Performance of modified graphite as anode material for lithium-ion secondary battery

  • Two different types of graphite, such as flake graphite (FG) and spherical graphite (SG), were used as anode materials for a lithium-ion secondary battery in order to investigate their electrochemical performance. The FG particles were prepared by pulverizing natural graphite with a planetary mill. The SG particles were treated by immersing them in acid solutions or mixing them with various carbon additives. With a longer milling time, the particle size of the FG decreased. Since smaller particles allow more exposure of the edge planes toward the electrolyte, it could be possible for the FG anodes with longer milling time to deliver high reversible capacity; however, their initial efficiency was found to have decreased. The initial efficiency of SG anodes with acid treatments was about 90%, showing an over 20% higher value than that of FG anodes. With acid treatment, the discharge rate capability and the initial efficiency improved slightly. The electrochemical properties of the SG anodes improved slightly with carbon additives such as acetylene black (AB), Super P, Ketjen black, and carbon nanotubes. Furthermore, the cyclability was much improved due to the effect of the conductive bridge made by carbon additives such as AB and Super P.

  • 리튬이온전지의 다공성 전극내에서 전해액 주입 후 발생하는 함침현상에 관하여 격자 볼츠만법을 이용하여 수치해석적으로 연구하였다. 다공성 전극은 전극 제조 중 압연공정을 거치므로 압축된 전극의 공극률과 두께변화가 발생하여 전해액 함침성에 영향을 미치게 된다. 본 연구에서는 2 차원 격자 볼츠만법을 통하여 압축률에 따른 전해액 분포와 포화도 변화를 제시하였다. 압축된 전극에서의 전해액 침투경로의 변화는 기공의 두께방향 크기 감소에 기인하며, 따라서 전극의 함침성이 크게 감소하였음을 확인하였다.

  • As the separator becomes thinner, the role of thermal stability becomes more important in ensuring the high capacity of medium- and large-sized lithium-ion secondary batteries. In this study, we researched coating technology to improve the separator's thermal stability. We minimized the coating time by optimizing the design of a vertical two-stage coater that was thin, uniform, and capable of coating on both sides at the same time with a maximum 2㎛ thickness coating layer of fluorinated polymer (PVdF-HFP) on the bare polyethylene (PE) separator, which increased the thermal stability. In addition, during the coating process, a dual-jacket-roll method of drying was developed that increased the drying effectiveness without thermal damage to the separator. We also investigated the thermal stability of the separator manufactured from a coating machine, and studied the battery-applied performance by making a lithium-ion pouch battery.

Preparation of rGO-S-CPEs Composite Cathode and Electrochemical Performance of All-Solid-State Lithium-Sulfur Battery

  • The application of polymer composite electrolyte in all-solid-state lithium-sulfur battery (ASSLSBs) can guarantee high energy density and improve the interface contact between electrolyte and electrode, which has a broader application prospect. However, the inherent insulation of the sulfur-cathode leads to a low electron/ion transfer rate. Carbon materials with high electronic conductivity and electrolyte materials with high ionic conductivity are usually selected to improve the electron/ion conduction of the composite cathode. In this work, PEO-LiTFSI-LLZO composite polymer electrolyte (CPE) with high ionic conductivity was prepared. The ionic conductivity was 1.16×10-4 and 7.26×10-4 S cm-1 at 20 and 60℃, respectively. Meanwhile, the composite sulfur cathode was prepared with Sulfur, reduced graphene oxide and composite polymer electrolyte slurry (S-rGO-CPEs). In addition to improving the ion conductivity in the cathode, CPEs also replaces the role of binder. The influence of different contents of CPEs in the cathode material on the performance of the constructed battery was investigated. The results show that the electrochemical performance of the all-solid-state lithium-sulfur battery is the best when the content of the composite electrolyte in the cathode is 40%. Under the condition of 0.2C and 45℃, the charging and discharging capacity of the first cycle is 923 mAh g-1, and the retention capacity is 653 mAh g-1 after 50 cycles.

  • 리튬이온배터리는 여러 에너지저장시스템 중 가장 관심을 받고 있는 장치이다. 특히, 분산형 전력공급원으로서의 신재생에너지 수요의 증가, 안정적인 전력의 수급, 전기자동차의 보급의 확대에 따라 에너지저장장치의 사용은 증가하고 있다. 최근, 에너지저장장치로서 리튬이온배터리의 사용량의 증가에 따른 폐리튬이온배터리의 재활용, 복원 기술은 사회, 경제적으로 중요한 연구분야이다. 본 총설에서는 최근 폐리튬이온배터리 성능진단, 재활용 또는 복원 기술과 발전가능성에 대하여 기술하고자 한다.

A Study on the Initial Irreversible Capacity of Lithium Intercalation Using Gradually Increasing State of Charge

  • Initial irreversible capacity (IIC) can be defined by means of the initial intercalation Ah efficiency (IIE) and the initial irreversible specific capacity at the surface (IICs) with the linear-fit range of the intercalation so as to precisely express the irreversibility of an electrode-electrolyte system. Their relationship was IIC = Qc - Q$_{D}$ = (IIE$^{-1}$ - 1) Q$_{D}$ + IICs in the linear-fit range of IIE. Here, Qc and Qd signify charge and discharge capacity, respectively, based on a complete lithium ion battery cell. Charge indicates lithium insertion to carbon anode. Two terms of IIE and IICs depended on the types of active materials and compositions of the electrode and electrolyte but did not change with charging state. In an ideal electrode-electrolyte system, IIE and IICs would be 100%, 0 mAh/g for the electrode and mAh for the cell, respectively. These properties can be easily obtained by the Gradual Increasing of State of Charge (GISOC).OC).

Analysis, Design and Implementation of Flexible Interlaced Converter for Lithium Battery Active Balancing in Electric Vehicles

  • With the widespread use of modern clean energy, lithium-ion batteries have become essential as a more reliable energy storage component in the energy Internet. However, due to the difference in monomers, some of the battery over-charge or over-discharge in battery packs restrict their use. Therefore, a novel multiphase interleaved converter for reducing the inconsistencies of the individual cells in a battery pack is proposed in this paper. Based on the multiphase converter branches connected to each lithium battery, this circuit realizes energy transferred from any cell(s) to any other cell(s) complementarily. This flexible interlaced converter is composed of an improved bi-directional Buck-Boost circuit that is presented with its own available control method. A simulation model based on the PNGV model of fundamental equalization is built with four cells in PSIM. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that converter and its control achieve simple and fast equalization. Furthermore, a comparison of traditional methods and the HNFABC equalization is provided to show the performance of the converter and the control of lithium-based battery stacks.

  • 혼합 호산성 박테리아를 이용하여 리튬이온 밧데리 산업 폐기물로부터 코발트와 리튬의 침출을 연구하였다. 혼합 호산성 박테리아의 성장기질은 단체 황 및 2가 철이온으로 구성되어 있으며 미생물에 의한 금속의 침출은 폐기물에 존재하는 금속과 황산이온의 양자 반응 때문에 일어난다. 본 연구에서 12일간 미생물 침출반응시 고상 폐기물중 코발트의 80%, 리튬의 20%가 용해되었으며 고액비가 높을수록 금속의 독성으로 인하여 미생물의 성장은 억제된다. 단체 황의 농도가 높을 조건에서는 일부 황 분말이 용해되지 않으며 금속의 침출속도는 황의 증가에 따라 감소한다.

  • Interest in the future of the battery market is growing as Tesla announces plans to increase production of electric vehicles and to produce batteries. Tesla announced an action plan to reduce battery prices by 56% through 'Battery Day', which included expansion of factories to internalize batteries and improvement of materials and production technology. In the trend of automobile electrification, the expansion of the battery market, which accounts for 40% of the cost of electric vehicles, is inevitable, and the size of the electric vehicle battery market in 2026 is expected to increase more than five times compared to 2016. With the development of materials and process technology, the energy density of electric vehicle batteries is increasing while the price is decreasing. Soon, electric vehicles and internal combustion locomotives are expected to compete on the same line. Recently, the mileage of electric vehicles is approaching that of an internal combustion locomotive due to the installation of high-capacity batteries. In the EV battery market, Korean, Chinese and Japanese companies are fiercely competing. Based on market share in the first half of 2020, LG Chem, CATL, and Panasonic are leading the EV battery supply, and the top 10 companies included 3 Korean companies, 5 Chinese companies, and 2 Japanese companies. All-solid, lithium-sulfur, sodium-ion, and lithium air batteries are being discussed as the next-generation batteries after lithium-ion, among which all-solid-state batteries are the most active. All-solid-state batteries can dramatically improve stability and charging speed by using a solid electrolyte, and are excellent in terms of technology readiness level (TRL) among various technology alternatives. In order to increase the competitiveness of the battery industry in the future, efforts to increase the productivity and economy of electric vehicle batteries are also required along with the development of next-generation battery technology.
