Numerical Analysis of an Arc Plasma in a DC Electric Furnace

  • In order to analyze the heat transfer phenomena in the plasma flames, a mathematical model describing heat and fluid flow in an electric arc has been developed and used to predict heat transfer from the arc to the steel bath in a DC Electric Arc Furnace. The arc model takes the separate contributions to the heat transfer from each involved mechanism onto account, that is radiation, convection and energy transported by electrons. The finite volume method and a SIMPLE algorithm are used for solving the governing MHD equations, that are conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy together with the equations describing a standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model for turbulence. The model predicts heat transfer for different currents and arc lengths. Finally these calculation results can be used as a useful insight into plasma phenomena of the industrial-scale electric arc furnace. From these results, it can be concluded that higher arc current and longer arc length give high heat transfer

  • We have applied spectroscopic ellipsometry to investigate $high-{\kappa}$ dielectric thin films and correlate their optical properties with fabrication processes, in particular, with high temperature annealing. The use of high-k dielectrics such as $HfO_{2}$, $Ta_{2}O_{5}$, $TiO_{2}$, and $ZrO_{2}$ as the replacement for $SiO_{2}$ as the gate dielectric in CMOS devices has received much attention recently due to its high dielectric constant. From the characteristics found in the pseudo-dielectric functions or the Tauc-Lorentz dispersions, the optical properties such as optical band gap, polycrystallization, and optical density will be discussed.

  • 리니어 모터 중에서 위치 정밀도가 우수하고 개루프 제어가 가능한 리니어 펄스모터(LPM : Linear Pulse Motor)에 대해 추력 성능 및 위치제어 정밀도 향상을 위해서 자기등가회로 모델링법에 의해 추력을 주로 계산하고 있다. 퍼미언스(Permeance) 모델법, 수치해석법(FEM), 속도 기전력법 등을 이용하여 자속밀도(B)를 구하는데 있어 해석적인 추력편차가 존재한다. 정확한 추력을 구하기 위해서는 이들 각각의 방법을 이용한 로렌츠 포스법(Lorentz Force Method), 자기수반 에너지법, Maxwell 응력법 등으로 추력을 계산하여 비교함으로써 모터용량, 파라미터 등의 각종 성능 비교시 중요 요소가 될 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 위의 방법으로 LPM의 추력을 수식화하여 값을 얻고, 실제 추력값을 측정하여 얻어진 값과 비교 분석하고자한다. 이러므로 보다 정확한 LPM 추력 계산 방법을 얻을 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

  • In this paper, the electrolyte flow treatment is suggested using together with needle and magnet. On account of Lorentz force law, we can not only induce the circulation of body fluids at specific hurt but also apply on the treatment of cell membrane voltage control controlling the electrolyte flow. If electric field is added to human body fluid, electrolyte and then magnetic field is taken by magnet, we can induce local region flow through needle, global region flow with artificial electrical field and magnetic field. Electrolyte flow is excellent treatment in clinical treatment.

  • 가스차단기의 성능은 노즐재질, 접점분리 속도 차단기의 치수 그리고 마크시간 등에 좌우되며 이러한 일련의 현상을 고찰하기 위한 유동현상을 모의하기 위해서는 기본적으로 두 접점의 상대운동 및 접점 사이에서 발생하는 아크 플라즈마(arc plasma)에 의한 전도, 대류, 복사현상 뿐만 아니라 아크전류에 의한 로랜츠힘(Lorentz's force), 용삭(ablation)에 의한 화학작용 등과 같은 매우 복잡한 물리적 현상을 고려해야 한다. 본 연구에서는 차단과정 중 대전류 영역에서의 아크특성과 마크에서 방출되는 강한 복사에너지에 의해 발생하는 PTFE 증기에 의한 영향을 고려하기 위해서 상용 CFD 프로그램인 PHOENICS에 아크 모델링과 고온에서의 $SF_6$-PTFE 혼합가스의 물성치 대입을 위한 보조 프로그램을 작성하여 해석을 수행하였다.

  • This investigation suggests a new non-contact type sensor that can measure flexural vibrations of a non-ferromagnetic pipe. The sensor works on the reversed Lorentz force mechanism; however, anti-symmetric bias magnetic field suggested in this work should be applied to measure bending vibration of a non-ferromagnetic pipe. The importance of the suggested magnetic field is verified by a series of experiments. The sensor is applied to the bending vibration measurement and modal testing of an aluminum pipe and shows satisfactory working performance compared to others.

  • Theory of minimal surfaces has always been in the center of differential geometry. The most difficult part in minimal surfaces is how to find meaningful examples. In this paper we survey the history of search for minimal surfaces. We also introduce examples of recently emerging maximal surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski space and compare the processes in the search for the minimal and the maximal surfaces.

  • The authors designed a high temperature superconductor (HTS) racetrack coil for a 10 MW class superconducting synchronous wind turbine generator. The designed HTS racetrack coil was analyzed by an electromagnetic finite element method (FEM) to determine the magnetic field distribution, inductance, stress, etc. This paper describes the stress analysis and structure design result of the HTS racetrack coil for 10 MW class superconducting synchronous wind turbine generators, considering orthotropic material properties, a large magnetic field, and the resulting Lorentz force effect. Insulated HTS racetrack coils and no-insulation HTS racetrack coils were also considered. According to the results of the stress analysis, the no-insulation HTS racetrack coil results were better than the insulated HTS racetrack coil results.

  • Electron mobility which is a basic parameter to represent gas state, is calcurated using equation assumed Lorentz gas. This equation is applied to 30mm 20W fluorescent lamp. In order to obtain electric field strength of positive column, lamp and cathode fall voltage wave form is measuread using indirect voltage measuring methode. To obtain electron density, used the calculation of S.C Peek and D.E Spencer. The result which is applaied 38mm fluorescent lamp at 400mA, $20^{\circ}C$ is displayed.

Gimballing Flywheel and its Novel Reluctance Force-type Magnetic Bearing with Low Eddy Loss and Slight Tilting Torque

  • For magnetically suspended flywheel (MSFW) with gimballing capability, demerits of Lorentz force-type magnetic bearings and common reluctance force-type magnetic bearings are analyzed, a novel reluctance forcetype magnetic bearing (RFMB) including radial and axial magnetic bearing units with 4 separate biased permanent magnets and two conical stators is presented. By equivalent magnetic circuits' method, its magnetic properties are analyzed. To reduce the eddy loss, it was designed as radial poles with shoes and its rotor made of Iron-based amorphousness. Although the uniformity of magnetic flux density in the conical air gap determines mainly the additional tilting torque, the maximum additional tilting torques is 0.05Nm and the rotor tilting has no influence on its forces when the rotor tilts or the maximum changes does not exceed 14% when the rotor drifts and tilts simultaneously. The MSFW with this RFMB can meet the maneuvering requirement of spacecraft theoretically.
