The experiment was carried out to analyze the inhibition effect of plant pathogenic fungi and growth promotion activity induced by the bacterial strains isolated from peatmoss. Among the isolated bacterial strains, B10-2, B10-4, B10-5 and B10-6 which showed more than 30% inhibition rate against Botrytis cinerea and Rhizoctonia solani in vitro, were further analyzed in the greenhouse for the growth promotion activity on lettuce (Lactuca sativa), pak-choi (Brassica compestris L. ssp. chinensis) and Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L. ssp. pekinensis). The results showed the treatment of B10-4 on lettuce showed the highest growth promotion activity with the leaf area ($169.17cm^2$), fresh weight (leaf: 40.29 g, root: 8.80 g)and dry weight (leaf: 11.24 g, root: 4.17 g), which was about two folds as compared to control. On pak-choi, the growth promotion rate was the highest with the leaf area of $112.87cm^2$, leaf fresh weight of 60.70 g, root fresh weight of 3.37 g, leaf dry weight of 14.34 g, and root dry weight of 1.90 g. As a result of treatment of B10-13 on chinese cabbage, the growth promotion rate was the highest with the leaf area ($293.56cm^2$), fresh weight (leaf: 113.67 g, root: 2.40 g) and dry weight (leaf: 6.03 g, root: 0.53 g). The production of Indole Acetic Acid (IAA) and Indole-3-Butylic Acid (IBA) were also analyzed in these bacterial isolates. The IAA and IBA analyses were carried out in all bacterial isolates each day within the 5 days of incubation period. The highest production of IAA was observed with $112.57{\mu}g/mg$ protein in B10-4 after 3 days of incubation and IBA production was the highest in B10-2 with $58.71{\mu}g/mg$ protein after 2 days of incubation. Also, phosphate solubilizing activity was expressed significantly in B10-13 in comparison to that of other bacterial isolates. Bacterial identification showed that B10-2 was Bacillaceae bacterium and B10-5 was Bacillus cereus, B10-4 and B10-6 were Bacillus sp. and B-13 was Staphylococcus sp. by ITS sequence.

Objective : Broccoli is edible green plant that has a wide variety of health benefits including cancer prevention and cholesterol reduction. However, leaves of broccoli are not eaten and are mostly left as waste. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the broccoli leaf extract (BLE) on prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production related to nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated macrophages. Methods : BLE was prepared by extracting dried leaf with ethanol. Cell viability was determined by 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. PGE2 and inflammatory cytokines were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Expression level of each protein was monitored by Western blot analysis. Results : In LPS-activated Raw264.7 cells, PGE2 release into culture medium was dramatically enhanced compared to control cells. However, increased PGE2 was attenuated dose-dependently by treatment with BLE. Inhibition of PGE2 production by BLE was due to the suppression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression determined by Western blot analysis. BLE also inhibited the production of inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). Inhibition at PGE2 and cytokine was mediated from inhibition of nuclear translocation of NF-κB due to the repression of inhibitory kappa B alpha (IκBα) phosphorylation and degradation. Conclusion : This study showed that BLE exerted inhibitory activities against PGE2, which is critical for the initiation and resolution of inflammatory responses, and that inhibition of PGE2 was mediated by suppression of NF-κB signaling. These results suggest that the waste broccoli leaves could be used for controlling inflammation.

Leaf rust is the most widespread and destructive fungal disease, and outbreaks have always caused considerable losses in wheat yields. Thus, worldwide increases in wheat production depend on the development of leaf rust-resistant wheat varieties. In this study, we evaluated the resistance of forty Korean wheat cultivars to leaf rust at the seedling stage. Only two Korean wheats, Ol and Jonong, were resistant to leaf rust, whereas the remaining thirty-eight Korean wheats were susceptible to leaf rust. The Ol and Jonong varieties presented larger dry seed weights and higher antioxidant activity in response to leaf rust than the susceptible wheat varieties. No differences in ${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase activity or chlorophyll content between resistant and susceptible wheat varieties were observed. Overall, these results are important for the development of wheat varieties that are highly resistant to leaf rust and to understand the underlying mechanisms that confer leaf rust resistance.

Using the stratifying clip method, we examine the differences in vertical distribution of leaf area and its relationships with dry matter production were investigated in the primary swards of six varieties. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The varieties could be classified into 4 different types according to their of vertical distribution of leaf area within the canopy. Thus, M had a greater leaf area distribution in the base layers and became smaller towards the upper layers, Leto, First and Bundy had the leaf area distribution which was most abundant in the middle layers and became smaller towards the base and the upper layers, Tammisto had a greater leaf area distribution in the middle layers and intensively distributed to the upper layers, and Trader had the relatively uniform leaf area distribution over all layers. 2. Effective leaf area index(ELAI) correlated with leaf area index(LAI), dry weight of plant(DW), stem weight of plant(SW) and stem area index(SAI). 3. The variety with the heading tiller type had the effective leaf area intensively distributed to the upper layers of canopy, but the vegetative type showed a high ratio of effective leaf area index. 4. Varietal differenced was found between the effective leaf area and specific leaf weight(SLW) in each stratum above the layer indicating the highest leaf area density within the canopy. M and Trader had a highly negative significant correlation, but the other varieties was not significant correlation.
Burley leaf tobacco extracts has been heated at loot for 2 hours and changes in non-volatile fructosazines and volatile components were investigated. Major changes for the heat treatment with corn syrup of burley leaf tobacco extracts were as follows, increases in the contents of 2,5-deoxyfructosazine and 2,5-fructosazine that is produce for the heating reaction of sugar and ammonia, production of pyraEine compounds, such as 2,6-dimethyl pyrazine,2,4-dimethyl pyrazine, ethrnyl pyrazine, methylethyl pyraxine, trimethyl pyrazine, 2-ethenyl-5-methyl pyrazine, 2-acetyl parazine and 2-acetyl-3-methyl pyrazine, increases in the content of furfuryl alcohol derived from sugar degrad ation, production of 2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-3(2H)-furanone and 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one derived from thermal degradation of Amadori compounds.
Though a variety of non-conventional feedstuffs have been successfully evaluated in research stations in Asian countries, there had been little adoption of these technologies at the small farm level. The methodology and results of three separate on-farm trials evaluation the possible use of some non-conventional feedstuffs in broiler diets under small farm conditions in Sri Lanka are reported in this paper. In all trials, the commercial mash, that in normally used in the farms, served as the control. In trials 1 and 2, 5 and 10% cassava leaf meal, respectively, was substituted (w/w) for the commercial mash and fed to broilers for six weeks. In trial 3, several non-conventional feedstuffs (cassava leaf meal, rubber seed meal, ipil ipil leaf meal and died poultry manure) were substituted (w/w) for the commercial mash at levels of 15-20%. The results demonstrated that these non-conventional feed resources can be used in broiler diets under small farm conditions, with no adverse effects on performance. The salient features of on-farm animal research are highlighted.

Mulberry leaf roller, Diaphania pulverulentalis (Hampson), is a major pest of mulberry, Morus alba. The life table construction from present investigation reveals the age specific survival $(1_{x)}$ and the age specific fecundity $(m_{x})$ of the pest. The female contributed the highest egg production $(m_{x} = 12.75)4 in the life cycle on the $27^{th}$ day and the lowest $(m_{x} = 0.8)$ on the 37$^{th}$ day of the pivotal age. The female progeny production was observed to be intensive for the first six days after the preoviposition period, beyond which it declines steadily, The fecundity of D. pulverulentalis varies between 60-140. The first female mortality within the cohort occurred 4 days after the adult emergence and mortality increased thereafter, One generation is completed in 33.08 days. The female dominated sex ratio (1: 7.18 days) was recorded.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of activated carbon on leaf and stem production of Agastache rugosa as affected by different amounts of activated carbon. The results obtained are summarized as follows. Growth characteristics including plant height and leaf length were the highest when activated carbon added with $10\%$, suggesting that optimum amount of activated carbon was ranged from 10 to $20\%$. Growth and enlargement of the root were improved by $10\%$ AC. Activated carbon can be utilized as a soil conditioner in agricultural crop areas.
We compared the functional traits of leaf blades and culms of common reed (Phragmites australis) in four habitat types of distinguished environments such as temperature, precipitation, water characteristics, and indices related to biomass production (montane fen, MF; riparian marsh, RM; lagoon, LG; and salt marsh, SM). We also examined the relationships between the functional traits within and among populations. Four populations showed remarkable differences in the functional traits of leaf blades and culms. MF and RM had relatively tall (> 300 cm) and thick (> 8 mm) culms bearing long leaf blades (> 40 cm), whereas LG and SM had relatively shorter and thinner culms bearing shorter leaf blades than MF and RM. Some relationships between the functional traits of leaf blades and culms showed negative or not significant correlations within the population, whereas most of the relationships between the functional traits showed positive correlations particularly when all the data from four populations was included into the correlation analysis.
Leaf blotch of Welsh onion was observed at a farmer's field at Kangnung in July 1990. Further collection o the diseased materials was made in 1993 and 1994. The symptom initially appeared as discolored spot and later yellowish blotch with the long axis parallel to the leaf veins, which turned to sooty colored concentric lesion due to heavy production of conidiophores and conidia. Cladosporium allii-cepae (Ranojevic) M. B. Ellis was repeatedly isolated from the leaf lesions. Healthy Welsh onion inoculated with conidial suspension of the fungus produced the typical symptom 10 days after inoculation. Koch's postulates were fulfilled by reisolation of the fungus. This is the first report of a Cladosporium leaf blotch of Welsh onion in Korea.
