An Adaptive Workflow Scheduling Scheme Based on an Estimated Data Processing Rate for Next Generation Sequencing in Cloud Computing

  • The cloud environment makes it possible to analyze large data sets in a scalable computing infrastructure. In the bioinformatics field, the applications are composed of the complex workflow tasks, which require huge data storage as well as a computing-intensive parallel workload. Many approaches have been introduced in distributed solutions. However, they focus on static resource provisioning with a batch-processing scheme in a local computing farm and data storage. In the case of a large-scale workflow system, it is inevitable and valuable to outsource the entire or a part of their tasks to public clouds for reducing resource costs. The problems, however, occurred at the transfer time for huge dataset as well as there being an unbalanced completion time of different problem sizes. In this paper, we propose an adaptive resource-provisioning scheme that includes run-time data distribution and collection services for hiding the data transfer time. The proposed adaptive resource-provisioning scheme optimizes the allocation ratio of computing elements to the different datasets in order to minimize the total makespan under resource constraints. We conducted the experiments with a well-known sequence alignment algorithm and the results showed that the proposed scheme is efficient for the cloud environment.

  • In this study, a formulation of the idealized plate element based upon the idealized structural unit method(ISUM) firstly proposed by Ueda et.al is made in an attempt to analyze the geometric nonlinear behaviour up to the buckling strength of thin-walled long structures like box-column structure including the coupling effect between local and global buckling. An application to the example box-column is also performed and it is found that the present method gives reliable results with consuming very short computing times and therefore is very useful for evaluation of the buckling strength of thin-walled long structures.

  • In this paper, it is shown that the conventional methods for dealing with the singularity problem of a manipulator can be generalized as a local minimization problem with differently weighted objective functions. A new damping method proposed in this article automatically determines the damping amounts for singular values, which are inversely proportional to the magnitude of the singular values. Furthermore, this can be done without explicitly computing the singular values. The proposed method can be applied to all the manipulators with revolute joints.

Review of Data-Driven Multivariate and Multiscale Methods

  • In this paper, time-frequency analysis algorithms, empirical mode decomposition and local mean decomposition, are reviewed and their applications to nonlinear and nonstationary real-world data are discussed. In addition, their generic extensions to complex domain are addressed for the analysis of multichannel data. Simulations of these algorithms on synthetic data illustrate the fundamental structure of the algorithms and how they are designed for the analysis of nonlinear and nonstationary data. Applications of the complex version of the algorithms to the synthetic data also demonstrate the benefit of the algorithms for the accurate frequency decomposition of multichannel data.

  • 휴대용 기기와 다양한 위치 기반 서비스의 확산으로 공간데이터의 양적 팽창이 가속화됨에 따라 대용량의 공간데이터를 효율적으로 다룰 수 있는 기술의 중요성이 점차 커지고 있다. 클라우드 컴퓨팅은 인터넷을 통해 스토리지, 메모리, 애플리케이션 등 다양한 전산 자원을 공유할 수 있는 서비스 환경으로, 최근 이를 활용해 대용량의 공간데이터를 처리, 분석하는 방법과 그 필요성에 관한 연구가 활발히 수행되어 왔다. 그러나 아직까지 대용량 공간데이터의 분석에 클라우드 컴퓨팅 플랫폼을 활용했을 때 어느 정도의 성능 향상을 기대할 수 있는지에 대한 실증적 연구는 비교적 많이 이루어지지 않았으며, 본 연구의 목표는 이러한 논의의 공백을 채우는 것이다. 이를 위해 연구에서는 클라우드 컴퓨팅 플랫폼에서 병렬 연산을 사용했을 때 모란지수와 지리가중회귀분석의 연산 속도가 어느 정도 향상되는지 살펴보았으며, 그 결과를 통해 클라우드 컴퓨팅을 활용한 공간분석의 효율성을 평가하였다. 실험 결과, 중앙처리장치의 클록 수가 더 높은 로컬 컴퓨터에 비해 병렬 연산에 적합한 환경을 갖춘 공용 클라우드 컴퓨팅 플랫폼에서 좀 더 효율적인 연산이 가능했으며, 데이터의 규모가 클수록 격차가 더욱 크게 나타났다.

  • A few bioinformatics tools have been used to find out conserved regions as probes. We have developed a system based on a heuristic method with web interfaces to find out conserved regions against microbial genomes. The system runs in real time by using relative entropy in limited narrow regions and detecting similar regions between pair regions with local alignment. The system could be useful to find out conserved regions as genome-wide scale.

  • This research proposes a generalized local feature structure named "LSG(Local Surface Group) for model-based 3D object recognition". An LSG consists of a surface and its immediately adjacent surface that are simultaneously visible for a given viewpoint. That is, LSG is not a simple feature but a viewpoint-dependent feature structure that contains several attributes such as surface type. color, area, radius, and simultaneously adjacent surface. In addition, we have developed a new method based on Bayesian theory that computes a measure of how distinct an LSG is compared to other LSGs for the purpose of object recognition. We have experimented the proposed methods on an object databaed composed of twenty 3d object. The experimental results show that LSG and the Bayesian computing method can be successfully employed to achieve rapid 3D object recognition.

Zone based Ad Hoc Network Construction Scheme for Local IoT Networks

  • In this paper, we propose a zone based ad hoc network construction scheme which support ad hoc path between nodes in local IoT networks consisting of IoT devices with the constrained feature, such as low power, the limited transmission rate and low computing capacity. Recently, the various routing protocols have been studied to support ad hoc networking of local IoT environments. This is, because basis RPL protocol is deigned to be used for the connecting service with Internet through gateway, ad hoc path between nodes in local IoT networks is not supported in basis RPL protocol. Thus, in this paper, the proposed routing scheme provides both ad hoc path and Infra path through gateway, supporting basis RPL protocol simultaneously. Through simulation, we show that the proposed routing scheme with zone based path selection scheme improves the performance of the success rate of end-to-end data transmission and the end-to-end delay, compared to basis RPL protocol.

한의학 고문헌 텍스트에서의 인용문 추정과 탐색 (Detecting Local Text Reuse in the Texts of East Asian Traditional Medicine)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this paper was to examine quantitative methods for estimating and detecting local text reuse in the texts of East Asian Traditional Medicine. Methods : We introduce techniques that estimate the volume of local text reuse with n-gram and those that directly detect the reuse with the Smith-Waterman algorithm (SW algorithm). Based on this, the estimation and detection of local text reuse were carried out for 『Donguibogam』 and 『Huangdineijing·Suwen』. Results : Estimates with n-gram had more errors than methods with SW algorithms. SW algorithms detected suspected strings directly with local text reuse, resulting in more accurate results. Conclusions : Although n-gram does not accurately find local text reuse, its high speed makes it a preferable method for certain purposes, such as screening similar documents. On the other hand, SW algorithms have the advantage of being relatively good at finding similar phrases suspected as local text reuse even if the strings do not completely match. However, due to its excessive consumption of time and computing resources, its benefits are limited to cases where precise results are required.

  • 컴퓨팅 서비스가 언제 어디서나 이용 가능한 유비쿼터스 컴퓨팅에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 유비쿼터스 컴퓨팅 환경을 구축하기 위해 해결해야하는 문제 중 하나는 다양한 특성의 서비스들을 어떻게 효과적으로 제공하고 이를 관리하느냐는 점이다. 기존에 제안된 유비쿼터스 서비스 제공 시스템은 특정 종류의 서비스만을 지원하는데 중점을 두고 있다. 또한 상황과 서비스의 관계 표현 방법이 복잡해 다양한 사용자가 생활하는 복잡한 공간에서 서비스를 제공하는데 어려움이 있다. 본 논문은 이런 문제에 대한 해결 방안으로 Personal Kiosk (PK) 모델을 제안한다. PK는 모바일 단말기를 통해 사용자가 언제 어디서나 유용한 서비스를 사용할 수 있게 해주는 것을 목표로 하는 유비쿼터스 서비스 모델이다. 현재 단계의 PK는 로컬지역을 대상으로 연구되고 있다. 본 논문은 로컬지역에 PK 모델을 구현하기 위해 필요한 실내에서의 정밀한 위치인식기법과 효과적인 서비스 발견기법을 설명하며 이를 바탕으로 사용자의 위치, 권한, 시간정보를 이용해 개인화된 서비스를 제공하는 방법을 설명한다. PK 모델은 서비스를 이용하기 위해 소모되는 사용자의 노력과 시간을 크게 감소시켜 보다 편리한 모바일 서비스 환경을 구축할 수 있게 한다.
