  • The hydraulic servo actuator has always operated very precisely with high frequency and small displacement, and is used continuously for a long time. The hydraulic servo actuator of the test equipment used in the accelerated life test in order to guarantee the service life of the automotive parts failed earlier than the products before finishing the test. This study performed an analysis on the cause of the failure of the hydraulic servo actuator used in the test equipment, changed the design of the actuator to solve the root cause of the main failure mode, and developed the improved servo actuator. Based on above process, this study established a better performances and longer lifetime of the servo actuator after testing.

  • A reliability acceptance sampling plan (RASP) consists of a set of life test procedures and rules for eitheraccepting or rejecting a collection of items based on the sampled lifetime data. Most of the existing RASPs areconcerned with the case where test items are available at the same time. However, as in the early stage ofproduct development, it may be difficult to secure test items at the same time. In such a case, it is inevitable toconduct a life test using sequentially supplied samples. In this paper, it is assumed that test items are sequentially supplied, the lifetimes of test items follow anexponential disthbution, failures are monitored continuously, arrival times of test items are known, and thenumber of test items at each arrival time is given. Under these assumptions, RASPs are developed by deter-mining the test completion time and the critical value for the maximum likelihood estimator of the mean lifetimesuch that the producer and consumer risks are satisfied. Then, the developed plans are compared to thetraditional Type-I censored RASPs in terms of the test completion time. Computational results indicate that thetest completion time of the developed RASP is shorter than that of the traditional Type-I censored plan in mostcases considered. It is also found that the superiority of the developed RASP becomes more prominent as theinter-arrival times of test items increase and/or the total number of test items gets larger.

  • Recently, life prediction models for Pb-based and Pb-free solders used in chip resistor assemblies under thermal cycling have been introduced. The models suggest that the field lifetimes of Pb-free solders would be better than those of Pb-based solders when used for chip resistors under thermal cycling conditions, while the lifetime of the chip assemblies under accelerated test conditions show a reverse relationship. In this study, the prediction models were verified by applying the model to another research case. Finite element models were built, thermal cycling conditions were applied, and the energy densities were calculated. Finally, life prediction analysis was conducted for the cases where Pb-based and Pb-free solders were used. The prediction results were then compared with the test data of the case. It was verified that the predictions of the developed life cycle models are on the practical scale.

  • Successive and simultaneous sudden death tests are compared with the complete and Type II censored samples in terms of expected test duration and Total Time on Test(TTT) subject to the same number of failures in order to maintain the equal statistical precision under Weibull lifetime distribution with known shape parameter. Also, two sudden death tests under a proposed cost model are discussed and a numerical example is provided to illustrate the use of the proposed cost model.

  • This study considers the design of life test sampling inspection plans by attributes for failure rate level qualification at selected confidence level. The lifetime distribution of products is assumed to be exponential. MIL-STD-690C and KS C 6032 standards provide this procedures. But these procedures have some questions to apply in the field. The cost of test and confidence level($1-{\beta}$ risk) are the problem between supplier and user. So, we suggest that the optimal life test sampling inspection plans using expected cost model considering product cost, capability, environmental test cost, etc.

  • Fluorescent probes bound to DNA typically display nanosecond decay times and reveal only nanosecond motions. We extend the time range of measurable DNA dynamics using $[Ru(pby)_2(dppz)]^{2+}$ (bpy=2.2'-bipyridine, dppz=dipyrido[3,2-a2',3'-c]phenazine) (RuBD) which displays a mean lifetime near 90 ns. To test the usefulness of RuBD as a probe for diffusive processes in calf thymus DNA, we compared the efficiencies of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) using three donors which display lifetimes near 5 ns for acridine orange (AO), 22 ns for ethidum bromide (EB) and 92 ns for RuBD, with nile blue (NB) as the acceptor. The F rster distances for AO-NB, EB-NB and RuBD-NB donor-acceptor pairs were 42.3, 52.3, and $30.6{\;}{\AA}$, respectively. All three donors showed dramatic decreases in fluorescence intensities and more rapid intensity decays with increasing NB concentrations. The intensity decays of AO and EB in the presence of varying concentrations of NB were satisfactorily described by the one-dimensional FRET model without diffusion (Blumen and Manz, 1979). In the case of the long-lifetime donor RuBD, the experimental phase and modulation somewhat deviated from the recovered values computed from this model. The recovered NB concentrations and FRET efficiencies from the model were slightly larger than the expected values, however, the recovered and expected values did not show a significant difference. Thus, it is suggested that the lifetime of RuBD is too short to measure diffusive processes in calf thymus DNA.

  • It is necessary to both analyze root-cause of non-conformance of effective illumination time to the specification, and estimate the storage lifetime for 81 mm illuminating projectile stockpiled over 10 years. In this paper, aging mechanism of magnesium flare material due to long-term storage was supposed, and two-stage tests, pre-test and main test based on accelerated degradation tests were performed. Field storage environment of moistureproof was set up, and illumination times in the accelerated degradation tests for temperatures 60 and $70^{\circ}C$ were measured. Then, storage reliability of the projectile was estimated through analyzing the measured data and applying distribution-based degradation models to the data. The $B_{10}$ life by which 10 % of a population of the projectiles will have failed at storage temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ was estimated about 7 years.

  • This paper presents the reliability estimation of door hinge for home appliances, which consists of bushing and shaft. The predominant failure mechanism of bushing made of polyoxymethylene(POM) is brittle fracture due to decrease of strength caused by voids existing, and that of shaft made of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS) is creep due to plastic deformation caused by excessive temperature and lowering of glass transition temperature by absorbed moisture. Since the brittle fracture of bushing is overstress failure mechanism, the load-strength interference model is used to estimate the failure rate of it along with failure analysis. By the way, the creep of shaft is wearout failure mechanism, and an accelerated life test is then planned and implemented to estimate its lifetime. Through the technical review about failure mechanism, temperature and humidity are selected as accelerating variables. Assuming Weibull lifetime distribution and Eyring model, the life-stress relationship and acceleration factor, $B_{10}$ life and its lower bound with $90\%$ confidence at worst case use condition are estimated by analyzing the accelerated life test data.

  • The transmission of tracked vehicles performs complex functions as steering, shifting, braking, etc. and the system level life time has been a key influenced by the number of sub-parts like as gear assembly, torque converter, clutches, bearings and so on. In particular, the mechanical type steering system in tracked vehicle has impact shock torques in steering shift and those kind of shock torques can effect on the durability of many sub-parts in power train system. The field failure modes of gear assembly, steering assembly and the bearings of output shaft appear as a very complex phenomenon. In this study, the actual failure, which may occur in field, of the transmission was investigated comprehensively and that the endurance test on the resulting output shaft bearing failure analysis and life assessment was performed. Life time test method used in this study, developed for the purpose of the internal usage, and under these testing techniques the impact of the each bearing damage, which used in tracked vehicle transmission left / right outputs of different structures, was analyzed.
