The acoustical properties of multi-layered treatments of materials used in applications, such as automotive liners, generally cannot be directly measured by a one-time test in a standing wave duct. Therefore, we have to consider predicting them by the four-pole transfer matrix method. This method requires performing TCM or TLM for measuring the transfer matrix of each layer and calculating the total transfer matrix of the whole multi-layered material. The final predicted absorption ratios and transmission losses of the multi-layered treatments strongly depend on the measured transfer matrix of each layer. All these functions have been included in a new designed acoustical software.

Design optimization of layered plates bonding process is conducted by considering uncertainties in a manufacturing process, in order to reduce the crack failure arising due to the residual stress at the surface of the adherent which is caused by different thermal expansion coefficients. Robust optimization is peformed to minimize the mean as well as its variance of the residual stress, while constraining the distortion as well as the instantaneous maximum stress under the allowable reliability limits. In this optimization, the dimension reduction (DR) method is employed to quantify the reliability such as mean and variance of the layered plate bonding. It is expected that the DR method benefits the optimization from the perspectives of efficiency, accuracy, and simplicity. The obtained robust optimal solution is verified by the Monte Carlo simulation.

In this paper, the predictions and measurements of sound transmission loss(STL) are discussed for various types of acoustical materials and carpets. Random incidence sound transmission losses are measured by the sound intensity method. The in-house software HONUS2005 is used to predict TL and estimate the various physical properties such as the flow resistivity, the structure factor, the porosity, the Possion's ratio, and etc. After this estimation, various multi-layered materials with a steel plate are measured and predicted. In particular, Carpets are assumed to be membranes to predict acoustical performance. To confirm this assumption, double and triple-layered cases are also observed including two different kinds of carpets.

A boundary element method which utilizes the fundamental solution in the half plane is developed to analyze the multi-layered elastic media. The objective of this study is to derive numerically the fundamental solutions and to apply those to the exterior multi-layered domain problems. To obtain numerical fundamental solutions of multi-layered structural system, the same number of solutions as that of layers in Fourier transform domain are employed. The numerical integration technique is used in order to inverse the Fourier transform solution to real domain. To verify the proposed boundary element method, two examples are treated: (1) a circular hole near the surface of a half plane; and (2) a circular cavity within one layer of four layered half plane.
The response of a reinforced concrete structure to loading is both immediate and time-dependent. Under a sustained load, the deflections caused by creep and shrinkage may be several times their instantaneous values. The paper describes a general finite element procedure, based on the so-called layered model, to analyse reinforced concrete members, and shows in particular how the simple Step by Step Method may be incorporated into this procedure. By invoking the Modified Newton Raphson Method as a solution procedure, the accuracy of the finite element method is verified against independent test results, and then applied to a variety of problems in order to demonstrate its efficacy. The method forms a general method for analysing highly indeterminate concrete structures in the time domain.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of geometrical structure on the moisture transport properties of nonwoven batting materials. Two types of nonwovens were used such as single and double layered nonwovens. Steady and dynamic state water vapor transport properties were measured by absorption, evaporation and cobaltous chloride method respectively. The results of this study were as follows: 1) Geometrical structure affected water vapor evaporation, but there were no differences between single and double layered nonwovens in moisture absorption. Thickness and air permeability were influencing factor on water vapor transport rate. 2) Directionality of double layered nonwoven was observed both in steady and dynamic state moisture transport. There were differences between upper and lower layer of double layered nonwoven both in moisture absorption rate and color change by cobaltous chloride method. 3) In dynamic state of water vapor transport rate, single layered nonwoven reached more rapidly at the established relative humidity. It was confirmed that geometrical structure affected water vapor evaporation and hydrophilicity of fiber affected moisture absorption because there were much more water vapor transport rate by evaporation than absorption within the same period of time.

We present a new design method of one-dimensional multi-layered acoustic foams for transmission loss maximization by topology optimization. Multi-layered acoustic foam sequences consisting of acoustic air layers and poroelastic material layers are designed for target frequency values. For successful topology optimization design of multi-layered acoustic foams, the material interpolation concept of topology optimization is adopted. In doing so, an acoustic air layer is modeled as a limiting poroelastic material layer; acoustic air and poroelastic material are handled by a single set of governing equations based on Biot's theory. For efficient analysis of a specific multi-layered foam appearing during optimization, we do not solve the differential equations directly, but we use an efficient transfer matrix approach which can be derived from Biot's theory. Through some numerical case studies, the proposed design method for finding optimal multi-layer sequencing is validated.
The natural convection heat transfer and solidification in a stratified pool are studied. The flow and heat transfer characteristics in a heat generating pool are compared between single-layered and double-layered pools. And local Nusselt number distributions on outer walls are obtained to consider thermal loads on a vessel wall. The cooling and solidification of Al₂O₃/Fe melt in a hemispherical vessel are simulated to study the mechanism of heat transfer and temperature distribution. A unstructured mesh is chosen for this study because of the non-orthogonality originated from the boundaries of double-layered pool. Interface between the layers is modeled to be fixed. With this assumption mass flux across the interface is neglected, but shear force and heat flux are considered by boundary conditions. The colocated cell-centered finite volume method is used with the Rhie-Chow interpolation to compute cell face velocity. To prevent non-physical solutions near walls in case body force is large the wall pressure is extrapolated by the way to include body force. The numerical solutions calculated by current method show that averaged downward heat flux of the double-layered pool increases compared to single-layered pool and maximum temperature occurs right below the interface of the layers.

Metallic sandwich panels with pyramidal truss structures are high-stiffness and high-strength materials with low weight. In particular, bulk structures have enough space for additional multi-functionalities. In this work, in order to fabricate 3-D structures efficiently, Layered Manufacturing Method (LMM) which was composed of three steps, including crimping process, stacking process and bonding process using rapid infrared brazing, was proposed. The joining time was drastically reduced by employing infrared brazing of which heating rate and cooling rate were faster than those of conventional furnace brazing. By controlling the initial cooling rate slowly, the bonding strength was improved up to the level of strength by conventional vacuum brazing. The observation of infrared brazed specimens by optical microscope and SEM showed no defect on the joining sections. The experiments of 1-layered pyramidal structures and 2-layered pyramidal structures subject to 3-point bending were conducted to determine structural advantages of multilayered structures. From the results, the multi-layered structure has superior mechanical properties to the single-layered structure.
In this study, a method to remove residual powder on a multi-layered graphene and a new approach to transfer multi-layered graphene at once are studied. A graphene one-step transfer (GOST) method is conducted to minimize the residual powder comparison with a layer-by-layer transfer. Furthermore, a residual powder removing process is investigated to remove residual powder at the top of a multi-layered graphene. After residual powder is removed, the sheet resistance of graphene is decreased from 393 to 340 Ohm/sq in a four-layered graphene. In addition, transmittance slightly increases after residual powder is removed from the top of the multi-layered graphene. Optical and atomic-force microscopy images are used to analyze the graphene surface, and the Ra value is reduced from 5.2 to 3.7 nm following residual powder removal. Therefore, GOST and residual powder removal resolve the limited application of graphene electrodes due to residual powder.
