  • A systematic educational program evaluation system for continuous quality improvement in undergraduate medical education is essential. Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) are two distinct but complementary processes referred to in an evaluation system that emphasizes formative purpose. Monitoring involves regular data collection for tracking process and results, while evaluation requires periodic judgment for improvement. We have recently completed implementing an educational evaluation using the M&E concept in a medical school. The evaluation system consists of two loops, one at the lesson/course level and the other at the phase/graduation level. We conducted evaluation activities in four stages: planning, monitoring, evaluation, and improvement. In the planning phase, we clarified the purpose of evaluation, formulated a plan to engage stakeholders, determined evaluation criteria and indicators, and developed an evaluation plan. Next, during the monitoring phase, we developed evaluation instruments and methods and then collected data. In the evaluation phase, we analyzed results and evaluated the criteria of the two loops. Finally, we reviewed the evaluation results with stakeholders to make improvements. We have recognized several problems including excessive burden, lack of expertise, insufficient consideration of stakeholders' evaluation questions, and inefficient data collection. We need to share the value of evaluation and build a system gradually.

  • This paper describes the effects of Novel Engineering(NE) on improvement of creative problem-solving abilities. We performed two classes for control and experience group. They are all 5th grade students. Core concept of the NE lesson is ecosystem and interaction with 8 hours long. We designed a lesson able to integrate subjects like Korean, Science and Practical Arts. Then we performed pre-and-post t-test on creative problem-solving ability. The experimental results showed that NE lesson has a high effects on 4 sub-elements like self conviction and independence, diffusion thinking, critical thinking and motivational component. The research showed that NE class is a good teaching-learning method to cultivate various competencies for our children. NE is a convergence learning model integrating various problem-solving paradigms ever researched. Thus we expect that NE is a foundation for convergence curriculum model to lead our children to their future and get settled to all schools.

This study is intended to find causes of teachers' conceptions and to derive educational implications. We have analyzed questionnaires which were collected from 77 elementary school teachers. It was carried out about comparisons actual fossil with fossil model in each step of the inquiry activity, the lesson goal, the thought for changes of the inquiry activity, the improvement of the inquiry and conception related fossil. Teachers have a general understanding about the contents of the inquiry activity but some of them have partially incorrect understanding. And they emphasize the understanding of the concept on lesson goal. It is necessary to improve inquiry activity reflecting teachers' thinking about the merit and weaknesses. There was not statistically difference in understanding of fossil related concepts according to teachers' career, teaching or training experience. Through this research, there is a need to improve a textbook, a guide book, a teachers' training. So, teachers who have professionalism about science textbook be able to teach students.

  • Due to frequent international exchanges, there has been much emphasis on communication proficiency in foreign language education. However, when we look back upon teaching English in Korea over past years, we find that English teaching has been dominated mainly by Grammar-Translation Method, which makes teachers and students pay little attention to listening skill that is regarded as the basis of communication proficiency. Recently many English teachers have shown their interest in listening skill, so they come to use the textbook record tapes to improve listening skill. But listening training by textbook record tapes seems to make students feel bored. So the purpose of this study is to suggest an effective way of improving listening skill by means of Pop Songs that the students are indulged in. The processes of this study consist of three stages : 1) listening to songs, 2) explanation about structures and vocabularies in songs, 3) filling in blanks while listening. The subjects in this study are freshmen 88 students in girls' High School They are grouped into two : one is experimental group and the other control group. Among the subjects, the former have been taught by the lesson plan using pop songs, while the latter by the lesson plan using textbook record tapes. The experiment lasts about 9 months (from March to November, l994) The data for analyzing the study results have been collected from two kinds of tests : one is listening test and the other comprehensive test. The hypothesises of this study areas follows : 1) Depending on hearing materials (experimental material vs traditional material), there will be a difference in scores of listening skills between EG (experimental group) and CG (control group), 2) Depending on the interest on pop songs, there will be a difference in scores of hearing skills in CG, 3) Depending on hearing material. there will be a difference in scores of overall English skills between EG and CG, 4) Improvement in listening skill will give influence on the overall English scores. The findings of this study indicate that pop songs are effective to improve students' listening skill, that students' interest in the hearing material is important, and that listening skill is closely related to other skills, especially reading skill. It can be concluded that English teachers should make efforts to find the suitable listening materials which will help students to improve their listening proficiency effectively.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze STS contents in the elementary school science textbooks developed under the 7th national curriculum. Major findings from the analyses are as follows: (1) The Percentage of STS contents included is 26% by the number of pages, and 40% by the lesson hour, Higher proportions of the STS contents are found in the domains of ‘energy’ and ‘material’. By grade level, the coverage of 5th grade textbooks is relatively low. (2) Most STS topics are related to science rather than technology or society. (3) In many cases, STS contents are used in the whole processes of a lesson. (4) Most activities are 'group activity' or 'experiment.observation'. There are few activities of 'role playing', 'spot study' or 'interview'. These results indicate that recent STS education trends are reflected on the revised textbooks well. However, it is suggested that some improvement is needed, such as diversification of topic or activity.

  • The purpose of this study was to suggest qualitative improvement through various student-centered curriculum's teaching experiences focusing on physical education. For this, class diaries, memos, lesson plans, student reviews, and videos for the past four years (2017-2020) were collected and analyzed from four high schools in kyonggi-do, and six students were interviewed. The common features between each student-centered curriculum were to have many students with the purpose of entrance examination and with concern about time conflicts between class and their dinner. In contrast, the differences between each student-centered curriculum were the required level of writing lesson plan, the level of interest and role of a class supervisor, and educational expected effect of students under a given condition. In summary, pre-education experience should be required and class activity support and various evaluation methods should be also needed.

  • The aim of this study was to examine the effects of remedial instruction on self-efficacy improvement in elementary school students with low self-efficacy, which may have been formed through negative experience with learning such as poor performance and poor grades. Nine 6th grade students with low self-efficacy were selected for the present study. A remedial class was set up and instruction was given once a week for 14 weeks. The purpose of the remedial class was to give the students a positive experience with English learning and have students reflect on their achievement. The contents and class activities were adjusted to the subjects' English abilities and also closely related to those of the regular classes so that students could have more confidence during regular English classes. The data were collected from a test of self-efficacy in English learning, achievement tests given before and after the experiment, achievement tests after each lesson, a general self-efficacy test, a basic questionnaire, interviews, journals, and students' self-evaluation. The results showed that the remedial instruction was very successful in providing students with a sense of achievement and improving students' self-efficacy in English learning. However, this study failed to find significant improvement in general self-efficacy tests and achievement tests given before and after the experiments. A longer period of remedial instruction may have been necessary to obtain more concrete results from the variety of data collected.
