In order to achieve a gearless construction of the wind energy conversion system(WECS), a low-speed generator should be used. Of the various candidate machine types, radial-field, multi-pole, permanent magnet, synchronous machines may be used for low-speed applications. So, this paper deals with the design of direct-coupled, multi-pole radial field machines with permanent magnet(PM) excitation for wind power applications for cogging torque reduction through the determination of optimum pole arc/pitch ratio. On the basis of an equivalent magnetic circuit method(EMCM) and a space harmonic method(SHM), an initial design is performed considering restricted conditions. And then, a detailed design is made using a non-linear finite element analyses(FEA). Finally, test results concerning generating characteristics are given to confirm the validation of the design.
This paper proposes a robust optimal nonlinear control with an observer to reject the offset errors of position tracking for surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors. We provide the control method to reject offset errors and load torque for designing field oriented control (FOC) based the alternating current (AC) frame. The proposed method consists of a torque generator, a commutation scheme, an electrical controller, and a load torque observer. The mechanical controller is designed to compensate for load torque and the offset error and generate the desired torque. The commutation scheme is proposed to create the desired currents for the desired torque. The electrical controller is developed to guarantee the desired currents. The observer is designed to estimate both the velocity and the load torque. In order to obtain the robustness to parameter uncertainties and a gain tuning guide, the linear quadratic regulator method is applied to the proposed method. The closed-loop stability is proven. A detailed process for the FOC design and an analysis of the control methods based on the AC frame are presented. The performance of the proposed method was validated via experiments. The proposed method obtains the FOC based on the AC frame. Furthermore, the position tracking performance of the proposed method is superior to that of the conventional method.
For the location estimation in the conventional LPMS(Loose Parts Monitoring System), it is popular to employ a group delay among the acoustic sensors installed within a 3 ft range from the impact source. However, there exists inherent error in determining the arrival time differences of the generated wave group among the neighboring sensors. To overcome this problem in this study, the two dimensional approach has been proposed and applied to effectively estimate the arrival time differences by using a continuous wavelet transform which is one of the linear time-frequency analysis methods. The experiment has been performed to both the plate model and the real steam generator in a nuclear power plant. It is expected that the reliability of the location estimation could be enhanced when the proposed time-frequency method is introduced into the LPMS system.
Power-take-off through inner dynamic system inside a floating buoy is suggested. The power take-off system is characterized by mass, stiffness, and damping and generates power through the relative heave motion between the buoy and inner mass (magnet or amateur). A systematic hydrodynamic theory is developed for the suggested WEC and the developed theory is illustrated by a case study. A vertical truncated cylinder is selected as a buoy and the optimal condition of the inner dynamic system for maximum PTO (power take off) through double resonance for the given wave condition is systematically investigated. Through the case study, it is seen that the maximum power can actually be obtained at the optimal spring and damper condition, as predicted by the developed WEC theory. However, the band-width of high performance region is not necessarily the greatest at the optimal (maximum-power-take-off) condition, so it has to be taken into consideration in the actual design of the WEC.
In this paper, we investigate many types of stability, like (uniform stability, exponential stability and h-stability) of the first order dynamic equations of the form $$\{u^{\Delta}(t)=Au(t)+f(t),\;\;t{\in}{\mathbb{T}},\;t>t_0\\u(t_0)=x{\in}D(A),$$ and $$\{u^{\Delta}(t)=Au(t)+f(t,u),\;\;t{\in}{\mathbb{T}},\;t>t_0\\u(t_0)=x{\in}D(A),$$ in terms of the stability of the homogeneous equation $$\{u^{\Delta}(t)=Au(t),\;\;t{\in}{\mathbb{T}},\;t>t_0\\u(t_0)=x{\in}D(A),$$ where f is rd-continuous in $t{\in}{\mathbb{T}}$ and with values in a Banach space X, with f(t, 0) = 0, and A is the generator of a $C_0$-semigroup $\{T(t):t{\in}{\mathbb{T}}\}{\subset}L(X)$, the space of all bounded linear operators from X into itself. Here D(A) is the domain of A and ${\mathbb{T}}{\subseteq}{\mathbb{R}}^{{\geq}0}$ is a time scale which is an additive semigroup with property that $a-b{\in}{\mathbb{T}}$ for any $a,b{\in}{\mathbb{T}}$ such that a > b. Finally, we give illustrative examples.
In this paper, a comprehensive investigation of the dynamic response of a long-bridge subjected to spatially varying earthquake ground motions (SVEGM) is performed based on a proposed analytical model which includes the effect of soil-structure interaction (SSI). The spatial variability of ground motions is simulated by the powerful record generator, SIMQKE II. Modeling of the SSI in the system is simplified by replacing the pile foundations and soil with sets of independent equivalent linear springs and dashpots along the pile groups. One of the most fundamental objectives of this study is to examine how well the proposed model simulates the dynamic response of a bridge system. For this purpose, the baseline data required for the evaluation process is derived from analyzing a 3D numerical model of the bridge system which is validated in this paper. To emphasize the importance of the SVEGM and SSI, bridge responses are also determined for the uniform ground motion and fixed base cases. This study proposing a compatible analytical model concerns the relative importance of the SSI and SVEGM and shows that these effects cannot be neglected in the seismic analysis of long-bridges.
