Zeolite X adsorbents with large surface area were prepared for using oxygen PSA adsorbent. Selective adsorption performance of nitrogen on the synthesized zeolite X adsorbent was improved by the cation exchange of adsorbent. The zeolite X which had over $650m^2/g$ surface area was synthesized at the conditions of $SiO_2\;:\;Na_2O\;:\;H_2O\;:\;Al_2O_3$ = 2.5 : 3.5 : 150 : 1 mole ratio, $98^{\circ}C$ temperature and 18 h synthesized time in 50 L reactor. The metal ions Li, Ag, Ca, Br, Sr, etc. were investigated for ion exchange with zeolite X. Ag ion was showed the highest ion exchange rate among these metal ions and all metal ions were exchanged with Na ion at equivalent rate. Compared with the NaX adsorbent, the ion exchanged zeolite X adsorbent remarkably improved its adsorption performance of nitrogen at the conditions of $10{\sim}40^{\circ}C$ temperature and 0~9 atm pressure. At an equilibrium pressure under 0.5 atm, adsorption performance of nitrogen on the ion exchanged zeolite adsorbent increased in the order of Ag > Li > Ca > Sr> Ba > K, whereas at an equilibrium pressure over 1 atm showed in the order of Li > Ag > Ca > Sr > Ba > K. Nitrogen/oxygen separation factor of Li ion exchanged zeolite X adsorbent was 13.023 at the partial pressure of nitrogen/oxygen gas mixture similar to air and $20^{\circ}C$ adsorption temperature.
The honeycomb adsorbents and adsorption process for carbon dioxide removal from fuel gas were investigated. Zeolite paper was made with Na-X zeolite powder and ceramic fiber as raw materials. $Li^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ or $K^+$ ion exchanges for Na-X zeolite and additional Na-X coating were performed on zeolite paper for increasing the carbon dioxide adsorption capacity, after that the adsorption characteristics of the samples were analyzed. Among the ion exchanged samples, $Li^+$ ion exchanged zeolite paper was most promising but its carbon dioxide adsorption capacity was less than expected for process application. However, additional Na-X coating was found to be an effective method for increasing the carbon dioxide adsorption capacity of the zeolite paper for process application. The carbon dioxide breakthrough test of the honeycomb adsorbent prepared with the zeolite paper was studied, and fuel gas treatment capacity was calculated when the honeycomb adsorbent was used in the rotary adsorption process.

The synthesis and the characterization of Low Silica X (LSX) zeolite for nitrogen adsorption have been studied. The performance of LSX zeolite for nitrogen adsorption was compared to that of the commercial zeolite. The $Na_2O/(Na_2O+K_2O)$ ratio in the gel and the crystallization time were fixed as the synthetic factor. The LSX zeolite was formed at the $Na_2O/(Na_2O+K_2O)$ ratio of 0.75. The formation of LSX zeolite was confirmed by XRD and SEM. The Si/Al ratio was investigated by using XRF and FT-IR. The synthesized LSX zeolite showed a lower Si/Al ratio than the NaY and NaX zeolites although they have a same faujasite structure. The Si/Al ratio of the LSX zeolite converged close to 1. 1A (Li, Na, K) and 2A (Mg, Ca, Ba) group elements were ion-exchanged to the LSX zeolite. As the charge density of cation rises, the amount of nitrogen adsorbed increased. $Li^+$ ion-exchanged LSX zeolite showed the highest nitrogen adsorption weight. When the Li/Al ratio was over 0.65, nitrogen adsorption increased remarkably. $Li^+$ ions located on the supercage (site III, III') in the LSX zeolite played a role as nitrogen adsorption sites. When the $Ca^{2+}$ ions were added to the LiLSX zeolite by ion-exchange method, the performance for nitrogen adsorption increased more. The performance for the nitrogen adsorption was the highest at the Ca/Al ratio of 0.26. Nitrogen adsorption capacity of LiCaLSX (Ca/Al=0.26) zeolite was superior to the commercial NaX zeolite.

The dynamic characteristics of adsorption using an adsorption bed packed with Li-X zeolite (UOP) were studied through the breakthrough experiments of $H_2/CH_4$ (90:10 vol%), $H_2/CO$ (90:10 vol%) and $H_2/CO_2$ (80:20 vol%) mixtures. Effects of feed flow rate (6.24~10.24 LPM) and adsorption pressure (6.1 bar~10.1 bar) in the Li-X zeolite bed with 2.7 cm of inside diameter and 80 cm of bed length were observed. The smaller feed rate or the higher operating pressure, resulted in the longer of the breakthrough time and the breakthrough curve have tailing due to temperature variance in the bed. The adsorption dynamics of the Li-X zeolite bed were predicted by using LDF model with feed flow and pressure dependent diffusivity. The prediction and experimental data were analyzed with a nonisothermal, nonadiabatic model, dual-site langmuir (DSL) isotherm
$Li^+$ and $H^+$ co-exchanged LSXs (Li-H-LSX) with various ratios of $Li^+$ and $H^+$ were prepared, and those adsorption characteristics of nitrogen and oxygen were compared with Li-Na-LSX and Li-Ca-LSX. Li-H-LSX showed higher nitrogen capacity and selectivity than that of Li-Na-LSX in the wide range of Li-exchanged ratio. The nitrogen capacity of Li-Ca-LSX was slightly higher than that of fully Li- or Ca-exchanged LSX (Li- LSX or Ca-LSX). However, Li-Ca-LSX showed low nitrogen/oxygen adsorption selectivity until the Li content reached about 80%, which was a tendency near that of Ca-LSX.
Two single crystals of fully dehydrated partially $Li^+$-exchanged zeolite X were prepared by the exchange of Na-X, $Na_{92}Si_{100}Al_{92}O_{384}$ (Si/Al = 1.09), with $Li^+$ using aqueous 0.1 M $LiNO_3$ at 293 (crystal 1) and 333 K(crystal 2), followed by vacuum dehydration at 623 K and $1{\times}10^{-6}$ Torr for 2 days. Their structures were determined by single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction techniques in the cubic space group $Fd{\overline{3}}$ at 100(1) K. Their structures were refined using all intensities to the final error indices (using the 1281 and 883 reflections for which ($F_o$ > $4{\sigma}(F_o)$) $R_1/R_2$ = 0.075/0.244 and 0.074/0.223 for crystals 1 and 2, respectively. Their compositions are seen to be ${\mid}Li_{86}Na_6{\mid}[Si_{100}Al_{92}O_{384}]$-FAU and ${\mid}Li_{87}Na_5{\mid}[Si_{100}Al_{92}O_{384}]$-FAU, respectively. In crystal 1, 17 $Li^+$ ions per unit cell are at site I', 15 another site I', 30 at site II, and the remaining 16 at site III; 2 $Na^+$ ions are at site II and the remaining 4 at site III'. In crystal 2, 32 and 30 $Li^+$ ions per unit cell fill sites I' and II, respectively, and the remaining 25 at site III'; 2 and 3 $Na^+$ ions are found at sites II and III', respectively. The extent of $Li^+$ exchange increases slightly with increasing ion exchange temperature from 93% to 95%.

Adsorption equilibria of the gases $CO_2$, CO, $CH_4$ and $H_2$ and their binary mixtures on Li-X zeolite (UOP) were obtained by static volumetric method in the pressure range of 0 to 20 bar at temperatures of 293.15, 303.15, and 313.15 K. Using the parameter obtained from single-component adsorption isotherm. Multicomponent adsorption equilibra could be predicted and compared with experimental data. Extended Langmuir isotherm, Extended Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm (L-F) and dual-site Langmuir isotherm (DSL) were used to predict the experimental results for binary adsorption equilibria of $H_2/CO_2$, $H_2/CO$, and $H_2/CH_4$ on Li-X Zeolite. Extended Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm predicted equilibria of $CH_4$ and $H_2$ better than any other isotherm. One the other hand DSL isotherm predicted equilibria of $CO_2$ and CO very well.

Two single-crystals of fully dehydrated, partially $Li^+$-exchanged zeolites X (Si/Al = 1.09, crystal 1) and Y (Si/Al = 1.56, crystal 2), were prepared by flow method using 0.1 M $LiNO_3$ at 393 K for 48 h, respectively, followed by vacuum dehydration at 673 K and $1{\times}10^{-6}$ Torr. Their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques in the cubic space group $Fd\bar{3}$ and $Fd\bar{3}m$ at 100(1) K for crystals 1 and 2, respectively. They were refined to the final error indices $R_1/wR_2$ = 0.065/0.211 and 0.043/0.169 for crystals 1 and 2, respectively. In crystal 1, about 53 $Li^+$ ions per unit cell are found at three distinct positions; 9 at site I', 19 at another site I', and the remaining 25 at site II. The residual 25 $Na^+$ ions occupy three equipoints; 2 are at site I, 7 at site II, and 16 at site III'. In crystal 2, about 31 $Li^+$ ions per unit cell occupy sites I' and II with occupancies at 22 and 9, respectively; 3, 4, 23, and 3 $Na^+$ ions are found at sites I, I', II, and III', respectively. The extent of $Li^+$ ion exchange into zeolite X (crystal 1) is higher than that of zeolite Y (crystal 2), ca. 73% and 56% in crystals 1 and 2, respectively.

To investigate the tendency of $Li^+$ exchange from polar organic solvents, $Li^+$-ion exchange into zeolite Y (Si/Al = 1.56) was attempted by undried methanol (crystal 1) and formamide (crystal 2) solvent. Two single crystals of Na-Y were treated with 0.1 M LiNO3 in each of the two solvents at 323 K, followed by vacuum dehydration at 723 K. Their structures were determined by single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction techniques in the cubic space group $Fd{\bar{3}}m$, at 100(1) K. In both structures, $Li^+$ for $Na^+$ ions filled preferentially sites I' and II. The remaining $Na^+$ ions occupied sites I', II, and III' in both structures, in additional to above sites, and $Na^+$ ions occupied site I in crystal 2. While the 68 % exchange of $Li^+$ for $Na^+$ was achieved from undried methanol, only 40 % exchange was observed from undried formamide, indicating that the undried methanol was more effective than undried formamide as solvent for $Li^+$ exchange under the conditions employed.
