With the growth of interest in the UAVs, the study of the UAV collision avoidance is in progress. Lidar, Video camera, laser sensor, and ultrasonic sensor may be utilized for collision avoidance of UAV. In this paper, the characteristics of MB 1230 ultrasonic sensor is analyzed through the experiment. When concurrently using multitudinous ultrasonic sensors, ultrasonic sensors do not generate correct measurement values. To solve ultrasonic sensor interference, sequentially transmitting ultrasonics signal is suggested by using 'Enable' signal input of ultrasonic sensor, so by activating each ultrasonic sensor gradually. This proposed solution is also verified by experimentation.

Three-dimensional data has been used for different applications such as robotics, building reconstruction, and so on. 3D data can be generated from an optical camera or a laser scanner. Especially, a wearable multi-sensor system including the above-mentioned sensors is an optimized structure that can overcome the drawbacks of each sensor. After finding the geometric relationships between sensors, georeferencing of the datasets acquired from the moving system, should be carried out. Especially, in an indoor environment, error propagation always causes problem in the georeferencing process. To improve the accuracy of this process, other sources of data were used to combine with LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data, and various registration methods were also tested to find the most suitable way. More specifically, this paper proposed a new process of NDT (Normal Distribution Transform) to register the LiDAR point cloud, with additional information from other sensors. For real experiment, a wearable mapping system was used to acquire datasets in an indoor environment. The results showed that applying the new process of NDT and combining LiDAR data with IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) information achieved the best result with the RMSE 0.063 m.

For the precision measurement of industrial products, the location of holes inside the products, if they exist, are often selected as feature points. The measurement of hole location would be performed by vision and laser-vision sensor. However, the usage of those sensors is limited in case of big change of light intensity and reflective shiny surface of the products. In order to overcome the difficulties, we have developed a hole displacement measuring device using contact-type displacement sensors (LVDTs). The developed measurement device attached to a robot measures small displacement of a hole by allowing its X-Y movement due to the contact forces between the hole and its own circular cone. The developed device consists of three plates which are connected in series for its own function. The first plate is used for the attachment to an industrial robot with ball-bush joints and springs. The second and third plates allow X-Y direction as LM guides. The bottom of the third plate is designed that various circular cones can be easily attached according to the shape of the hole. The developed system was implemented for its effectiveness that its measurement accuracy is less than 0.05mm.
In the nuclear power plant, there are several cylindrical vessels such as reactor vessel, pressuriser and so on. The vessels are usually constructed by welding large rolled plates, forged sections or nozzle pipes together. In order to assure the integrity of the vessel, these welds should be periodically inspected using sensors such as ultrasonic transducer or visual cameras. This inspection is usually conducted under water to minimize exposure to the radioactively contaminated vessel walls. The inspections have been performed by using a conventional inspection machine with a big structural sturdy column, however, it is so huge and heavy that maintenance and handling of the machine are extremely difficult. It requires much effort to transport the system to the site and also requires continuous use of the utility's polar crane to move the manipulator into the building and then onto the vessel. Setup beside the vessel requires a large volume of work preparation area and several shifts to complete. In order to resolve these problems, we have developed an underwater mobile robot guided by the laser pointer, and performed a series of experiments both in the mockup and in the real reactor vessel. This paper introduces our robotic inspection system and the laser guidance of the mobile robot as well as the results of the functional test.
In the context of auto-landing containers from a container ship to a truck or automatic guided vehicle and vice versa, this research investigates three schemes, one in Part I and two in Part II, for measuring the absolute position of a container. Coordinate transformations between the reference-coordinate, sensor-coordinate, and body-coordinate systems are briefly discussed. The scheme explored in Part I aims the use of three laser-slit sensors, which are relatively inexpensive. In this case, nine nonlinear equations are formulated for six unknown variables (three for orientation and three for position), so a closed-form solution is not available. Instead, an approximate solution through linearization was derived. An advantage of the method in Part I is its ability to measure an absolute position in 3D space, while a disadvantage is the computation time required to obtain pseudo-inverses and the approximate nature of the obtained solution. Numerical examples are provided.

This paper proposes a method of tracking an object for a person-following mobile robot by combining a monocular camera and a laser scanner, where each sensor can supplement the weaknesses of the other sensor. For human-robot interaction, a mobile robot needs to maintain a distance between a moving person and itself. Maintaining distance consists of two parts: object tracking and person-following. Object tracking consists of particle filtering and online learning using shape features which are extracted from an image. A monocular camera easily fails to track a person due to a narrow field-of-view and influence of illumination changes, and has therefore been used together with a laser scanner. After constructing the geometric relation between the differently oriented sensors, the proposed method demonstrates its robustness in tracking and following a person with a success rate of 94.7% in indoor environments with varying lighting conditions and even when a moving object is located between the robot and the person.

We have investigated the sensing properties of ethanol gas sensor with pure ZnO and Ga-doped ZnO nanowires on Au coated (0001) sapphire substrates grown by hot walled pulsed laser deposition. Randomly aligned ZnO nanowires arrays were grown on a Au-electrode patterned under ambient conditions. ZnO nanowires have various sizes and shapes with a different substrate position inside a furnace. The average of length and diameter of the ZnO nanowires were $8\;{\mu}m$ and 100 nm respectively, and confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy. Sensitivity chanege characterization of the gas sensor was found that measured sensitivities of the ethanol gas sensors were 83.3% and 68.3% at $300^{\circ}C$ respectively.

The robot systems are widely used in the many industrial field as well as welding manufacturing. The essential tasks to operate the welding robot are the acquisition of the position and/or shape of the parent metal. For the seam tracking or the robot tracking, many kinds of contact and non-contact sensors are used. Recently, the vision is most popular. In this paper, the development of the system which measures the shape of the welding part is described. This system uses the line-type structured laser diode and the vision sensor. It includes the correction of radial distortion which is often found in the image taken by the camera with short focal length. The Direct Linear Transformation (DLT) method is used for the camera calibration. The three dimensional shape of the parent metal is obtained after simple linear transformation. Some demos are shown to describe the performance of the developed system.

Unmanned ground vehicle for facility protection mostly uses model of territory for autonomous navigation. However, modeling of territory using several sensors is highly time consuming and sometimes inefficient for road application. Therefore, an estimation of drivable path based on features of road is required for high speed autonomous navigation on road. In this paper, an estimation method of drivable path using camera and 2D laser rangefinder is proposed. First, a vanishing point is estimated based on image data from CCD camera. Second, a road width is estimated based on range data from 2D laser rangefinder. Finally, the drivable path is estimated by fusing the vanishing point and the road width. The proposed method is tested on both well-structured road and unpaved road like cross-country situation.

From the Beckmann's reflection model of wave incident, reflected light from a surface is known to have not only specular but also diffuse components. The specular component dominant a surface for a mirror-like surface is distributed on the almost the same area as the spot on the surface, but the diffuse component region dominant f3r a rough surface spreads scattered on the larger areas than the spot. Therefore, statistic parameters from the scattered light distribution are more meaningful in the diffuse region, while the magnitude of rather meaning in the specular region. In usual, there need two sensors to acquire two kinds of information: Photo-detector for light intensity magnitude and image sensor for light intensity distribution. But dual sensor scheme requires a beam splitter usually to feed light to each sensor, and moreover there is not a combination rule to relieve the different sensor characteristics. In this study a new method is proposed for acquisition of the dual information using only an image sensor. Specular region is established on an image area being distinguished from a diffuse component, and laser power is adjusted so that no pixel of the image sensor in the specular region is saturated. Simulation based on the light reflection theory and the experimental results are quite well matched, and thus the proposed method was proved to be very useful for mirror-like surface measurement.
