Solution-Derived Hafnium Lanthanum Oxide Films Prepared Using Ion-Beam Irradiation and Their Applications as Alignment Layers for Twisted-Nematic Liquid Crystal Displays

  • We present the alignment characteristics of LC (liquid crystal) molecules on solution-derived HLO (hafnium lanthanum oxide) films fabricated using IB (ion-beam) irradiation. We then demonstrated that LC molecules can be homogeneously and uniformly aligned on the HLO film irradiated at an IB incident energy of 1.2 keV. Physicochemical analysis methods such as atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to verify the LC alignment mechanism on the IB-irradiated HLO film. In addition, the electro-optical performance of a TN (twisted-nematic) cell fabricated using the IB-irradiated HLO film exhibited characteristics superior to those of the conventional TN cell fabricated using a rubbed polyimide layer.

  • Heat transfer characteristics of a pair of longitudinal vortices using a transient liquid crystal technique are studied experimentally. In order to control the strength of longitudinal vortices, angle of attack of the vortex generators is $20^{\circ}$and the length of space from the centerline the vortex generations is 25mm apart. The heat transfer measurements using a transfer coefficients. The following conclusions are obtained from the present experiment. When any vortex generators are not set up in wind tunnel test, heat transfer rate is low respectively. However, with the vortex generators of rectangular winglet, the heat transfer on the local surface can be enhanced.

저온 공정의 Si을 이용한 PI 배향 막의 전기광학 특성 향상에 대한 연구 (Si Induced Polymer Based Alignment Layer for Liquid Crystal Orientations with High Electro-Optic Properties at Low Temperature)

  • Apart from the deposition of alignment layer, alignment process needs to be involved for alignment of liquid crystal (LC) molecules. To simplify manufacturing process, several method were used such as rubbing, ion-beam irradiation, UV irradiation, and lithography. But, eventually it needs another treatment for LC alignment. Here, we suggested Si induced polyimide (PI) alignment layer at low temperature. Using this method, we are able to eliminate the alignment process and found that the alignment and electro-optic performance are much better than that of the rubbed PI LC cells. Compared to the rubbed PI cells, the response time was decreased by 70% and C-V characteristics have hysteresis-free.

  • Quantitative data of the temperature and velocity were obtained simultaneously by using liquid crystal tracer. PIV(Particle Image Velocimety) based on a grey-level cross-correlation method was used for visualizing and analysis of the flow field. The temperature gradient was obtained by applying the color-image processing to a visualized image, and a neural-network a1gorithm was applied to the color-to-temperature calibration. This simultaneous measurement was applied to the Rayleigh-Bernard convection. This paper describes the method, and presents the quantitative visualization of Rayleigh-Bernard convection and the effect of aspect ratio and viscosity. Also the experimental results were compared with the numerical results.

  • 부상응고법은 액상 받침 재료 위에 용융 재료를 띄워서 응고시키는 방법으로 판유리 제조가 대표적이며, 이러한 방법을 이용하여 Si 판재를 얻기 위한 실험을 하였다. 본 연구에서는 액상받침재료에 요구되는 물리 화학적인 성질을 고려하여 3원계 산화물 상태도를 조사한 후, 적절한 액상받침재료로 50 wt% $SiO_2$- 2l wt% $A1_2$$O_3$-29 wt% MnO를 이용하였다. 실험결과 본 연구에서 이용한 받침재료는 온도와 밀도, Si의 반응성 면에서 적절한 성질을 나타내었으나, 유동도 및 계면 장력면에서 문제점을 나타내었다.

  • It is analyzed with regard to LCD in Korea that national patent application, applicant patent application, IPC patent application. The Trends of patent application concentrated LCD manufacturing process and device, case and a cell of liquid crystal. Therefore, the future research and developments must be centralized these ranges. It is needed for competitive power and original technology that the search and analysis of the previous patent.

LCD의 광시야각 기술개발 및 최신동향 (Recent trend of wide viewing angle technology on liquid crystal display)

  • 본 논문에서는 최근 LCD소자에 있어서 큰 이슈로 등장한 표면 액정배향기술 및 광시야각 기술에 관하여 설명하였다. 표면 액정배향기술에 있어서는 종래의 러빙법에 대신하여 편광된 자외선을 조사하여 액정분자를 배열시키는 광배향제어법이 큰 기대를 모으고 있으며, 이 기술은 프리틸트 각 발생제어기술과 신뢰성이 과제로 남아있다. 광시야각 기술에 있어서는 최근까지 여러 방식이 제안되어왔으며 그 중에서도 현재로는 광학보상법, IPS방식 등이 실용화가 진행되고 있다. 그러나 향후 다른 방식의 기술발전 여부에 따라 상황이 변화될 것으로 예상된다. 각각의 방식에 따라 서로 장단점을 지니고 있어 향후 이용분야에 따라 용도를 나누어서 응용될 것으로 기대되어진다. LCD소자는 이러한 기술개발의 결과로 평판디스플레이 소자 중에서 더욱 확고한 위치를 확보할 것이며 더 많은 시장성을 점유할 것으로 전망된다. 이상으로 본 논문에서는 LCD소자의 표면액정 배향기술 및 광시야각 기술에 관하여 해설하였으며 표면액정 배향기술에 관하여는 간단히 소개하였으나 이 내용에 관하여는 다음 기회에 상세히 소개하기로 한다.

Ellipsometric Characterization of Rubbed Polyimide Alignment Layer in Relation with Distribution of Liquid Crystal Molecules in Twisted Nematic Cell

  • Ultra-small optical anisotropy of a rubbed polyimide (PI) alignment layer is quantitatively characterized using the improved reflection ellipsometer. Twisted nematic (TN) cells are fabricated using the rubbed PIs of known surface anisotropy as alignment layers. Distribution of liquid crystal (LC) molecules in the TN cell is characterized using transmission ellipsometry. The retardation of the rubbed PI surface increases as rubbing strength increases. The tilt angle of the optic axis of the rubbed PI surface decreases as rubbing strength especially as the angular speed of the rubbing roller increases. Pretilt angle of LC molecules in the TN cell shows strong correlation with tilt angle of the optic axis of the rubbed PI surface. Both the apparent order parameter and the effective twist angle of the LC molecules in the TN cell decrease as the pretilt angle of LC molecules increases.

자가발전 스마트 액정 윈도우를 위한 염료감응 태양전지 서브 모듈 설계 및 평가 (Design and Evaluation of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Submodule for Self-Powered Smart Liquid Crystal Window)

  • The possibility of a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) submodule was evaluated as an independent power source that can drive a smart liquid crystal window (SLW) that selectively blocks sunlight when electricity is applied. In order to save energy and increase the functionality of buildings, SLW operation was supplied directly from DSSC submodule, rather than connecting to the existing power system and external power sources. It was confirmed that the SLW can control light transmittance through self-generation using the DSSC submodule composed of 6 cells at low light of 2,500 lux. These results imply that there is a high possibility of combining smart windows and DSSCs suitable for window-type building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems. DSSCs, which can self-generate power in low light, are expected to increase their usability in urban BIPV systems through combination with smart window technology.

  • 본 연구에서는 LCD 백라이트용 휘도향상 편광필름으로 사용하기 위해, 콜레스테릭 액정(CLC)을 합성하여 네미틱 액정과 혼합한 다음 이들이 충진된 모듈을 제작하였다. 광확산필름에 의해 면광원화된 빛을 통과시킬 때, LCD 백라이트상에서 이들의 투과광 증폭 및 편광능력에 대한 특성을 연구하였다. 합성된 콜레스테릭 액정의 특성은 UV/Visible 스펙트럼과 편광현미경(POM) 등으로 평가하였다. 여러 종류의 선형 카르복실산을 콜레스테롤 분자에 도입하여 콜레스테릭 메소젠 사이의 유연격자를 이루도록 유도하여 각 층에서 일정한 방향성을 유지하도록 하였다. 또한 CLC필름을 적층하여 가시광선대에서 편광능력, 휘도향상 및 투과파장영역을 넓히고 백라이트 유니트의 밝기를 향상시키는 모듈로 적용할 수 있었다.
