  • A turnout which permits trains to pass from one track to another has a disconnecting rail component, namely a crossing, so that noise and vibration arc occurred abruptly when train is passing through it. In Korea, it is planned to adopt the high speed tilting train, which operates at the speed of 180 km/h, at the conventional line. However, for application of the tilting train, it is prerequisite to establish the stable turnout system allowing the tilting train to pass through it without reducing speed. This study was performed to evaluate noise and vibration emitted from the prototype turnout which is developed for speed-up of the conventional line. For the purpose, noise and vibration were measured at near the conventional turnout and the improved one, which is constructed at Waegwan station and Kumi station of Gyeongbu line, respectively.

  • The general contractor business in South Korea settled in the railway construction during the Daehan Empire, but depending on the construction intention and circumstances of the railroad, relationship among employer-contractor-subcontractor and their roles under the system of the construction process had changed. At the time of laying the Gyeongin and Gyeongbu-rail, the Empire, which had no capital and technology, passed all the power and responsibility of the rail laying to the contractor, who was involved in most of the process. After this, the empire tried to lay Gyeongui-railroad without the help of other countries. Japan prepared for the Russo-Japanese War and decided to construct the railway rapidly, and completed the railway in parallel with direct management work and contract work. From that time on, the general contractor would only do the work. During the construction of railroad in Daehan empire, the general contract business system was established. The ambiguous process was sorted out and divided. At this time, subjects in charge of design and construction has been divided. The internal organization of the project owner and the contractor were organaized and specialized.

  • Personal noise exposure was assessed in railroad operators working in 40 operation units including the Gyeongbu line, Honam line, and Janghang line between 2004 and 2006. 8-hour TWA were assessed based on the MOL (Ministry of Labor) guideline on noise evaluation, and 17% of these measurements exceeded 85 dBA while 70% were over 80 dBA. When the ACGIH TLV is adopted, 40% of measurements were over TLV (85 dBA). The noise exposure risk of railroad operators was higher for diesel locomotive operation and longer operational distances; in addition, the risk was higher for passenger car operation compared to freight car driving. Given that in Korea, over the past 30 years diesel locomotives have provided most of the railway's motive power and that hearing protective equipment is not likely to be used by workers during operation, railroad operators are at a high risk of noise-induced hearing loss. The result of audiometric test among 568 railroad operators showed that 32.6% of those tested had a hearing threshold shift of more than 40 dB. In conclusion, this study calls for more fundamental measures including noise control countermeasures within the operation areas, development of equipment that generates less noise and adopting limitation on the operation distance for a work shift.

  • Urban conditions such as underground facilities and ambient noises due to cultural activity restrict the application of conventional geophysical techniques in general. We used the linear array microtremor technique which uses these noises as strong energy source. The result parameter of the survey is shear wave velocity profile which had been applied as an fundamental information for the determination of the rock support type in tunnel design. This study was the first case in Korea which utilized a surface geophysical technique yielding successful result in urban area especially under the existing rail ways. The quantitative relation between the shear wave velocity from this method and the rock mass rating(RMR) determined from the inspection of the cores recovered from the same boreholes showed high statistical relationship. These correlations were then used to relate the shear-wave velocity to RMR along the entire profile.

  • When Korean High Speed Train (KTX) runs over a high-speed railway bridge, the high-speed railway bridge gives quite large acceleration response. Local vibration at the large cross section, the impact from equally spaced sleepers, the vibration due to elastomeric bearings, and the vibration from the train itself are the causes of this acceleration response. Maximum peaks of the accelerations measured at the bridges are sometimes going over the limit value. Although it is smaller than 0.35G, the limit from the Korean Bridge Design Manual(BRDM), this acceleration response should be reduced for the safety of running trains with high speed. In this paper, to reduce the acceleration response by controlling excessive local vibration at the large cross section, vibration reduction method is studied. The result shows that the effect of elastomeric bearings on the vibration of the bridge is very large and that the vibration reduction device is effective against wing mode local vibration PSC box girder bridge for the high-speed railway, which usually has very large cross section, although it has little effect on global vibration modes such as flexural and twisting modes. The test of the vibration reduction device on the bridge in service has been performed in this study.

  • To consider the effects of the increasing speed of next-generation high-speed trains, the existing traffic safety code for railway bridges needs to be improved. This study suggests a numerical method of evaluating the new effects of this increasing speed on railway bridges. A prestressed concrete (PSC) box bridge with a 40 m span length on the Gyeongbu track sector is selected as a representative example of high-speed railway bridges in Korea. Numerical models considering the inertial mass forces of a 38-degree-of-freedom train and the interaction forces with the bridge as well as track irregularities are presented in detail. The vertical deflections and accelerations of the deck are calculated and compared to find the new effects on the bridge arising with increasing speed under simply and continuously supported boundary conditions. The ratios between the static and dynamic responses are calculated as the dynamic amplification factors (DAFs) under different running speeds to evaluate the traffic safety. The maximum deflection and acceleration caused by the running speed are indicated, and regression equations for predicting these quantities based on the speed are also proposed.

  • As a result of that the domestic railway technology has been progressed as times go by, the 1st and the 2nd steps for Gyeongbu HSR at the speed of more than 300km/h, were completed and Honam HSR - its operational speed is 350km/h - is under construction. Additionally, As a part of the expressization project for general lines, the Seoul-Chuncheon route at the speed of more than 180[km/h] is under construction and the Jeolla route is under design. At present, 11 countries (e.g. France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, England, Japan, China and Taiwan) including Korea have high speed railways operated at the speed of more than 300[km/h]. As shown in the above, the domestic railway has high speed trains as good as those of countries outside Korea, but the schedule speed, which is calculated by dividing distance to destination by time, is lower than that of overseas trains. For overseas railway, the ratio of schedule speed to the highest speed is above 65%, while that of domestic railways is over 50%. It shows a significant difference between them. It is expected that the schedule speed improvement will increase the number of train operation and line capacities than now, so it shall achieve smooth transportation flow and improve the passengers' satisfaction. In this paper we describe the necessity for the improvement of schedule speed, by analyzing foreign cases related to the improvement of schedule speed in order to satisfy the increasing traffic demand.

  • Impedance of rails is increased by the magnetic coupling between rails and reinforcing bars in the concrete slab track. Currently, the current of track circuit has been compensated by installing the compensation capacitors on track circuit because of increasing the impedance of rails. In case of a rapid transit railway, the compensation capacitors are installed every 20[m] to compensate the current of track circuit in the concrete slab track. Because the interval of one block for a rapid transit railway is as long as 1500[m], the compensation capacitors are installed about the number of 70$\sim$75 on track circuit. However, in case the compensation capacitors are broken over the number of three, it is a problem that the amplitude of current is under standard amplitude of current which is 0.8[A]. In this paper, it was suggested installing a compensation capacitor by using resonance phenomenon on the concrete slab track. We represent the electrical model of track circuit and the four terminal network, calculate the parameters demanded for the electrical model in the concrete slab track. Also, we computed the position and capacitance of the compensation capacitor about 2040[Hz], 2400[Hz], 2760[Hz], 3120[Hz] which currently is the track circuit frequency in the Gyeongbu rapid transit railway and demonstrated the validity of it, using the Matlab and PSpice program.

  • These days Automated Vehicle(AV) has been receiving attention as a fundamental solution to resolve the various transportation problems and various researches related to the benefits of AV have been done. However, previous researches mainly analyzed the effects in the virtual network. The purpose of this research is to predict and to find out the benefits by introducing the Automated Vehicle to present road traffic system. Thus, the study analyzes the traffic-flow changes of Gyeongbu freeway Seoul-Singal basic section which is planned for setting the test-bed. The results show that Automated Vehicle can have negative effects on the traffic-flow in low volume of LOS A and B. However, the average speed increases and the traffic density decreases in more than LOS C, the traffic volume increase. Therefore, the introduction of Automated Vehicle achieves positive effect on various transportation problems such as the traffic congestion.
