  • This paper deals with free vibrations of the tapered beams with the constant surface area. The surface area of the objective beams are always held constant regardless shape functions of the cross-sectional depth. The shape functions are chosen as the linear and parabolic ones. Ordinary differential equations governing free vibrations of such beams are derived and solved numerically for determining the natural frequencies. In the numerical examples, hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end constraints are considered. As the numerical results, the relationships between non-dimensional frequency parameters and various beam parameters such as section ratio, surface area ratio, end constraint and taper type are reported in tables and figures. Especially, section ratios of the strongest beam are calculated, under which the maximum frequencies are achieved.

  • This paper is concerned with the dynamic modeling for the hardware-in-the-loop simulation of lateral vibrations of a railway vehicle. The resulting dynamic model is a nine degree-of-freedom model which can describe the lateral, roll and yaw motions of the car body and two bogies. It is assumed that the external disturbances come from wheel motions. In order to test the efficacy of the model, the linear quadratic regulator and the sky-hook control algorithm were designed and applied to the model. The simulation results show that both control algorithms are effective in suppressing the vibrations of railway vehicles.

  • The longitudinal and lateral in-plane vibrations of an axially moving membrane are investigated when the membrane has translating acceleration. By extended Hamilton's principle, the governing equations are derived. The equations of motion for the in-plane vibrations are linear and coupled. These equations are discretized by using the Galerkin approximation method after they are transformed into the variational equations, j.e., the weak forms so that the admissible functions can be used for the bases of the in-plane deflections. With the discretized equations for the in-plane vibrations, the natural frequencies and the time histories of the deflections are obtained.

  • With the use of differential quadrature method (DQM), forced vibrations and resonance frequency analysis of functionally graded (FG) nano-size beams rested on elastic substrate have been studied utilizing a shear deformation refined beam theory which contains shear deformations influence needless of any correction coefficient. The nano-size beam is exposed to uniformly-type dynamical loads having partial length. The two parameters elastic substrate is consist of linear springs as well as shear coefficient. Gradation of each material property for nano-size beam has been defined in the context of Mori-Tanaka scheme. Governing equations for embedded refined FG nano-size beams exposed to dynamical load have been achieved by utilizing Eringen's nonlocal differential law and Hamilton's rule. Derived equations have solved via DQM based on simply supported-simply supported edge condition. It will be shown that forced vibrations properties and resonance frequency of embedded FG nano-size beam are prominently affected by material gradation, nonlocal field, substrate coefficients and load factors.

  • This paper is intended to show the robustness and capabilities of a coupled boundary element-finite element technique for the analysis of vibrations generated by high-speed trains under different geometrical, mechanical and operation conditions. The approach has been developed by the authors and some results have already been presented. Nevertheless, a more comprehensive study is presented in this paper to show the relevance and robustness of the method which is able to predict vibrations due to train passage at the vehicle, the track, the free-field and any structure close to the track. Local soil discontinuities, underground constructions such as underpasses, and coupling with nearby structures that break the uniformity of the geometry along the track line can be represented by the model. Non-linear behaviour of the structures can be also considered. Results concerning the excitation mechanisms, track behaviour and sub-Rayleigh and super-Rayleigh train speed are summarized in this work.

  • The possibility of adopting vibration-powered wireless nodes has been largely investigated in the last years. Among the available technologies based on the piezoelectric effect, the most common ones consist of a vibrating beam covered by electroactive layers. Another energy harvesting strategy is based on the use of piezoelectric strips attached to a hosting structure subjected to dynamic loads. The hosting structure, for example, can be the system to be equipped with wireless nodes. Such strategy has received few attentions so far and no analytical studies have been presented yet. Hence, the original contribution of the present paper is concerned with the development of analytical solutions for the electrodynamic analysis and design of piezoelectric polymeric strips attached to relatively large linear elastic structural systems subjected to random vibrations at the base. Specifically, it is assumed that the dynamics of the hosting structure is dominated by the fundamental vibration mode only, and thus it is reduced to a linear elastic single-degree-of-freedom system. On the other hand, the random excitation at the base of the hosting structure is simulated by filtering a white Gaussian noise through a linear second-order filter. The electromechanical force exerted by the polymeric strip is negligible compared with other forces generated by the large hosting structure to which it is attached. By assuming a simplified electrical interface, useful new exact analytical expressions are derived to assess the generated electric power and the integrity of the harvester as well as to facilitate its optimum design.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate both the fundamental and some higher natural frequencies and mode shapes of compressive members resting on the linear elastic foundation. The model of compressive member is based on the classical Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. The differential equation governing free vibrations of such members subjected to an axial load is derived and solved numerically for calculating the natural frequencies and mode shapes. The Improved Euler method is used to integrate the differential equation and the Determinant Search method combined with the Regula-Falsi method to determine the natural frequencies, respectively. In numerical examples, the hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, clamped-hinged and clamped-clamped end constraints are considered. The convergence analysis is conducted for determining the available step size in the Improved Euler method. The validation of theories developed herein is also conducted by comparing the numerical results between this study and SAP 90. The non-dimensional frequency parameters are presented as the non-dimensional system parameters: section ratio, modulus parameter and load parameter. Also typical mode shapes are presented.
