure control and optimum design of unit cell. Methods for reducing the thickness of YSZ electrolyte have been investigated in coin cell. Moreover, a large unit cell($8cm{\times}8cm$) for SOFC was fabricated using an anode-supported electrolyte assembly with a thinner electrolyte layer, which was prepared by a tape casting method with a co-sintering technique. we studied the design factors such as active layer, electrolyte thickness, cathode composition, etc,. by the coin type of unit cell ahead of the fabrication process of a large unit cell and also reviewed about the evaluation technique of a large size unit cell such as interconnect design, sealing materials and current collector and so forth. Electrochemical evaluations of the unit cells, including measurements such as power density and impedance, were performed and analyzed. Maximum power density and polarization impedance of coin cell were 0.34W/$cm^2$ and $0.45{\Omega}cm^2$ at $800^{\circ}C$, respectively. However, Maxium power density of a large unit cell($5cm{\times}5cm$) decreased to 0.21W/$cm^2$ at $800^{\circ}C$ due to the increase of ohmic resistance. However, It was found that the potential value of a large unit cell loaded by 0.22A/$cm^2$ showed 0.76V at 100hrs without the degradation of unit cell.

  • GHG 및 대기오염물질 배출 규제는 고효율 및 친환경에 적합한 새로운 선박용 동력장치의 필요성을 제기하고 있다. 최근 이와 같은 문제들을 근본적으로 해결하기 위한 지속가능한 방법으로서 연료전지를 선박의 동력발생장치로 도입하고자 하는 검토가 진행되고 있다. 본 논문은 액체연료인 메탄올을 기반으로 한 고체산화물형 연료전지시스템의 성능 특성을 분석한 것으로 공기극 입구온도 일정의 조건에서 스택의 작동온도, 전류밀도, S/C, 수소연료 이용률의 영향을 시뮬레이션으로 검토하고 있으며, 그 결과를 기체연료인 메탄의 경우와 비교하고 있다.

  • The solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are the one of the most promising energy conversion devices which can directly convert chemical energy into electric power with high efficiency and low emission. The lowering operating temperature below 800 ℃ has been considered as the mostly considerable research and development for commercialization. The major issue is to maintain reasonably high performance of SOFCs at reduced temperatures due to increment of polarization resistance of electrodes and electrolyte. Thus, the alternative materials with high catalytic activities and fast oxygen ion conductivity are required. For recent advances in electrolyte materials and technology, newly designed, highly conductive electrolyte materials and structural engineering of them provide a new path for further reduction in ohmic polarization resistance from electrolytes. Here, a powerful strategy of the bilayer concept with various oxide electrolytes of SOFCs are briefly reviewed. These recent developments also highlight the need for electrolytes with greater conductivity to achieve a high performance, thus providing a useful guidance for the rational design of cell structures for SOFCs. Moreover, cell design, materials compatibility, processing methods, are discussed, along with their role in determining cell performance. Results from state-of-the-art SOFCs are presented, and future prospects are discussed.

  • High temperature co-electrolysis of H2O-CO2 mixtures using solid oxide cells has attracted attention as promising CO2 utilization technology for production of syngas (H2/CO), feedstock for E-fuel synthesis. For direct supply to E-fuel production such as hydrocarbon and methanol, the outlet gas ratio (H2/CO/CO2) of co-electrolysis should be controlled. In this work, current voltage characteristic test and product gas analysis were carried out under various reaction conditions which could attain proper syngas ratio.

  • GHG 및 대기오염물질 배출 규제는 고효율 및 친환경에 적합한 새로운 선박용 동력장치의 필요성을 제기하고 있다. 최근 이와 같은 문제들을 근본적으로 해결하기 위한 지속가능한 방법으로서 연료전지를 선박의 동력발생장치로 도입하고자 하는 검토가 진행되고 있다. 본 논문은 액체연료인 메탄올을 기반으로 한 고체산화물형 연료전지/가스터빈 하이브리드시스템의 성능을 평가한 것으로 스택의 작동온도, 전류밀도, 가스터빈 압력비, 공기예열기 온도효율, TIT(turbine inlet temperature)의 영향을 시뮬레이션으로 검토하고 그 결과를 기체연료인 메탄의 경우와 비교하고 있다.

  • 본 연구에서는 저온형 연료전지와 고온형 연료전지의 작동 및 구성 요소 측면 단점들을 보완하기 위해 중온 영역에서 작동하는 박막 연료전지를 제작하였다. 박막 연료전지는 이트륨이 도핑된 바륨 지르코네이트(BYZ) 전해질과 백금 수소극/공기극으로 이루어져 있으며, 성능은 $350^{\circ}C$에서 측정하였다. 350nm의 두께를 가지는 백금 수소극은 다공성 기판 위에 스퍼터링 기법을 이용하여 증착하였다. BYZ전해질은 펄스레이저 기법을 이용하여 $1{\mu}m$ 증착하였고, 상부에 스퍼터링 기법을 이용하여 200nm의 두께를 가지는 백금 공기극을 증착하였다. 개회로 전압은 약 0.81V이었고, 최대 출력 성능은 11.9mW/$cm^2$이었다.

졸-겔 코팅에 의한 저온형 고체산화물 연료저지용 전해질막의 합성 및 특성 (Synthesis of Electrolyte Films for Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells by Sol-Gel Coating and Their Characteristics)

  • Characteristics of composite electrolytes which were prepared by coating a thin film of YSZ (yttria sta-bilized zirconia : (ZrO2)0.92 (Y2O3)0.08) on YDC (yttria doped ceria : Ce0.8Y0.2O1.9) with mixed conductivity have been investigated in order to develop the low-temperature solid oxide fuel cell. The thickness (t) of spin-coated YSZ thin films after the heat-treatment at 600$^{\circ}C$ was increased proportionally to the sol con-centrations (C) while the decrease in its thickness with the spin rate ($\omega$) could be expressed in the e-quation of ln t=9.49-0.53 ln $\omega$(0.99mol//s sol conc.) When the sol concentration and the spin rate being less than 0.99 mol/l and higher than 1000 rpm respectively reliable YSZ/YDC composite electrolytes could be obtained by multi-coating although several micro-cracks were observed in singly coated YSZ film surfaces. The dense YSZ film with a 1$\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness was prepared by coating of 0.99 mol/l YSZ sol five-times at 2000 rpm followed by heat-treatment at 1400$^{\circ}C$ for 2h, The adhesion between YSZ film and YDC substrate was found to be very good. The open circuit voltages of H2/O2 single cell with YSZ/YDC composite electrolytes were 0.79∼0.82 V at 800$^{\circ}C$ and 0.75∼0.77V at 900$^{\circ}C$ The open circuit voltage was inversely proportioned to the thickness ratio of YSZ thin film (1$\mu\textrm{m}$) to YDC substrate(0.28-2.22 mm)

Ag 집전체를 적용한 평판형 SOFC 단전지 (Single Cell Stacked Planar Type SOFC Assembled Using a Ag-Current Collector)

  • Current collectors of SOFC play a significant role on the performance of power generation. In this study a single cell stacked SOFC was assembled using Ag-mesh as a cathode current collector, and evaluated its performance. No gas leakages of the single cell stack occurred in the tests of gas detection and OCV measurement. The OCV and initial power of the stack were 1.09V and $0.45W/cm^2$, respectively, under the flow rates of air at 2,500 cc/min and $H_2$ at 1,000 cc/min at the test temperature of $750^{\circ}C$. A degradation rate of 44.0% was measured during the prolonged time of 307 h. The relatively low durability of the tested single cell stack was found to be the evaporation of Ag-mesh at the current corrector.

나노기공성 기판을 사용한 산화물박막의 제조 (Fabrication of Oxide Thin Films Using Nanoporous Substrates)

  • 현재까지 개발되어 온 고체산화물 연료전지는 전해질로 사용되는 산소이온전도성 산화물의 저온에서의 낮은 전도도로 인해 그 사용영역이 제한되어 왔으며, 기판재료가 연료가스 확산층으로 사용되어야 한다는 점 때문에 저온작동을 위한 박막화 역시 명확한 한계를 가지고 있다. 이러한 문제점은 고도의 평활도를 갖는 균일한 나노기공성 기판재를 도입함으로써 해결될 수 있으며, 본 연구에서는 나노기공성 기판에 비정질 금속박막을 증착/산화하는 방안을 제시한다. 초박막형 성공정으로서, 산화 후 산소이온전도성 산화물을 구성하는 합금 타겟을 장착한 DC-magnetron sputter를 사용하여 $20{\sim}200nm$의 기공크기를 갖는 나노기공성 양극산화 알루미나 기판에 비정질 금속합금막을 형성하여 산화/열처리 과정을 거쳐 초박막 산화물 전해질의 제조공정을 실현하였다. 얻어진 박막의 가스투과특성, 입자/입계의 관찰, 상전이에 따른 결정구조/미세구조변화를 관찰하여 초박막 증착 및 전해질의 나노구조제어에 필요한 제반 기본물성데이터를 확보하였다.
