  • This study aims to identify the effects of teachers' recognition and application of 2015 revised national curriculum on their educational information needs in high schools. Several in-depth interviews and a questionnaire survey with the teachers, who were in charge of teaching common courses, such as Korean language, mathematics, English, social studies, and science, in general public high schools in Incheon, were executed for the purpose. As a result, the teachers' recognition and application affected their educational information needs in part. Especially, new demands on small sized copies and learning information sources were identified which were related to the application of 2015 revised national curriculum. Based on the results, we proposed several improvements of school library operations, such as small sized local consortium for sharing resources and providing referral services, in order to strengthen the gateway role of school libraries.

Based on field librarians' needs and opinions about the courses, we suggested separating the required, core, and elective courses. We proposed six courses including 'Internship', 'Introduction to Library and Information Science', 'Cataloging and Classification', 'Library Management', and 'Information Retrieval' as required courses, and 5 courses including 'Practice in Cataloging and Classification', 'Information Resource and Service', 'Collection Development', 'Digital Library System', 'Introduction to Bibliography' and 'Records Management and Archives' as core courses. Finally, the remaining courses were recommended as selective courses which each department could select depending on their circumstances and faculty. The important components for substantial LIS courses are as follows: timeliness of training topics, expertise of educational contents, professionalism and qualifications of faculty, specialized educational materials, and increasing the major correlation between courses and professors.

  • The purpose of this study is to derive the implications of operating the Media and Information Literacy (MIL) curriculum in Korea through analysis of MIL curriculum and guidance in the Philippines. The Philippine Ministry of Education runs the MIL as a core subject that high school students in grades 2-3 had to complete. MIL in the Philippines is a tool curriculum that integrates information, media, and digital literacy. In the MIL curriculum, a total of 17 units are designed to be operated for a total of 80 hours, 20 weeks in a semester. And it presents two content criteria, two achievement criteria and 58 learning competencies. The implications drawn from the research results are as follows. First, the chapter presented in the MIL curriculum can be composed only of the knowledge of a higher category or core concept of subject content. Second, it is necessary to present the concept of the term used in the MIL curriculum and specific examples according to the concept. Third, it is necessary to specify the contents necessary for practice in the MIL textbook and to strengthen the competence for the function. MIL, proposed by UNESCO and designated and operated as a subject in the Philippines, needs to be designated as a subject in Korea and operated as a curriculum.
