This paper describes a numerical analysis of the light scattering patterns of roughness profiles. This analysis was based upon the light scattering theory developed by Beckmann. In the analysis, the roughness profile was regarded as a profile whose irregularities depend on the production process and the shape of cutting tool. Generally, waviness of an actual surface seriously distorts the scattered pattern of roughness profile. In order to avoid the effects of waviness of actual surfaces, several theoretically calculated scattering patterns, instead of actual scattering patterns, were used to analyze the scattering patterns of typical engineering roughness profiles. The characteristics of the light scattering patterns for five model surfaces were studied.

Light scattering measurement system that can evaluate light scattering characteristic from defects on silicon wafer surface has been developed. The system uses $Ar^+$ laser as an illumination source, and a highly sensitive photomultiplier tube (PMT) for detecting scattered light from defects. Unlike with conventional measurement system, our system has ability to measure scattered light pattern from wide range of scattering angles with changeable incidence condition. It is shown that our developed system is effective to discriminate the types and sizes of defects from basic experimental results using a microscatch and a PSL sphere.
In this study, indoor $PM_{10}$ concentration was measured by different type of real-time instruments in public transport vehicles. Light-scattering method is widely used in measuring the size of particulate matters and there is two types of light-scattering methods; one is the nephelometer type which measures the light-scattering degree by aerosol cloud, the other is the spectrometer type which measures light-scattering degree by individual particle. We observed the variation of $PM_{10}$ in KTX, subway and express bus carriages by 1-minute resolution and found that there is similar tendency in pattern among 4 light-scattering devices but difference in absolute concentrations. By comparing gravimetric result in a subway cabin, the spectrometer type device, C, was chosen as a reference device. The conversion factors of nephelometer device A-1, A-2, and B were 1.666, 1.463 and 2.125 respectively.
Clotting properties of human blood are important clinical information to monitor for patients with platelet and coagulation disorders. Most devices used to diagnose these disorders utilize blood plasma together with tissue factors and $Ca^{{+}{+}}$ additives. In some instruments, magnetic particles were mixed with blood samples and a rotating magnetic field was applied, resulting in the rotation of magnetic particles, which was probed by impinging light. The working principle seems obvious yet had not been investigated in depth. We modeled the collective behavior of light propagating through magnetic needles, aligned in the direction of the rotating external magnetic field, with scattering light analysis software. Simulation results indicated that the scattering pattern undergoes periodic undulations with respect to the slant angle of the magnetic needles. Also provided is a means of extracting meaningful information from the scattering measurement.

Dot pattern print methods composed of a diffusion film and two prism sheets, have been generally used for backlighting systems of LCDs. However, this methods require complex structures and show high power consumption and optical loss. To improve these disadvantages of conventional backlight units, light guides using highly scattering optical transmissions (HSOT) polymer as scatters, have been introduced. In this study we analyzed multiple scattering effect in light guide by means of Monte carlo simulation based on Mie scattering theory and ray tracing method. As a result it was revealed that scattering intensity depends on the size of scatters. On the other hands, it was shown that scattering efficiency depends on the wavelength of fluorescent lamp as well as the size of scatters.

In this paper, patterns of laser scattering and detection of micro defects have been investigated based on Rayleigh criterion for silicon wafer in solar cell. Also, a new laser scattering mechanism is designed using characteristics of light scattering against silicon wafer surfaces. Its parameters are to be optimally selected to obtain effective and featured patterns of laser scattering. The optimal parametric ranges of laser scattering are determined using the mean intensity of laser scattering. Scattering patterns of micro defects are investigated at the extracted parameter region. Among a lot of pattern features, both maximum connected area and number of connected component in patterns of laser scattering are regarded as the important information for detecting micro defects. Their usefulness is verified in the experiment.
Coarse clumping of solid materials within diseased biological cells can have a marked influence on the light scattering pattern. Perturbations in refractive index lead to distinct variations in the cytometric signature, especially apparent over wide scattering angles. The large dynamic range of scattering intensities restricts collection of data to narrow angular intervals believed to have the highest potential for medical diagnosis. We propose the use of an interference filter to reduce the dynamic range. Selective attenuation of scattering intensity levels is expected to allow simultaneous data collection over a wide angular interval. The calculated angular transmittance of a commercial shortwave-pass filter of cut-off wavelength 580 nm indicates significant attenuation of scattering peaks below ${\~}\;10^{circ}$, and reasonable peak equalization at higher angles. For the three-dimensional calculation of laser light scattered by cells we use a spectral method code that models cells as spatially varying dielectrics, stationary in time. However, we perform preliminary experimental testing with the interference filter on polystyrene microspheres instead of biological cells. A microfluidic toolkit is used for the manipulation of the microspheres. The paper intends to illustrate the principle of a light scattering detection system incorporating an interference filter for selective attenuation of scattering peaks.

Described is method for development of an optical roughness measurement sensor for in-subequality assurance in the precision grinding. Main approach is made based upon the Brckmann's light scattering theory, in which general solutions of the optical scattering behaviour are given under many simplifying assumptions on the model of the surfaces illuminated. For the ground surface, the assumptions are verified through computer simulation and experimental work in order to examine the validity of Beckmann's theory on predicting the optical responses according to the roughness variation. As a result, an optical monitoring strategy is derived which can evaluate the roughness value of the ground surface by statistically detecting the pattern of intensity distribution of the scattered light. Finally, the strategy is proven by comparing with the results using the stylus method.

In-Building communication network is realized by spherical reflector installed on the ceiling and a pair of circularly polarized antennas. Before realizing the system, the scattering characteristics of a spherical conductor is computed and experimented. In this paper, the computational results using vector spherical wave equation and experimental results of the scattering characteristics of a spherical conductor are dicussed. From the results, the omnidirectional scattering level is confirmed and polarity difference over 13 dB is ensured in light region. With the base on omnidirectional scattering pattern of spherical conductor in light region, spherical reflector is effectable in as Wireless In-Building communication network.

Complete blood cell count(CBC) is a technique that counts leukocytes for each type of blood cell being analyzed. The principle is that laser is incident to ex vivo flowing leukocytes in a microcapillary tube and scattered light occurs by laser and leukocytes. By collecting the scattered light, we can count the types of cells because different cells generate different light-scattering patterns. However, the technique has an intrinsic limitation, scattering pattern is shown in a wide range region in the resulting, which makes it difficult to accurate analyze and use fluorescent dyes. To overcome this limitation, a new design of CBC with a dual laser, which irradiates with orthogonal angles for collecting quad-scattering information was proposed. Before development, the scattering difference depending on wavelength must be investigated to only catch up to the scattered signal by angles. Some studies, which focused on simple particles, have been conducted to theoretically and experimentally investigate different scatterings by wavelength. In this study, we propose an optical system for measuring scattered light and investigate a complex particle. As a result, the green laser made strong scattering signals in both the forward and side direction: 10% and 30%, respectively.
