  • In this paper, in order to develop excellent Pb-free composition ceramics for ultrasonic sensor. The $SnO_2$-doped ($Na_{0.525}K_{0.443}Li_{0.037})(Nb_{0.883}Sb_{0.08}Ta_{0.037})O_3$)(abbreviated as NKL-NST) ceramics have been synthesized using the ordinary solid state reaction method. The effect of $SnO_2$-doping on their dielectric and piezoelectric properties was investigated. The ceramics doped with 0 wt% $SnO_2$ have the optimum values of piezoelectric constant($d_{33}$), piezoelectric figure of merit($d_{33}.g_{33}$), planar piezoelectric coupling coefficient($k_p$) and density : $d_{33}=195[pC/N]$, $d_{33}.g_{33}=5.62pm^2/N.kp=0.40$, $density=4.436[g/cm^3]$. suitable for duplex ultrasonic sensor application.

Electrical Properties of Lead Free (1-x)(Na0.5K0.5) NbO3-xLiNbO3 Piezoelectric Ceramics

  • This work focuses on the electrical conduction mechanism in a lead free ($Na_{0.5}K_{0.5}NbO_3$ ; NKN) ceramics system with $LiNbO_3$ content of approximately critical concentration $x{\geq}0.2$. Lead free $(1-x)(Na_{0.5}K_{0.5})NbO_3-x(LiNbO_3)$, $NKN-LN_x$ (x = 0.1, 0.2) ceramics were synthesized by solid-state reaction method. Crystal structures are confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The electric-mechanical bond coefficient $k_p$ decreases and the phase transition temperature $T_c$ increases with increasing x content, as determined by dielectric and piezoelectric measurements. The value of the real dielectric constants ${\varepsilon}^{\prime}$ and $k_BT{\varepsilon}^{\prime\prime}$ showed anomalies around $T_c$ ($462^{\circ}C$ in the NKN-LN0.1 and $500^{\circ}C$ in the NKN-LN0.2). For the ionic conduction of mobile ions, the activation energies are obtained as $E_I=1.76eV$ (NKN-LN0.1) and $E_I=1.55eV$ (NKN-LN0.2), above $T_c$, and $E_{II}=0.78$ (NKNL-N0.1) and $E_{II}=0.81$ (NKN-LN0.2) below $T_c$. It is believed that the conduction mechanisms of NKN-LNx ceramics are related to ionic hopping conduction, which may arise mainly due to the jumping of $Li^+$ ions.

  • Recently, many lead-free piezoelectric materials have been investigated for the replacement of existing Pb-based piezoelectric ceramics because of globally increasing environmental interest. There has been remarkable improvement in piezoelectric properties of some lead-free ceramics such as $(Bi,Na)TiO_3-(Bi,K)TiO_3-BaTiO_3$, $(Na,K)NbO_3-LiSbO_3$, and so on. However, no one still has comparable piezoelectric properties to lead-based materials. Therefore, new lead-free piezoelectric ceramics are required. $BiFeO_3$ has a rhombohedrally distorted perovskite structure at room temperature and a very high Curie temperature ($T_C$= 1,100 K). And a very large electric polarization of 50 ~ 60 ${\mu}C/cm^2$ has been reported both in epitaxial thin film and single crystal $BiFeO_3$. Therefore, a high piezoelectric effect is expected also in a $BiFeO_3$ ceramics. The recent research activities on $BiFeO_3$ or $BiFeO_3$-based solid solutions are reviewed in this article.

  • It was reported that a tetragonal phase can be stabilized with maintaining good piezoelectric properties when Na0.5K0.5NbO3 (KNN) is modified with 0.06 mol SrTiO3. However, such a high amount of SrTiO3 leads not only to poor sinterability but low Curie temperature (TC). To maintain high TC with good piezoelectric properties in KNN-based lead-free piezoelectric ceramics, this study investigates the effect of Li-doping on the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of 0.96Na0.5K0.5NbO3-0.04SrTiO3 (KNN-4ST) ceramics. As a result, the orthorhombic-tetragonal phase transition was observed at 2 mol% Li2CO3 modified KNN-4ST ceramics, whose TC, d33 and kp values are 328℃, 165pC/N and 0.33, respectively.

  • Lead-free $(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})(Nb_{0.96}Sb_{0.04)O_3$ + 1.2 mol% $K_4CuNb_8O_{23}$ + x mol% $Fe_2O_3$ ceramics were manufactured by a conventional solid state reaction method. And then, their piezoelectric and dielectric properties were investigated. At the 0.2 mol% $Fe_2O_3$ doped ceramics, the values of Kp=0.436 and Qm=696.36 were obtained, respectively, which were suitable for piezoelectric transformer application.

  • In this paper, the $0.95(Na_{0.5}K_{0.5})_{0.04}[(Nb_{0.8}Ta_{0.20})_{0.994}Co_{0.015}]O_3$(abbreviated as NKNT) + $0.05KNbO_3$ lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were synthesized by the conventional mixed oxide method route with normal sintering. And also, the effects of calcination temperature on the microstructure, dielectric properties, and piezoelectric properties were investigated. A polymorphic phase transition(PPT) between orthorhombic and tetragonal phases was observed in specimens calcined at $810^{\circ}C{\sim}850^{\circ}C$. The ceramics calcined at $830^{\circ}C$ showed excellent piezoelectric properties: $d_{33}$= 179 pC/N, $k_p$= 0.384, $Q_m$= 79.73). These results indicate that the ceramic is a promising candidate material for lead-free piezoelectric ceramics.

Dielectric and piezoelectric properties of lead-free $(Na_{0.5}K_{0.5})NbO_3$-Ba(Ti, Sn)$O_3$ ceramics

  • Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics 0.97$(Na_{0.5}K_{0.5})NbO_3$-0.03Ba$(Ti_{1-x}Sn_x)O_3$ [NKN-BTS-x] ceramics doped with 1 mol% $MnO_2$ have been fabricated by a sintering technique with muffling. The $MnO_2$-doped NKN-BTS-x ceramics with x$\leq$0.2 have pure orthorhombic perovskite structure at room temperature. The dense microstructure was developed with grain growth as an increase of amount of Sn. Moreover, the addition of Sn was found to have a significant influence on piezoelectric properties. In particular, the $MnO_2$-doped NKN-BTS-0.1 ceramics showed improved piezoelectric properties of piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$=145pC/N), relatively large electromechanical coupling factor ($k_p$=43%), dielectic constant (${\varepsilon}^T_{33}/{\varepsilon}_0$=676) dielectric loss (tan$\delta$=1.3%).

  • The 0.98 ($Na_{0.44}K_{0.52})Nb_{0.84}O_3-0.02Li_{0.04}$ ($Sb_{0.06}Ta_{0.1})O_3-0.5$ mol%CuO ceramics have been fabircated by ordinary sintering technique and the effect of various calcination method on the electrical propertis and microstructure have been studied. It was observed that the various calcination method influenced the elelctrical properties and structural properties of the 0.98NKN-0.02LST-0.5 mol%CuO ceramics with the optimum piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$) and electromechanical coupling factor ($k_p$) at room temperature of about $155{\rho}C/N$ and 0.349, respectively, from 0.98NKN-0.02LST-0.5 mol%CuO ceramics sample. The curie temperature ($T_c$) of this ceramic was found at $440^{\circ}C$. The 0.98NKN-0.02LST-0.5 mol%CuO ceramics are a promising lead-free piezoelectric ceramics.

  • In this study, $(1-x)(Na_{0.52}K_{0.443}Li_{0.037})(Nb_{0.883}Sb_{0.08}Ta_{0.037})O_3-x(Bi_{0.5}(Na_{0.7}K_{0.3})_{0.5}ZrO_3$ ceramics were fabricated by BNKZ substitution using a conventional solid-state method to develop excellent lead-free piezoelectric ceramics for piezoelectric actuators; their dielectric and piezoelectric properties were then investigated. All specimens were in the orthorhombic phase. $NKL-NSTO_3$ ceramics with x=0.01 showed excellent piezoelectric properties. The density (${\rho}$), piezoelectric charge constant ($d_{33}$), planar piezoelectric coupling coefficient ($k_p$), mechanical quality factor ($Q_m$), and dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}_r$) had optimized values of $4.56g/cm^3$, 208 pC/N, 0.43, 96, and 975, respectively.

  • Dense $0.95(Na_{0.5}K_{0.5})NbO_3-0.05LiTaO_3$ (NKN-LT) ceramics were developed by conventional sintering process. Sintering temperature was lowered by adding $Na_2O$ as a sintering aid. The electrical properties of NKN-LT ceramics were investigated as a function of $Na_2O$ concentration. When the sample sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 4h with the addition of 1 mol% $Na_2O$, electromechanical coupling factor ($k_p$) and piezoelectric coefficient ($d_{33}$) of NKN-LT ceramics were found to reach the highest values of 0.43 and 190 pC/N, respectively.
