This paper describes evaluation of oxidation stability for diesel engine oils by Hot-tube oxidation tester at high temperature. Evaluation was rated by visual inspection of lacquer in capillary glass tube and TAN determination of used oil. Air, NO$_2$-air and SO$_2$-air mixed gases were used as oxidizing gas. One oil which has low oxidation stability is selected and reformulated by addition of some additives such as antioxidant, detergent and disperant to improve oxidation stability. As a results of reformulation, antioxidant and detergent was effective for improvement of high temperture oxidation stability on diesel engine oil.
Anisotropic mesophase carbon fiber(AMCFs) was exposed to isothermal oxidation in air and $CO_2$atmosphere, and burn-off rates have measured by TGA. The microstructure changes of oxidized carbon fibers, were observed by SEM. It was observed that oxidation rate in the air is over 100 times faster than that in $CO_2$atmosphere. The activation energy obtained in air was about 43.4 Kcal/mole in the temperature range of $600∼800^{\circ}C$, and in $CO_2$was about 55.2 Kcal/mole in the temperature range of $950∼1200^{\circ}C$. Therefore, the oxidation reaction in both atmospheres was under chemical reaction regime in the above temperature ranges. It was shown that the oxidation of the AMCFs is initiated at the end of fibers at high temperature($1100^{\circ}C$) with developing the large pores, and the small pores are developed on the fiber surface at low temperature($900^{\circ}C$). In conclusion, the oxidation of the AMCFs is progressed through the imperfection.
The effects of oxidation behavior on the hot ductility of plain carbon steels were investigated at various temperatures in order to simulate the continuous casting process more precisely, in which the process undergoes in air atmosphere rather than Ar atmosphere. The high temperature oxidation behavior and scale morphology of the carbon steels exposed to the air and Ar atmosphere at various temperatures were also investigated in order to assess the mechanism of the RA value decreasing in an air atmosphere. The RA values obtained from the air atmosphere were marked below 45% by the test temperature, except for over 1000${^{\circ}C}$, with the RA values remaining in low values in both the low and high temperature region, at which the RA values generally recovered in the Ar atmosphere. The surface roughness of the specimen was developed by external and internal oxidation when the specimen was deformed in an air atmosphere at high temperature, with the result being the stress concentrated at the roughness of the specimen surface, resulting in low RA values. The hot ductility in the air atmosphere was found to be likely controlled by the oxidation rate instead of the microstructures corresponding to test temperatures.
The MarM247 based superalloy (8wt.%Cr- 9wt.%Co- 3wt.%Ta- 1.5wt.%Hf- 5.6%wt.Al- 9.5wt.%W- Bal. Ni) specimens were diffusion aluminized by for types of pack cementation methods, and their coating structure and their high temperature oxidation resistance were investigated. The coated specimens treated at 973K in high aluminum concentration pack had a coating layer containing large hafunium rich precipitates, which were originally included in substrate alloy. After the high temperature oxidation test in air containing 30 vol.% $H_2O$ at 1273K ~ 323K, the deep localized corrosion which reached to the substrate were observed along with these hafnium rich precipitates. On the other hand, the coated specimens treated at 1323K using low aluminum concentration pack showed the coating layer without the large hafunium rich precipitates, and after the high temperature oxidation test at 1273K for 1800 ksec, it did not show the deep localized corrosion. The nickel electroplating before the aluminizing forms thick hafnium free area, and its high temperature oxidation resistance were comparable to platinum modified aluminizing coatings at 1273K.
Reduction of NOx in emission gas, improvement of engine efficiency, and extension of warranty period has made demands for developing materials more corrosively resistant to the inner-muffler environments or predicting the lifetime of materials used in muffler more precisely. The corrosion inside muffler has been explained with condensate corrosion mainly though thermal oxidation experiences prior to condensate corrosion. Hence, the aim of this study is to describe how the thermal oxidation affects the corrosion of stainless steel exposed to the inner-muffler environments. Auger electron spectroscopy and electrochemical tests were employed to analyze oxide scale and to evaluate corrosion resistance, respectively. Thermal oxidation has different role of condensate corrosion depending on the temperature: inhibiting condensate corrosion below $380^{\circ}C$ and enhancing condensate corrosion above $380^{\circ}C$. The low temperature oxidation causes to form compact oxide layer functioning a barrier for penetrating condensate into a matrix. Although though thermal oxidation caused chromium-depleted layer between oxide layer and matrix, the enhancement of the condensate corrosion in high temperature oxidation resulted from corrosion-induced crevice formed by oxide scale rather than corrosion in chromium-depleted layer. It was proved by aids of anodic polarization tests and measurements of pitting corrosion potentials. By the study, the role of high temperature oxidation layer affecting the condensate corrosion of stainless steels used as muffler materials was well understood.
The B2-ordered NiAl has attracted much attention as one of the candidates as a next generation high temperature material, because it has a high melting temperature, a low specific gravity and an excellent high temperature oxidation resistance. However, the application of NiAl to structural materials needs the improvement of its brittleness at room temperature. The study was carried out on the relation between several properties of NiAl and some variation of Ni content within NiAl phase, which means deviations from the stoichiometric composition. The main results were as follows; (i) Good ductility was obtained at the testing temperature more than 1073 K irrespective of Ni content. (ii) Increasing Ni content offered preferable tensile properties. (iii) Every NiAl with varying Ni contents showed the superior oxidation resistance.
Hot-rolled steel plates of SPHC and SS400 were oxidized at 600, 750 and $900^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr in air. With an increase in the oxidation temperature, their oxidation rates increased, and this was accompanied by the formation of pores and cracks in the thickened oxide scales, which were non-adherent. SPHC steels manufactured by either an arc furnace or a blast furnace displayed similar oxidation rates, indicating that their oxidation rates were insensitive to the manufacturing process. Medium-carbon SS400 steel displayed somewhat faster oxidation rates than low-carbon SS400 steel, indicating that the carbon content did not significantly influence the oxidation rates.
In this study, we devoted to kinetic measurement of the catalytic oxidation of iron-containing flame soot particles and better understanding the role of catalytic particles on carbon oxidation in particular at low temperature, targeting on autothermal regeneration of diesel particulate filter by diesel exhaust gas. Carbon-based Fe-containing particles generated by spraying ferrocene-doped diesel fuel in an oxy-hydrogen flame are tested and compared with a commercial carbon black powder for thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Induced coupled plasma-Atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), and High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). As a result, we found that a small amount of the ferrocene addition led to significant reductions in a on-set temperature and an activation energy of the carbon oxidation as well. An oxygenated surface complex forming at the particle surface could be thought as active species that would be readily consumed in particular at low temperature.
We investigated the interface defect engineering and reaction mechanism of reduced transition layer and nitride layer in the active plasma process on 4H-SiC by the plasma reaction with the rapid processing time at the room temperature. Through the combination of experiment and theoretical studies, we clearly observed that advanced active plasma process on 4H-SiC of oxidation and nitridation have improved electrical properties by the stable bond structure and decrease of the interfacial defects. In the plasma oxidation system, we showed that plasma oxide on SiC has enhanced electrical characteristics than the thermally oxidation and suppressed generation of the interface trap density. The decrease of the defect states in transition layer and stress induced leakage current (SILC) clearly showed that plasma process enhances quality of $SiO_2$ by the reduction of transition layer due to the controlled interstitial C atoms. And in another processes, the Plasma Nitridation (PN) system, we investigated the modification in bond structure in the nitride SiC surface by the rapid PN process. We observed that converted N reacted through spontaneous incorporation the SiC sub-surface, resulting in N atoms converted to C-site by the low bond energy. In particular, electrical properties exhibited that the generated trap states was suppressed with the nitrided layer. The results of active plasma oxidation and nitridation system suggest plasma processes on SiC of rapid and low temperature process, compare with the traditional gas annealing process with high temperature and long process time.
Pd catalyst have been used in hydrogenation, oxidation, and low temperature combustion reaction. Recently, it has been candidated as a possible reagents in the partial oxidation of methanol reformers of the fuel cell. Pd catalysts, even though it is very precious and expensive, catalytic functioning is good, but it still need to be improved in the matter of durability and low catalytic activity after calcination. In this study, we synthesize the improved Pd catalyst and study their chemical functioning.
