While the use of battery-powered embedded systems has been rapidly increasing, the current level of battery technology has not kept up with the drastic increase in power consumption by the system. In order to prolong system usage time, the battery size needs to be increased. The amounts of power consumption by embedded systems are determined by their hardware configuration and software for manipulating hardware resources. In spite of that, the hardware provides features for lowering power consumption, if those cannot be utilized efficiently by software including operating system, reduction in power consumption is not optimized. In this paper, we propose a BET(Break Even Time)-based scheduling method using task partition to reduce power consumption of multimedia applications in a mobile embedded system environment.

Over the past several years, the application extent of the real-time systems is being expanded with the progress of civilization. An effort to minimize power consumption at the system is being accomplished in several fields from the design of an analog/digital circuit up to the device level Things of this effort have included the power optimum-technique to minimize power consumption at the digital logic circuit and the dynamic managed skill by means o( the decision of the operating system. In this paper, we designed of low power system by using Power-optimized method. As an effective low-power design, we designed the low power system which it has a monitoring system within the main board and a personal computer.

A system-on-a-chip communication architecture has a significant impact on the performance and power consumption of modern multi-processors system-on-chips (MPSoCs). However, customization of such architecture for a specific application requires the exploration of a large design space. Thus, system designers need tools to rapidly explore and evaluate communication architectures. In this paper we present the method for application-specific low-power bus architecture synthesis at system-level. Our paper has two contributions. First, we build a bus power model of AMBA AXI bus communication architecture. Second, we incorporate this power model into a low-power architecture exploration algorithm that enables system designers to rapidly explore the target bus architecture. The proposed exploration algorithm reduces power consumption by 20.1% compared to a maximally connected reduced matrix, and the area is also reduced by 20.2% compared to the maximally connected reduced matrix.

A novel low-power synchronization technique is presented for the local synchronization. Since the proposed technique transmits an enable signal instead of a clock signal which consumes large power, it can considerably reduce the power consumption. The source-synchronization scheme which is widely adopted for the local synchronization is compared with the proposed technique. It is shown that the proposed low-power synchronization technique provides approximately 50% power saving.

In this paper, novel power-aware motion estimation is proposed for low-power multimedia communication. In the video compression, motion estimation dominates the total power consumption, where better performance usually requires more power consumption. Among several motion estimation algorithms with different performance and power, the proposed motion estimation adaptively selects the optimal algorithm during run-time, considering the trade-off between performance and power. The proposed motion estimation can be easily applied to various motion estimation algorithms with negligible computation or hardware overhead. According to simulation results, the proposed motion estimation reduces the power consumption to 1/15.7~1/5.6 without performance degradation, when compared to the conventional algorithms.
Advanced mobile communication devices require a bright, high information content display in a small, light-weight, low power consumption package. In this paper we will outline our progress towards developing such a low power consumption active-matrix flexible OLED ($FOLED^{TM}$) display. Our work in this area is focused on three critical enabling technologies. The first is the development of a high efficiency long-lived phosphorescent OLED ($PHOLED{TM}$) device technology, which has now proven itself to be capable of meeting the low power consumption performance requirements for mobile display applications. Secondly, is the development of flexible active matrix backplanes, and for this our team are employing poly-Si TFTs formed on metal foil substrates as this approach represents an attractive alternative to fabricating poly-Si TFTs on plastic for the realization of first generation flexible active matrix OLED displays. Unlike most plastics, metal foil substrates can withstand a large thermal load and do not require a moisture and oxygen permeation barrier. Thirdly, the key to reliable operation is to ensure that the organic materials are fully encapsulated in a package designed for repetitive flexing. We also present progress in operational lifetime of encapsulated T-PHOLED pixels on planarized metal foil and discuss PHOLED encapsulation strategy.

This paper presents the characteristics of low consumption, high-response time hot-film type micro-flowsensors with SOI(Si-on-insulator) and trench structures. Output voltages increased due to increase of heat-loss from sensor to external. Compared with no-trench on the SOI structure, the micro-flowsensors with trench structures have properties of high output voltage and low consume power. Output voltage of micro-flowsensors with SOI and trench structures was 250 mV at $N_2$ flow rate of 2000 sccm/min, heating power of 0.3 W. The response time was about 85 msec when input flow was step-input.
In this paper, we propose a high-speed, low-power complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) binary image sensor featuring a gate/body-tied (GBT) p-channel metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (PMOSFET)-type photodetector based on a double-tail comparator. The GBT photodetector forms a structure in which the floating gate (n+ polysilicon) and body of the PMOSFET are tied, and amplifies the photocurrent generated by incident light. The double-tail comparator compares the output signal of a pixel against a reference voltage and returns a binary signal, and it exhibits improved power consumption and processing speed compared with those of a conventional two-stage comparator. The proposed sensor has the advantages of a high signal processing speed and low power consumption. The proposed CMOS binary image sensor was designed and fabricated using a standard 0.18 ㎛ CMOS process.

In this paper, we propose a design of microwave motion detector using X-band doppler radar sensor to minimize the power consumption. To minimize the power consumption and implement battery operated system, pulse input with 2 KHz, 4% duty cycle is exerted on the doppler radar sensor. In order to simplify the process of working with ATmega2560 microcontroller unit, Arduino compatible board is designed and implemented. Arduino is open source hardware and many library software is published as open source tools. Smartphone app is also proposed and designed as a real-time user interface of the motion detector. The SQLite database on the Android mobile operating system is used for recording raw data of motion detection for post-processing job, such as fast Fourier transform (FFT). Bluetooth interface module is implemented on the motion detection board as a wireless communication interface to the smartphone. The speed of human movement is identified by post-processing FFT.

Hybrid car can improve fuel efficiency using a power of motor that is generated during constant-speed or deceleration driving. The motor is located between engine and transmission. But, when voltage of main battery is low, fuel efficiency is low because the voltage can't run the motor. In this situation, this study observed fuel efficiency when using solar cell for assistance power. In order to verify a fuel consumption of hybrid car equipped solar cell for assistance power, the car was tested downtown driving. As hybrid car was equipped solar cell for assistance, fuel consumption was reduced 8.35 % at running air conditioner. And, at air conditioner doesn't work, fuel consumption was reduced 6.88 %. This point of view, CO2 is expected to reduce in similar proportion.
