  • The behavior of high strength reinforced concrete columns subjected to uniaxal reversal loading and biaxial reversal circle path loading was investigated. Four full scale test specimens were tested. All specimens were adopted cantilever type, in order that the critical region is to locate only at the bottom of column. The parameters studied were transverse reinforcement ratio, uniaxial lateral loading and biaxial lateral loading. The damage features of columns by the biaxial loading are different from those of the uniaxial loading, However, the maximum strength and the draft angle at maximum strength were almost the same under uniaxial and biaxial loading. The transverse reinforcement under biaxial loading was very effective for increasing ductility of specimens.

  • Lateral pressure by tied reinforcement greatly enhances the maximum strength and ductility of columns under concentric loading. The lateral confinement effects will be improves ductility of high-strength concrete. The major purpose of this paper is to study on the improvements of maximum strength and strain at the point of tied high-strength concrete columns subject to axial loads. For this purpose, this study collected the other analytical results and the experimental data that has been performed by a lot of worldwide researchers and also analyzed it statistically. As the result, the theoretical equation for predict maximum strength and strain at the point was proposed. It is based on calculation of lateral confinement pressure generate from tensile that develop in transverse reinforcement.

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to examine the hysteretic behaviors of ultra-high strength concrete tied columns. The purpose of this study is to propose the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement for ultra-high strength concrete tied columns with 100 MPa compressive strength. Nineteen 1/3 scaled columns were fabricated to simulate an 1/2 story of actual structural members with the main variables of axial load ratio, configurations and volumetric ratios of transverse reinforcement. The results show that the deformability of columns are affected by the configurations and volumetric ratios of transverse reinforcement. Especially, it has been found that the behavior of columns are affected by axial load ratio rather than the amounts and the configurations of transverse reinforcement. To improve the ductility behavior of RC column using ultra high strength concrete in a seismic region, We suggested the amount of transverse reinforcement for all data that satisfy the required displacement ductility ratio over 4. It is means that the lateral confining reduction factor (${\lambda}^c$) considering the effective legs, configuration and spacing of transverse reinforcement and axial load ratio was reflected for the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement.

  • Previous studies have suggested the maximum experimental story shear force of beam-column joint frame does not reach its theoretical value due to beam-column joint failure when the column-to-beam moment capacity ratio was close to 1.0. It was also pointed out that under a certain amount of axial force, an axial collapse and a sudden decrease of lateral load-carrying capacity may occur at the joint. Although increasing joint transverse reinforcement could improve the lateral load-carrying capacity and axial load-carrying capacity of beam-column joint frame, the conditions considering varying axial force were still not well investigated. For this purpose, 7 full-scale specimens with no-axial force and 14 half-scale specimens with varying axial force are designed and subjected to static loading tests. Comparing the experimental results of the two types of specimens, it has indicated that introducing the varying axial force leads to a reduction of the required joint transverse reinforcement ratio which can avoid the beam-column joint failure. For specimens with varying axial force, to prevent beam-column joint failure and axial collapse, the lower limit of joint transverse reinforcement ratio is acquired when given a column-to-beam moment capacity ratio.

  • This paper presents experimental results for the confining characteristics of cylinder with center-hole and spiral reinforcements. The experiments have been conducted for the specimens with primary variables i.e., spiral reinforcement ratio and diameter of center-hole which affect the compressive strength and stress-strain relationship. Through this research, it was found that the compressive strength and ductility were increased with the ratio of spiral reinforcement because the lateral expansion of the concrete inside the spiral was restrained by the spiral, but dependent on the size of center-hole.

  • This paper presents the confinement effect of transverse reinforcement and cross-tie in hollow rectangular sectional columns. 20 analytical models with different amounts of transverse reinforcement and cross-tie in a plastic hinge region were analyzed by 3D nonlinear FEM. The analytical results show that the higher ductility can be achieved by the resonable combination of transverse re-bar and cross-tie providing sufficient lateral confinement.

  • This experimental investigation was conducted to examine the behavior and response of high-strength material (HSM) reinforced concrete (RC) columns under combined high-axial and cyclic-increasing lateral loads. All the columns use high-strength concrete ($f_c{^{\prime}}$=100MPa) and high-yield strength steel ($f_y$=685MPa and $f_y$=785MPa) for both longitudinal and transverse reinforcements. A total of four full-scale HSM columns with amount of transverse reinforcement equal to 100% more than that required by earthquake resistant design provisions of ACI-318 were tested. The key differences among those four columns are the spacing and configuration of transverse reinforcements. Two different constant axial loads, i.e. 60% and 30% of column axial load capacity, were combined with cyclically-increasing lateral loads to impose reversed curvatures in the columns. Test results show that columns under 30% of axial load capacity behaved much more ductile and had higher lateral deformational capacity compared to columns under the 60% of axial load capacity. The columns using closer transverse reinforcement spacing have slightly higher ductility than columns with larger spacing.

  • Of the various methods of splicing reinforcing bar in reinforced concrete structure, mortar-filled sleeve reinforcement splice offers diverse benefits, not only in terms of structural performance but also for the construction process. Consequently, after the mortar-filled sleeve splices have been developed in recent years, research and development on these splices has been actively carried out, in order to evaluate its macro structural performance, such as its strength and stiffness, with the aim of enabling this system to be applied to construction in the field as early as possible. However, to make a proper evaluation on the overall structural performance of the mortar-filled sleeve reinforcing bar splice, it is of critical importance to understand the lateral confining action of the sleeve, which is known to affect the bond strength between the embedded bar and mortar in the sleeve. Accordingly, in this study, an experiment of monotonic loading and cyclic loading was conducted with a full-sized mortar-filled sleeve splice attaching strain gauges on the sleeve surface with experimental variables such as development length of bar, etc. Based on the test results, the effect of the lateral confining action of the sleeve was analyzed and considered in terms of the bond strength between the bar and mortar in this splice.

  • This study presents an experimental investigation on six beam-column joint specimens under the lateral cyclic loading. The aim was to explore the effectiveness of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) in reducing the transverse shear stirrups in beam-column joints of the reinforced concrete (RC) frames with strong-columns and weak-beams. Two RC and four SFRC specimens with different types of reinforcement detailing and steel fibers of volume fraction in the range of 0.75-1.5% were tested under gradually increasing cyclic displacements. The main parameters investigated were lateral load-resisting capacity, hysteresis response, energy dissipation capacity, stiffness degradation, viscous damping variation, and mode of failure. Test results showed that the diagonally bent configuration of beam longitudinal bars in the beam-column joints resulted in the shear failure at the joint region against the flexural failure of beams having straight bar configurations. However, all SFRC specimens exhibited similar lateral strength, energy dissipation potential and mode of failure even in the absence of transverse steel in the beam-column joints. Finally, a methodology has been proposed to compute the shear strength of SFRC beam-column joints under the lateral loading condition.

  • From the development of residential flat plate system, continuously bended shear reinforcements were applied in the joint performance test. The testing parameters are shear reinforcement types, which are no reinforcement, studrail reinforcement, and rebar type reinforcement. To verify the lateral resisting capacity, cyclic load is applied in the constant vertical load condition. From the test results, the resisting capacity of developed shear reinforcement system has a good performance behavior in the story drift ratio.
