This paper proposes an opportunistic subchannel allocation (OSA) scheme for relay-based marine communication networks to improve a sum-rate capacity. In most previous works for relay-based networks, each RS delivers the data received from the BS immediately to the corresponding ships in each frame. The achievable data-rate of the two-hop transmission (BS-RS and RS-ship links) is thus limited by the channel quality between BS-RS and RS-ship links. Hence, the radio resources can be wasted according to the difference in the channel quality between the BS-RS link and the RS-ship link. The proposed OSA scheme reduces the waste of radio resources by efficiently and independently allocating the radio resources at the BS-RS link and at the RS-ship link according to the channel quality of each link. The proposed OSA scheme, however, increases the computational complexity, because the BS finds the optimal OFDMA resource by checking the channel quality of all BS-RS links and RS-ship links. The simulation results show that the sum-rate capacity of the proposed OSA scheme improves maximum 14.0% compared with the conventional scheme.

Recent wireless communication trends have emphasized the importance of energy-efficient transmission. In this paper, link adaptation with machine learning mechanism for maximum energy efficiency in multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(MIMO-OFDM) wireless system is considered. For reflecting frequency-selective MIMO-OFDM channels, two-dimensional capacity(2D-CAP) feature space is proposed. In addition, machine-learning-based bit and power adaptation(ML-BPA) algorithm that performs classification-based link adaptation is presented. Simulation results show that 2D-CAP feature space can represent channel conditions accurately and bring noticeable improvement in link adaptation performance. Compared with other feature spaces, including ordered postprocessing signal-to-noise ratio(ordSNR) feature space, 2D-CAP has distinguished advantages in either efficiency performance or computational complexity.
In steel frame-tube structures (SFTSs) the application of flexural beam is not suitable for the beam with span-to-depth ratio lower than five because the plastic hinges at beam-ends can not be developed properly. This can lead to lower ductility and energy dissipation capacity of the SFTS. To address this problem, a replaceable shear link, acting as a ductile fuse at the mid length of deep beams, is proposed. SFTS with replaceable shear links (SFTS-RSLs) dissipate seismic energy through shear deformation of the link. In order to evaluate this proposal, buildings were designed to compare the seismic performance of SFTS-RSLs and SFTSs. Several sub-structures were selected from the design buildings and finite element models (FEMs) were established to study their hysteretic behavior. Static pushover and dynamic analyses were undertaken in comparing seismic performance of the FEMs for each building. The results indicated that the SFTS-RSL and SFTS had similar initial lateral stiffness. Compared with SFTS, SFTS-RSL had lower yield strength and maximum strength, but higher ductility and energy dissipation capacity. During earthquakes, SFTS-RSL had lower interstory drift, maximum base shear force and story shear force compared with the SFTS. Placing a shear link at the beam mid-span did not increase shear lag effects for the structure. The SFTS-RSL concentrates plasticity on the shear link. Other structural components remain elastic during seismic loading. It is expected that the SFTS-RSL will be a reliable dual resistant system. It offers the benefit of being able to repair the structure by replacing damaged shear links after earthquakes.

We derive the outage probabilities for the Erlang capacity and link margin based on handoffs in the reverse link of a CDMA system of 14.4 kbps/1.9 GHz band, calculate them with the same parameters, and then with the maximum realizable Erlang capacity analyze newly the cell coverage in different areas by the COST-231 model If it decreases from 5 % to 2 % in case of $E_b/N_0$=5 dB under a soft handoff, the result shows a very reliable link with additional increment of 0.88 dB in the margin and a high quality of service within the coverage decrease of 0.12 km, 0.25 km, and 1 km in a city, suburban, and open areas respectively on the decrease of 2 Erlang in the capacity. When the $E_b/N_0$ decreases from 7 dB to 5 dB within the outage probability of 5 %, it shows the increase of 9 Erlang and of 0.2 km in a city on the same margin of 2.8 dB. Then, comparing it with a single cell, it shows the decrease of more than 10 Erlang in the capacity, but the enlargement of 0.17 km, 0.3 km, and 1 km in them on the margin decrease of 1.31 dB, also, with a hard handoff, the soft handoff gain of the increase of 10 Erlang and of 0.22 km, 0.5 km, and 2 km on the decrease of 2.16 dB.
A satellite RF communication link is analyzed based on a simple fundamental equations by systematic approach in this paper. The number of variables related to a design and analysis of satellite RF link is often a dozen or more, thus it is a tedious and time-consuming task. With the given input data, the important parameters are calculated step by step and three communication characteristics such as communication channel capacity, carrier-to-noise ratio(CNR) at the satellite and ground station are analyzed. It gives very useful information to the system engineers for designing and analyzing the overall satellite communication system in the conceptual design phase.

A network, where links have different capacities, is considered to be in functioning state if a specified amount of flow can be transmitted through the network. In this paper, we consider the measures of importance of a link in such networks. We define the structural importance and reliability importance of a link when the required amount of flow is given. We also present the performability importance, which can be used to determine which links should be improved first in order to make the greatest improvement in the expected maximum flow of network. Numerical examples are presented as well for illustrative purpose.

In this paper, we focused on the performance of reverse link in 1.8GHz CDMA 1x system including the Tower-Mount LNA in an urban environment. In order to study the benefit of TMLNA, Hata model is used and the effects of multiple cells are considered. Cell coverage extension ratio is proportional to the increased gain of TMLNA in CDMA cell site. However the cell coverage is not extended even if the noise figure of TMLNA is reduced in an urban area. When typical RSSI is between -70dBm and -80dBm, the increased gain and the reduced NF of TMLNA are not impact to the pole capacity of cell site. Namely, the benefit of TMLNA in an urban area is not the problem of capacity but the proble of sensitivity. The results are also shown that reverse link $E_b/N_o$ is improved by minimum 5dB and BER is lower than $10^{-6}$.

This paper presents a new analytical approach for the evaluation of the reverse link interference in a CDMA cellular system with unequal cell loading. In particular, the dynamic nature of the reverse link power control has been taken into account in the proposed approach so that a realistic effect of unequal cell loading, including the shadowing and soft handoff, on system capacity may be precisely captured. This is aspect that has not beensuccessfully formmulated and rarely attempted tosolve in any previous analytical approach. Our computational result shows that as the loading of every tier of surrounding cells is doubled, the subscriber capacity of the reference cell can be reduced as much as 27% of that obtained in the case that the effect of power control is not appropriately modeled.

In this paper, we propose a channel assignment scheme for reducing call blocking rate in a base station(BS) of DS-CDMA cellular systems. The proposed scheme can e applied to the case where the capacity of reverse radio link is enough, but not are the available traffic channels performing the digital modulation and demodulation functions between a mobile station and the base station. The proposed scheme takes advantage of the feature of soft handoff in which a mobile station keeps its communication link even if one of the two communication links is released. The scheme estimates the mean and variance of the received power level measured at the base station before assigning a traffic channel for a new call request. The BS makes decision based on the estimated balues whether the new call request will be accepted or not. If it is decided that the capacity of reverse radio link is enough, but all traffic channels are not available, then the BS increases the soft handoff parameter T_DROP to release the traffic channels of mobile stations loactedin soft handoff area. The BS assigns the released traffic channel to anew call or a handoff call. The performance of the proposed channel assignment scheme is evaluated by computer simulation. The results show that the call blocking rate for new calls and handoff calls is reduced.
Plastic deformation of link beams in eccentrically braced frames is the primary dissipating source of seismic energy. Despite the excellent compatibility with the architectural designs, previous researches indicate the deficiency of flexural yielding links compared to the shear yielding ones because of their localized plastic deformation. Previous investigations have shown that implementing web openings in beams could be an efficient method to improve the seismic performance of moment-resisting connections. Accordingly, this research investigates the use of flexural links with stiffened and un-stiffened web openings to eliminate localized plasticity at the ends of the link. For this purpose, the numerical models are generated in finite element software "Abaqus" and verified against experimental data gathered from other studies. Models are subjected to cyclic displacement history to evaluate their behavior. Failure of the numerical models under cyclic loading is simulated using a micromechanical based damage model known as Cyclic Void Growth Model (CVGM). The elastic stiffness and the strength-based and CVGM-based inelastic rotation capacity of the links are compared to evaluate the studied models' seismic response. The results of this investigation indicate that some of the flexural links with edge stiffened web openings show increased inelastic rotation capacity compared to an un-perforated link.
