  • In this paper, we propose a new AC-DC converter control method to comply with harmonics regulation(IEC 61000-3) effective for the inverter system of an air conditioner whose power consumption is less than 2,500W. There are many different ways of AC-DC converter control, but this paper focuses on the converter control method that is adopting an input reactor with low cost silicon steel core to strengthen cost competitiveness of the manufacturer. The proposed control method controls input current every half cycle of the line frequency to get unit power factor and at the same time to reduce switching loss of devices and acoustic noise from reactor. This kind of converter is known as a Partial Switching Converter(PSC). In this study, theoretical analysis of the PSC has been performed using Matlab/Simulink while a 16-bit micro-processor based converter has been used to perform the experimental analysis. In the theoretical analysis, electrical circuit models and equations of the PSC are derived and simulated. In the experiments, micro-processor controls input current to keep the power factor above 0.95 by reducing the phase difference between input voltage and current and at the same time to maintain a reference DC-link voltage against voltage drop which depends on DC-link load. Therefore it becomes possible to comply with harmonic regulations while the power factor is maximized by optimizing the time of current flow through the input reactor for every half cycle of line frequency.

  • In this paper, a new kind of wideband, low-loss composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line (TL) and a Wilkinson power divider are presented. The TL is composed of a parallel meander inductor and a series cutting capacitor based on coplanar waveguide (CPW) structure. The power divider is designed by substituting the CRLH-TL into the conventional transmission line. The experiment results show that the TL has a good agreement with the desired results, exhibiting the return losses under 12 dB from 8.4 GHz to 34.4 GHz. The operating frequencies of the power divider are 12.05 GHz to 13.15 GHz and 16.50 GHz to 19.30 GHz, respectively. The 20 dB bandwidths are 8.9 % and 17.9 %, respectively. Typical experimental measurements are conducted and compared with the simulated results.

  • In LTE-Advanced systems, every sector uses the entire range of the frequency resource, and when the UEs are located at a cell edge, user throughputs degrade due to the interferences from the adjacent cells. In this paper, we propose a combined scheme for inter-cell interference avoidance and power control. In the proposed algorithm, the sectors consist of the right edge, the left edge and the center for resource allocation and we control the transmission power to improve the user throughputs at the edge of each cell. Using a system level simulation, we analyze low 5th percentile and average user throughputs of the UEs who are located the cell, center and edge when the inter-cell interference avoidance and the power control are combined.

  • The parking management system can increase driver's convenience with detailed parking information service in the parking lot. At the same time, parking management system consumes non-negligible electrical energy with large amount of sensors, displays and control modules. With the increase in the demand for green and sustainable building design all over the world, it becomes a meaningful issue for parking management system to reduce operating power. This paper presents the preliminary design and estimated results of a parking management system which is optimized to reduce the power consumption mainly on detectors and displays. The system design is based on pre-developed wireless parking detectors, Park Tile and Park Disk. The system has a number of parking space detectors, vehicle count detectors, information displays, guidance terminals and other control units. We have performed system architecture design, communication network design, parking information service scenario planning, battery life regulation and at last operating power estimation. The estimated operating power was 0.93KW per parking-slot, which is 20% of traditional systems. The estimated annual maintenance cost was 18% of traditional systems.

  • This paper proposes transmit power control techniques with fading channel prediction scheme based on recurrent neural network for high-speed mobile communication systems. The operation result of recurrent neural network which is derived interpretively solves complexity problems of neural network circuit, and channel gain of multiple transmit antenna is derived with maximum ratio combining(MRC) by using the operation result, and this channel gain control transmit power of each antenna. simulation results show that proposed method has a outstanding performance compared to method that is not to be controlled power based on channel prediction. Most of legacy studies are for robust receive technique of fading signals or channel prediction of fading signals limited low-speed mobility, but in open loop Power control, proposed channel prediction method decrease system complexity with removal of fading effect in transmitter.

  • In this paper, we propose new multiuser detectors (MUDs) based on compressed sensing approaches for the large-scale multiple antenna systems equipped with dozens of low-power antennas. We consider the scenarios where the number of receiver antennas is smaller than the total number of users, but the number of active users is relatively small. This prior information motivates sparsity-embracing MUDs such as sparsity-embracing linear/nonlinear MUDs where the detection of active users and their symbol detection are employed. In addition, sparsity-embracing MUDs with maximum a posteriori probability criterion (MAP-MUDs) are presented. They jointly detect active users and their symbols by exploiting the probability of user activity, and it can be solved efficiently by introducing convex relaxing senses. Furthermore, it is shown that sparsity-embracing MUDs exploiting common users' activity across multiple symbols, i.e., frame-by-frame, can be considered to improve performance. Also, in multiple multiple-input and multiple-output networks with aggressive frequency reuse, we propose the interference cancellation strategy for the proposed sparsity-embracing MUDs. That first cancels out the interference induced by adjacent networks and then recovers the desired users' information by exploiting the low user activity. In simulation studies for binary phase shift keying modulation, numerical evidences establish the effectiveness of our proposed MUDs exploiting low user activity, as compared with the conventional MUD.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the short circuit current of a low voltage direct current distribution system. For the analysis, we performed the modeling of the low voltage direct current distribution system with a 6-pulse three-phase thyristor rectifier using the PSCAD/EMTDC, surveyed impedance of sources, transformers and distribution lines to run a simulation. A result of the simulation is that short circuit currents of the direct current distribution system with the rectifier decreased due to a thyristor-ON-resistance(Ron). But in case of the low thyristor-ON resistance, output fault current of the rectifier increased over three-phase short circuit current of an AC power system without a rectifier by regular ratio of the rectifier. Because the output fault current of the rectifier can increase over interrupting the capacity of circuit breakers, studying short circuit currents of a low voltage direct current distribution system with a rectifier is necessary for introducing the direct current distribution systems.

  • This study presents a power and Physical Resource Blocks (PRBs) joint allocation algorithm to coordinate uplink (UL) interference in the device-to-device (D2D) underlaying Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) networks. The objective is to find a mechanism to mitigate the UL interference between the two subsystems and maximize the weighted sum throughput as well. This optimization problem is formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) which is further decomposed into PRBs assignment and transmission power allocation. Specifically, the scenario of applying imperfect channel state information (CSI) is also taken into account in our study. Analysis reveals that the proposed PRBs allocation strategy is energy efficient and it suppresses the interference not only suffered by the LTE-A system but also to the D2D users. In another side, a low-complexity technique is proposed to obtain the optimal power allocation which resides in one of at most three feasible power vectors. Simulations show that the optimal power allocation combined with the proposed PRBs assignment achieves a higher weighted sum throughput as compared to traditional algorithms even when imperfect CSI is utilized.

  • SnO thin films were fabricated by rf reactive sputtering on borosilicate substrates with an Sn target and Ar/$O_2$ gas mixture. The effect of rf power on the structural, electrical, and optical properties of SnO thin films was investigated with XRD, AFM, SEM, Hall effect measurements, and UV-Vis spectrometer. As a plasma power increased the crystallinity with a preferred orientation of SnO thin films was improved and the grain size slightly increased. However the grains were coalesced and excessively irregular in shape. The electrical conductivity of SnO thin films demonstrated a relatively low p-type conductivity of 0.024 $(Wcm)^{-1}$ at a higher power condition. Lastly, SnO thin films had poor optical transmittance in the visible range as a plasma power increased.

  • In this paper, a DSP-based test apparatus for Control Rod Drive Mechanism (CRDM) that is used in nuclear power plants is described. Using this apparatus, we can test the mechanical and electrical characteristics of CRDM and obtain some information about how to improve the CRDM further and how to design a power controller to actuate the CRDM. Since firing angles can be directly applied to the gate-drive circuits of thyristors in the power controller by using this apparatus, the maximum and minimum values of firing angles within available limits are easily measured. Also step-current inputs help us investigate each coil's response characteristics. Therefore, we can easily find the range of control gains which enables a stable CRDM operation in insertion and withdrawal actions at high speed, mid speed, and low speed. Since this apparatus has a test mode in which an insertion or withdrawal action is divided into several phases so that the current command for each phase is given step by step, we may judge whether the CRDM works as expected or not. We also describe a fault detection capability of the test apparatus for the power controller by using discrete Fourier transform.
