Current status, challenges and the way forward for dairy goat production in Asia - conference summary of dairy goats in Asia

  • Asia hosts more than half of the world's 1 billion goats and is also where domestication of wild goats began. Goats, including dairy goats, are adapted to a wide variety of harsh environments and thus play key roles as providers of nutrition, food security and socio-economic status to their human owners in many low-income Asian countries. In many countries in Southeast and East Asia, medium and large scale commercial dairy goat farming can be profitable enterprises because of the high price of goat milk, and good demand due to its health and medicinal properties. In some Asian countries, dairy goats play important roles in non-commercial activities, including use as educational animals in elementary schools in Japan and show animals in Indonesia. Dairy goat farmers in Asia are faced with numerous challenges, such as a shortage of high producing animals adapted to the local environment, lack of quality feeds during a prolonged dry season, many diseases and difficulty getting their product to market, however, the increasing demand for goat milk in the newly developed and developed economies in Asia provides an optimistic future for dairy goat production in this region.

  • The use of caffeine as a psychoactive stimulant in tea has been observed to have serious negative effects in humans' systems such as respiratory, nervous, cardiovascular, renal and skeletal systems. This study was carried out to assess the levels of caffeine in 10 different tea brands available in local market in Dutse, Jigawa State, Nigeria. Quantitative analysis of caffeine was performed by a simple and fast UV-Vis spectrophotometric methods using different solvents for extraction. The caffeine content in all the tea samples analyzed in this study were below the maximum allowable limits set by the USFDA. Tea have been associated with adverse health effects and the claims made by manufacturers about the benefits of tea do not highlight risks associated with excessive consumption of a combination of the ingredients contained in tea. Long term effects of tea consumption of children and young people have not been adequately studied. Therefore, it is recommended that further research be carried out on the adverse effects of energy drinks on children. Research is also needed to be done on the effects of the combination of ingredients on health and excessive consumption of those ingredients to children and adolescents. People need to be educated and given proper awareness on the health risks associated with caffeine containing beverages.

쇠고기 포장육의 냉장유통을 위한 국내 유통망의 온도관리 실태 조사 (Investigation on the Actual State of Temperature Control in the Raw Meat Distributing Chain for Chilled Beef)

  • Good temperature control in the chill chain is imperative for maintaining safety and quality of the fresh meat. Therefore, the actual state of temperature or relative humidity histories of fresh meat product from carcass chill room to retail shop and the temperatures of chill and freezing rooms at local butcher shops were monitored by means of data loggers. The relative humidity and air temperature in carcass chill room were between 86 and 98%, and -3 and 0$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The surface temperatures of boxed beef measured in winter, when the outside air temperature was measured between -2 and -5$^{\circ}C$, were recorded between 1 and 3$^{\circ}C$, although transport vehicle switched off the chilling unit during transportation, However, the inside temperatures of chill transport vehicle measured in summer, when the transport time was prolonged to maximum 8 hrs, were raised to 10 to 15$^{\circ}C$, in worst case up to 25$^{\circ}C$. In that case, however, the inside temperature of boxed beef was maintained generally lower than 5$^{circ}C$ as the loading and unloading were finished within 30 min. The storage temperatures for meat in the subfreezing room, at which the butcher shops in local market are used to set to facilitate the thin slicing of meat, were measured between -2 and -8$^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, the temperatures of storage room for vacuum packaged meat in the chilled meat retail shops were maintained generally between 0 and +2$^{\circ}C$.

농촌지역 수출 시행단계 농가의 수출 경험에 관한 질적 연구 (Qualitative Research on the Rural Farmers' Exporting Experience in Stage of Conducting Export)

  • As an essential means to the exploitation of new demands, the export of agri-food has the price-supporting effect on the domestic agri-food and its expansion can be a good way to increase farms' income. Of course, to enhance farms' income under the liberalization of the market, it is necessary to have countermeasures considering various factors. To this end, the study understood the experiences of farms doing exports and looked into ways to improve them by reviewing their motivations to export, difficulties, requirements, etc. In this context, the study conducted the purposive sampling among tomato export farmhouses in Jeongseon-gun in the export enforcement phase and executed the theme analysis. The research findings and suggestions are as follows. First, in order to enhance the level of commercialization of Jeongseon-gun tomatoes and reinforce the trade bargaining power, it is necessary to form the consensus on policy and make the scaling of the site based on the strong organization power. To this end, it requires the active role of agricultural cooperatives that take a big portion of distribution in the site and distribute its profits directly to farmhouses. Second, it is necessary to set clear target markets for Jeongseon-gun tomato export farms and set sales strategies for each target market. That is, in order to expand the export of Jeongseon-gun tomatoes, after clarifying local sales and export sales, export farmhouses should focus on quality management and secure the quantity for export. Third, to expand the export to Japan which already has the foundation for the export of Korean tomatoes, and to new export countries of China, Russia, etc., it is necessary to set the 'Two-Track Strategies for Export Market (particular item for focus and particular area for focus)' through the building of network of tomato export areas in Gangwon-do. In conclusion, to expand the export of Jeongseon-gun tomatoes, agricultural cooperatives and leaders together should build the strong organizational power with farmhouses and secure the quantities for export. And, according to the 'Two-Track Strategies for Export Market (particular item for focus and particular area for focus)', export infrastructure and export operational system should be built and to do so, the solidarity of tomato export farmhouses in Gangwon area should precede.

농촌마을축제의 농산물 직거래 장터 디자인에 대한 사용자 평가 - 유니버설디자인 관점에서 - (User Evaluation of the Farmers' Market Design in the Rural Village Festival - The Perspective of the Universal Design -)

  • This study is in order to promote agricultural products sold in the rural village festivals direct transaction marketplace and enabled by a comprehensive user evaluation of the rural village festivals direct transaction marketplaces in universal design perspective, provide a design plan for your care and comfort of a rural village festival Direct Deals Marketplace there is a purpose. Thus, redefining the principles of universal design suitable for direct transactions rural village festival marketplaces, and to do this by reclassifying the design elements of the farmstand-type in a framework was developed 30 questions to evaluate items for Universal Design Evaluation. And, the selection of three villages along the rural village festivals scale and conducted a survey of Universal Design Rating. As a result, the overall assessment was positive for B villages of rural village festival marketplaces direct transactions, there was a significant difference with the other village. In particular, there was a notable difference in the fairness, efficiency, promotional, safety and hygiene. And, there was a significant difference in design elements for directing atmosphere by selling space, product display, hygiene. This paper presents the design suggestions about a rural village festivals farmers' market aspects of universal design for improvement of the marketplace as following, 1) placement for differentiation the markerplace and around sites in the festival place, 2) to build the operating systems of sustainable management for arrangement and organization during the festival, 3) to install the device for maintaining agricultural products freshness 4) to separate the sale of local specialty products and general food products, and 5) to locate the suitable space considering the visitors tour route in the festival place for large-scale festival.

후쿠시마산(産) 농산물 수요감소에 대비한 농산물 수출전략 (Export Strategies Against Decreasing Demand of Fukushima's Agricultural Porducts)

  • In 1995, the WTO started to ease the trade barriers. Globalization has accelerated. The opening of the agricultural products market is rapidly gaining momentum with the conclusion of an FTA. The acceleration of this FTA is expected to be a threat to Korea's agriculture, and a new strategy is needed. At the beginning of the nuclear accident, mainly radioactive materials are found in the surface layer of the soil. Over time, the concentration of the plant gradually increases. After 5 years, it becomes noticeable. In March 2016, it will be five years after the nuclear accident. Radioactive contamination is very likely to occur in agricultural products produced in the Fukushima area at this time. In this period, agricultural products produced in the Fukushima region are expected to generate supply disruptions in Japan, and imports to replace them will increase. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a mid- and long-term strategy for exporting to Japan by analyzing the competitiveness of Korean agricultural products. In this study, standardization index was derived by using agricultural price ratio, TSI, export CAC. Based on this, we analyzed the competitiveness of each item in the Japanese market. The analysis shows that garlic is the most competitive product in the Japanese market. Also, strawberry, tomato, and cucumber were found to be competitive. On the other hand, Kiwi, pineapple, soybean, onion, potato, etc. As a result of the analysis, the following strategies were proposed for the export of agricultural products with high competitiveness. First, it is necessary to develop technology to suppress deterioration of export transportation quality. Second, continuous supply of local consumption pattern information is required. Third, it is necessary to expand exports by processing fresh food. Fourth, it suggested the establishment of export base and strengthening of support system.

영유아용 분말 조제분유의 미생물 품질분석과 위해세균 모니터링 (Microbiological Quality and Potential Pathogen Monitoring for Powdered Infant Formulas from the Local Market)

  • 국내에서 생산, 유통되고 있는 영유아용 분말 조제분유 99제품을 수집하여 일반세균, 대장균군, FAO/WHO Category A, B, C 위해세균 분류에 따른 오염현황을 분석하였다. 일반세균수는 총 99개의 제품 중 92개의 제품에서 검출(93%)되었으며 $1.83{\pm}0.68\;Log\;CFU/g$의 분포를 보였다. 최고 $4.5\;Log\;CFU/g$가 검출된 한 제품을 제외하고는 조제분유의 총균수의 기준규격에 적합하였다. 대장균군은 조제분유 대장균군의 기준규격이 음성인 것에 비해 99개의 제품 중 12개의 제품에서 검출(12%)되었으며 $1.26{\pm}1.03\;\log\;MPN/g$의 분포를 보였다. 대장균은 한 제품에서 0.48 log MPN/g으로 검출되었다. Category A 세균인 Salmonella와 En. sakazakii의 오염도 분석 결과 총 99개의 모든 제품에서 검출되지 않았다. Category B group인 세균 중에서 장내세균은 99개의 제품 중 25개의 제품에서 검출(25%)되었고 오염수준은 $0.83{\pm}1.37\;\log\;MPN/g$으로 나타났다. 검출된 Category B group 세균들로는 Escherichia vulneris, Es. hermannii, Pantoea spp., Citrobacter koseri, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloaceae 등이었다. Category C세균의 오염은 Bacillus cereus가 조제분유 99개의 제품 중에서 29개의 제품이 검출(29%)되어 비교적 높은 오염도를 보였지만 오염수준은 $0.69{\pm}0.32\;\log\;MPN/g$으로서 B. cereus의 국내 기준규격에 모두 적합하였다. 그 외의 Category C 세균은 검출되지 않았다. 국내 유통 조제분유의 주요 위해세균의 대한 미생물 오염정도가 낮아 미생물 기준 규격에 적합한 것으로 평가되었다. 그러나 Category B의 장내세균은 높은 검출율을 보였고 질환을 유발시킬 수 있는 균들이 확인되어 잠재적인 위험이 있다고 사료된다. 따라서 비살균식품인 조제분유의 특성상 잠재적인 위해세균 모니터링이 지속적으로 필요하며 그에 대한 안전성 확보에 능동적 자세가 필요하다.

전통 떡류에 대한 대학생들의 이용 현황에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Consumption of Korean Traditional Rice Cakes by College Students)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the consumption patterns of traditional Korean rice cake among college students. Self administered questionnaires were collected from 512 college students in the Seoul, Kyunggi, Chungchung, Kyungsang, Junla and Gangwondo areas. The data were statistically analysed using frequency analysis, chi-squared and t-tests and a one-way ANOVA. By examining the results of the student's perceptions of traditional Korean rice cake, it was found that most know little, or only a moderate amount, about this type of food. Meanwhile, more than half the students liked traditional Korean rice cake, as this type of food satisfied their need for a traditional Korean taste, while the reason for disliking was that they were more familiar with western-style confectionary. Most students answered that they only ate traditional Korean rice cake on special occasions, such as big holidays or ceremonies for the dead ancestors. Most answered that they bought those foods at conventional markets, the mile in the neighborhood, (Eds note: I dont't understand, do you mean, “within a mile of their neighborhood”\ulcorner) or atbig malls. The factor they considered the most important at the time of purchase was the quality (taste), which demonstrates the need for the development of traditional Korean rice cakes, with new tastes and shapes, which still satisfy the Korean's taste, whilemaintaining the traditional taste. For the questions that asked about the problems faced by the traditional Korean rice cake manufacturing industry, and the reasons for low consumption, the students responded that buying this type of food was difficult as the outlets selling themwere not easy to find. Our results seem to suggest that there are almost no specialty stores for the sale of traditional Korean rice cake compared to the other types of cakes that are scattered all over the country. (Eds note: this is only my opinion, and I maybe wrong, but I would have thought that trying to market traditional Korean rice cakes at local convenience stores, rather than speciality stores, would make them more available to the general public. Their marketing at speciality stores will maintain the status quo, i.e. people will go to the speciality stores to purchase product for holidays and special occasions, whereas they will go to the local convenience stores to buy general everyday snacks etc.)

IPA기법을 활용한 해양스포츠이벤트 관광지 매력성에 대한 중요도와 만족도의 차이분석 (An Analysis of Difference between Importance and Satisfaction of Destination Attractiveness for Marine Sport Event using IPA Method)

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the analysis of differences between importance and satisfaction of destination attractiveness for the national marine sports games using IPA method. By doing so, this study aimed to utilize the result of study for a practical marketing strategy in operating and establishing Korean marine sports market circumstances. The participants of this study consisted of 328 who were participated in marine sport event (yacht, fin-swimming, canoe, triathlon and so on) of 9th national marine sports games. Samples were extracted by convenient sampling method. A total 328 questionnaires were collected in this study except data which did not respond or trustless responded. In data processing, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, frequency analysis, paired t-test and Importance-Performance Analysis were performed through SPSS 20.0. The results were as follows. First, I quadrant included Programs Multiplicity, Pamphlet, Stand preparations, Food Cleanliness, Effective Progress, Guide Know-How, Food taste. Third, II quadrant included Pre-Publicity, Internet Information, Proper Food Price, Shade Facilities, Convenient Parking, Restroom Cleanliness, Number of Restroom, Safety Facilities. Fourth, III quadrant included Entertaining Program, Number of Guide, Local Culture, Game Progress, Directional Sign. Fifth, IV quadrant included Performance Program, Well-Matched Event, View Distance, Various Food.

시중 닭튀김의 구성 지방산 조성 (Evaluation of the Fatty Acid Composition of Fried-chicken Sold in the Market)

  • 본 연구는 시판되는 닭튀김류의 지방함량과 지방산 조성, 트랜스 지방산함량 및 산가를 조사하기 위해 총 20종을 대상으로 분석하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 20종의 닭튀김에서 추출된 지방함량은 $4.94{\sim}18.06%$의 다양한 범위를 나타내었다. 이러한 지방함량의 분포는 닭 자체의 지방함량이나 닭을 튀긴 기름의 종류, 튀김온도, 시간, 튀김옷의 성분차이 등 다양한 요인에 의한 차이라고 생각된다. 조사된 닭튀김의 주요 지방산 조성은 palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid 등이었다. 포화 지방산 중에서 palmitic acid($10.67{\sim}25.43%$)가 불포화지방산 중에서는 oleic acid($29.78{\sim}67.85%$)와 linoleic acid($8.42{\sim}39.54%$)가 가장 많았다. 식품 100 g당 함유되어 있는 트랜스 지방산 함량은 0.1 g 이하의 낮은 함량을 보여주었으며 닭튀김에 함유된 지방을 추출하여 산가를 측정한 결과 20종의 닭튀김의 결과치는 식품공전상 튀김식품의 산가 규격을 초과하지 않는 양호한 결과를 나타내었다.
