  • The development of non-flammable all-solid-state batteries (ASSLBs) has become a hot topic due to the known drawbacks of commercial lithium-ion batteries. As the possibility of applying sulfide solid electrolytes (SSEs) for electric vehicle batteries increases, efforts for the low-cost mass-production are actively underway. Until now, most studies have used high-energy mechanical milling, which is easy to control composition and impurities and can reduce the process time. Through this, various SSEs that exceed the Li+ conductivity of liquid electrolytes have been reported, and expectations for the realization of ASSLBs are growing. However, the high-energy mechanical milling method has disadvantages in obtaining the same physical properties when mass-produced, and in controlling the particle size or shape, so that physical properties deteriorate during the full process. On the other hand, wet chemical synthesis technology, which has advantages in mass production and low price, is still in the initial exploration stage. In this technology, SSEs are mainly manufactured through producing a particle-type, solution-type, or mixed-type precursor, but a clear understanding of the reaction mechanism hasn't been made yet. In this review, wet chemical synthesis technologies for SSEs are summarized regarding the reaction mechanism between the raw materials in the solvent.

  • Lithium ions can induce the thermal runaway phenomenon and lead to reignition due to electrical, mechanical, and environmental factors such as high temperature, smoke generation, explosions, or flames, which is extremely likely to create safety concerns. Therefore, one of the ways to improve the flame retardancy of the electrolyte is to use a flame-retardant additive. Comparing the associated characteristic value of existing substances with the required experimental value, it was found that these values were either considerably different or were not documented. It is vital to know a substance's combustion characteristic values, flash point, explosion limit, and autoignition temperature (AIT) as well as its combustion characteristics before using it. In this research, the flash point and AIT of materials were measured by mixing a highly volatile and flammable substance, diethyl carbonate (DEC), with flame-retardant dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP). The flash point of DEC, which is a pure substance, was 29℃, and that for DMMP was 65℃. Further, the lower explosion limit calculated using the measured flash point of DEC was 1.79 Vol.%, while that for DMMP was 0.79 Vol.%. The AIT was 410℃ and 390℃ for DEC and DMMP, respectively. In particular, since the AIT of DMMP has not been discussed in any previous study, it is necessary to ensure safety through experimental values. In this study, the experimental and regression analysis revealed that the average absolute deviation (ADD) for the flash point of the DEC+DMMP DEC+DMMP system is 0.58 sec and that the flash point tends to increase according to changes in the composition employed. It also revealed that the AAD for the AIT of the mixture was 3.17 sec and that the AIT tended to decrease and then increase based on changes in the composition.

  • The spinel material $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ has attracted considerable attention as an anode electrode material for many battery applications owing to its light weight and high energy density. However, the real capacity of $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ powder as determined by the solid-state method is lower than the ideal capacity. In this study, we investigated the effect of the dopants in M-doped spinel $Ba_xLi_{4-2x}Ti_5O_{12}$(x=0.005, 0.05, 0.1) powders prepared by the solid-state reaction method and used as the anode material in lithiumion batteries. The results confirmed the effect of the Ba and Sr dopants on the powder properties of the spinel $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$, which exhibited a pure spinel structure without any secondary phase in its XRD pattern. Moreover, the electrochemical properties of the spinel M-LTO materials were investigated using a half cell. The electrochemical data show that cells with anodes made of undoped $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ and Ba- and Sr-doped $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ have discharge capacities of 97, 130, and 112 mAh/g, respectively, at the first cycle. Moreover, the Ba- and Sr-doped spinel $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ demonstrated good properties in the mid-voltage range at 1.55 V, showing stable cyclic voltammogram properties which surpassed those of the same material without Ba or Sr at 1 C after 100 cycles.

  • A series of Mn compound were prepared by seed-assisted method. The seed used in this reaction was manufactured by calcination of $MnCO_3$ at various temperatures and effects of the calcination temperature on seed-assisted reaction were investigated. With increase of the calcination temperature, CMD (${\gamma}-MnO_2$) was recovered after seed-assisted reactions. LMO used as cathode active material in the Li-ion batteries were synthesized from Mn source obtained in the seed-assisted reaction and the electrochemical properties (rate capability, cycle life performance and specific capacity) of the LMO were investigated. The LMO synthesized from the CMD which is obtained by the reaction with seed prepared by calcination of $MnCO_3$ more than $350^{\circ}C$ shown good electrochemical properties.

  • This study reports on the development and performance verification of cell simulation boards of simulator and the embedded program for board control of the battery management system (BMS) of electric vehicle (EV) cars, which manages the next-generation automotive lithium-ion battery pack. Here, we have improved the speed of the simulator by using operational (OP) amplifier and transistors that were connected in series. In addition, using a digital analog converter (DAC) in each channel, we have improved the performance by channel-to-channel isolation (isolation) as compared to the traditional methods. Furthermore, by constructing a current-limiting protection circuit, one can be protected from disturbance and, by utilizing a precision shunt resistor for the current sensor, we have increased the precision of the current control. In order to verify the performance of the developed simulator, we have performed the experiment 10 times, with values ranging from 0.5 V to 5 V, and a voltage drop step of 0.5 V. Significance analysis of experimental data, and repeatability tests were performed, showing an average standard deviation of 0.001~0.004 V, indicating high repeatability and high statistical significance of the current method and system.

  • Recently, the installation of energy storage systems (ESSs) that have a range of functions, such as power stabilization of renewable energy sources, demand control, and frequency regulation, has been increasing annually. On the other hand, since the fire accident of ESS occurred at Gochang Power Test Center in August 2017, 29 fire accidents with significant property losses have occurred, including the Gyeongsan substation and Kunsan PV power plant. Because these fire accidents of ESS are arisen regardless of the season and capacity of ESS, an analysis of the fault characteristics in ESS is required to confirm the causes of the fire accidents accurately and ensure the safety of the ESS. This paper proposes the modeling of ESS using PSCAD/EMTDC S/W to identify the fault characteristics and ensure the safety of the ESS. From the simulation results of fault characteristics based on various scenarios, it is clear that the insulation of ESS may be breakdown due to the largely occurring CMV (common mode voltage). Furthermore, the CMV between the PCS and battery can be reduced, and the insulation breakdown of ESS can be prevented if an SPD (surge protect device) is installed in the battery and PCS sides, respectively.

  • Mesoporous tin oxide (meso-$SnO_2$) with 5 nm mesopore and well-aligned $SnO_2$ nanowire-bundles with 5~7 nm diameters were prepared by template synthesis method. In addition to meso-$SnO_2$, meso-$SnO_2$/$SiO_2$, which has almost the same structure as meso-$SnO_2$ including $SiO_2$ used as the template were prepared by the modification of template synthesis. X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, transmission electron microscopy observed structures of meso-$SnO_2$ and meso-$SnO_2$/$SiO_2$. Although the meso-$SnO_2$/$SiO_2$ showed some positive evidences to suppress the volume change of meso-$SnO_2$ through cyclic voltammogram, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and voltage profiles during cycling, its cycle life was not improved highly to address modified structural effects. Thus, further study might be done to control the nanostructure of meso-$SnO_2$/$SiO_2$ for enhanced cycle performance.

  • Si/C/CNF composites as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries were examined to improve the capacity and cycle performance. Si/C/CNF composites were prepared by the fabrication process including the synthesis and magnesiothermic reduction of SBA-15 to obtain Si/MgO by ball milling and the carbonization of phenol resin with CNF and HCl etching. Prepared Si/C/CNF composites were then analysed by BET, XRD, FE-SEM and TGA. Among SBA-15 samples synthesized at reaction temperatures between 50 and $70^{\circ}C$, the SBA-15 at $60^{\circ}C$ showed the largest specific surface area. Also the electrochemical performances of Si/C/CNF composites as an anode electrode were investigated by constant current charge/discharge test, cyclic voltammetry and impedance tests in the electrolyte of LiPF6 dissolved in mixed organic solvents (EC : DMC : EMC = 1 : 1 : 1 vol%). The coin cell using Si/C/CNF composites (Si : CNF = 97 : 3 in weight) showed better capacity (1,947 mAh/g) than that of other composition coin cells. The capacity retention ratio decreased from 84% (Si : CNF = 97 : 3 in weight) to 77% (Si : CNF = 89 : 11 in weight). It was found that the Si/C/CNF composite electrode shows an improved cycling performance and electric conductivity.

  • In this study, the electrochemical performance of Graphite/Silicon/Pitch composites as anode material was investigated to improve the low theoretical capacity of artificial graphite. Spherical artificial graphite surface was coated with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) amphiphiles material to synthesize Graphite/Silica material by silica islands growth. The Graphite/Silicon/Pitch composites were prepared by petroleum pitch coating and magnesiothermic reduction. The Graphite/Silicon/Pitch composite electrodes manufactured using poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) binders. The coin type half cell was assembled using various electrolytes and additives. The Graphite/Silicon/Pitch composites were analysed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The electrochemical characteristics of Graphite/Silicon/Pitch composite were investigated by constant current charge/discharge, rate performance, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The Graphite/Silicon/Pitch composites showed high cycle stability at a graphite/silica/pitch ratio (1:4:8 wt%). When the electrode is prepared using PAA binder, the high capacity and stability is obtained. The coin type half cell assembled using EC: DMC: EMC electrolyte showed high initial capacity (719 mAh/g) and excellent cycle stability. The rate performance has an capacity retention (77%) at 2 C/0.1 C and an capacity recovery (88%) at 0.1 C / 0.1 C when the vinylene carbonate (VC) was added.

  • Many studies on the electrochemical performance of Li secondary batteries have been obtained using coin-type cells due to the ease of assembly, low cost and ensuring reproducibility. The coin-type cell consists of a case, a gasket, a spacer disk, and a wave spring. These structural features require a greater amount of liquid electrolyte to assemble than other types of cells such as laminated cells and cylindrical cells. Nevertheless, little research has been conducted on the effect of excess liquid electrolytes on the electrochemical performances of Li secondary batteries. In this study, we investigate the effect of different amounts of electrolyte on the coin-type cells. The amount of electrolytes is adjusted to 30 and $100mg\;mAh^{-1}$. Cycle performances at room temperature ($25^{\circ}C$) and high temperature ($60^{\circ}C$) and high voltage are performed to investigate the electrochemical properties of the different amount of electrolytes. In the case of the unit cell including the electrolyte of $30mg\;mAh^{-1}$, the discharging capacity retention characteristic is excellent in comparison with the case of $100mg\;mAh^{-1}$ under the high temperature and high voltage condition. The former shows a larger increase in internal resistance than the latter, confirming that the amount of electrolyte significantly influences the discharge capacity retention characteristics of the battery.
